It was a beautiful day in Republic City. The sun shined warmly overhead and the blue sky was dotted with mosaic of white fluffy clouds. In the downtown district, all manner of citizens were going about their lives. Delicious aromas carried through the air punctuated by the music of colorful street performers. As the masses filled the sidewalks and the buggies rattled along the streets, a man clad in red and yellow robes softly threaded his way through all the commotion of daily life. His slow, thoughtful gait a stark contrast to the busy walkway along the street. This was were he truly enjoyed being. Amongst the incredibly diverse people of the city, enjoying every individual moment like the unique flower that it was. He took in all sights, smells, and sounds of the busy scene and let out a small, contented sigh. |

The city never stopped moving. Constantly, back and forth, people coming and going in all directions. Ju Long did his best to blend into the crowd. He wore a light jacket and comfortable pants, and did his best to match his posture and manner of walking to those around him, if a little more slowly. He was searching, and it'd not do him well to walk in the hustled manner of the busy people of Republic City. Ju Long could hear street performers playing, sweet melodies, the sounds of clapping. He'd very much like to join in with them, and his right leg almost instinctively stepped behind his left to spin. He fought the urge. At current there were more pressing matters on his mind, and if he began dancing with performers he'd easily get distracted from his task, or draw attention to himself. So much wonder here. So many people, of so many cultures. It must be a fine place to call home. His stomach growled. On a regular day he'd take his spear and go fishing. He'd like to reach back for it, but it was not with him as it usually was; for obvious reasons a spear would make him stand out quite a bit more. I guess I'd better get something to eat, and there are so many pleasant aromas. A glad opportunity to eat something other than fish or heavily salted food. He smiled. At the stand he bought some chicken on a stick, along with some type of fruit he did not recognize. He began with the fruit first as he walked. It was sweet; almost sickeningly so, but he continued to eat it anyway. Coming from the other direction were more people as was his usual experience in the city, he stepped to the left despite there being a puddle there and continued walking. The puddle was deeper than he thought, and his feet came down through it, drenching his shoe and his pant leg as well as splashing mud and water up at another passing pedestrian: a man dressed in red and yellow robes. Quickly Ju Long pulled his own foot out of the puddle. "My apologies, sir. Please, allow me to buy you a chicken on a stick." Edited by Kenwyn, Jan 24 2015, 06:45 PM.

There was a flash of movement and a splash of muddy water. Li suddenly found himself with mud along the front of his robes and was facing an apologetic man with a wet leg. While some would have been frustrated or even outright angry over the unexpected splash, Li couldn't help but find himself amused and marveled at how this chance encounter could have only happened if every previous moment of their lives had played out exactly as they did. Even a slight deviance in the events may have resulted in an entirely different day for both of them. He smiled and waved his hand in dismissal. "There is no need to apologize at all. Life is full of the unexpected, and that fact is truly a marvel," he replied softly "And please do not waste your money. I'm afraid I do not eat meat." |

The man before him had a most positive and inviting outlook on life, though he did turn down Ju Long's offer for some chicken. "Ah but of course. Your robes give you the look of an acolyte." Air Benders and those who followed their philosophies were vegetarians. How utterly dreadful. "I should have expected such an answer." But Ju Long was not without his courtesies. "Perhaps a vegetable or a piece of fruit? I've muddied your robes after all." Ju Long put a hand in his coat. "I do like to pay my debts." He thought of his lifetime of being behind his brother. His brother that was a combustion bender. His brother that was born big and strong. His brother that left, and was viewed more highly than the loyal son. The hand in his pocket balled into a tight fist. And a debt is owed.

Li smiles and nods "Yes, I have lived at the Air Temple here in Republic City all of my life." Even though he had no issue with the mud on his robes, quite the opposite in fact as the chaos of life was truly fascinating to him, Li decided that he would take the stranger's offer, "Truthfully, I feel no debt is owed to me. However, I can see that this is important to you, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit a peckish. So I humbly accept your offer. I'm sure there is a fruit vender somewhere nearby." Li motioned for the man to lead the way, "After you." |

The man had accepted Ju-Long's offer. He led the small man back to the vendor which he had gotten his own food. He handed the vendor some money and looked to his short-term companion. "Choose whatever you like. That should cover it." "You say you've lived your whole life at the temple." Ju-Long began, "Do you often get visitors who come in to calm themselves? You see, I once had a friend when I was younger. A tall boy, who was always deathly nervous." Or had that stopped without the pressure of your duty? "He's lost his brother back home, but I fear his family has been unable to find and contact him. His mother is quite distressed over it." |

Li looked through the vendor's stock and picked himself out a nice piece of melon to snack on and graciously thanked the vendor. He quietly listened to the man, taking a small bite from his fruit and nodding, taking a moment to fully chew and swallow before replying. "Yes, we do on occasion get visitors to the temple. Sometimes they are individuals interested in learning more about the air nomad lifestyle, even casting off their old life and being reborn as a monk here. And others do visit during times of great stress or spiritual need, seeking advice or simply the quiet calm that they feel can only be discovered at the temple," he paused for half a moment before continuing. "Are you here on behest of the family to try and locate your friend?" |

"Yes, of course. It was almost as if I was one of their own growing up." Almost. Ju-Long thought, not exactly untrue. "It's what has brought me to this big strange city. Truly a humbling place." And charming in its own way. Ju-Long had never seen such a vast array of culture. It brought its own beauty. Especially the art and array of performers. |

Li smiled and nodded, "I know exactly what you mean. Even though I live at the temple, I spend more of my time here amongst the crowds than home. Some of the other monks prefer a life of more quiet solitude, but I have always felt that the best way to live is to enjoy the moment. And with so many people going in so many directions, there is never an identical moment to be experienced here. In it's own way, the unpredictable chaos of it all has its own serene quality." He finished enjoying his piece of melon while taking in the noise and motion around them. Each person moving about in time with an unseen metronome. Perhaps this meeting was more than just the culmination of all the random events of each of their lives. "Would you like some assistance in locating this friend of yours?" Li offered as he looked back up to Ju-Long. |

"A fine place to call home." Ju-Long replied. He would take up Li's offer as well. "That would be most decent of you. It has been quite a long time-" It probably couldn't hurt. "since I've seen Jing Li. We were boys yet when last I saw him. I imagine he's a very tall man now. He was always on his way to being one." Tall and strong and gifted. And weak and cowardly and irresponsible. "I am Ju Long. I am pleased to make your acquaintance." Part of him preferred not to use his own name, and he wondered whether or not Jing Li would use his own. If he was there had he told the monks? In any case, he and Jing Li had not parted as enemies... still it was a gamble. Edited by Kenwyn, Feb 21 2015, 11:50 AM.
