The only other section, of course, is Dark Creatures. Over the years we have studied boggarts, water demons, redcaps and hinkypunks, dementors and the more human-like vampires and werewolves. Today I'd like to cover just one more. Basilisks are giant snakes, hatched when a chicken egg is placed under a toad - as discovered by Herpo the Foul. In being snakes, they are susceptible to the will of a parselmouth but it is a dangerous notion to think one would have control. These beings sense and thrive on fear! They can live for almost a millennium and are, as you can imagine, not the easiest of things to kill. Male and female basilisks do differ distinctively, in that the former have scarlet plumes on their crown; though if you are close enough to see this I imagine it to be the least of your worries. Like many species though, the male is the more aggressive. Their most distinctive feature is their yellow eyes, which have the power to kill instantly should you meet their gaze directly; if indirect, such as a reflection, you will be petrified. Naturally, this gives them a ministry classification of XXXXX - BUT Basilisks do serve a purpose in battling the dark arts. Their venom is one of the few known substances that can destroy a horcrux. Homework - Write a sentence or two of description about each dark creature listed in the opening paragraph. I want brief but detailed answers - brevity is the key ladies and gentlemen! - Weigh up what I've told you of basilisks and tell me whether it is worth breeding them for their horcrux destroying ability. You may need to research a little about horcruxes. |
