The Muggle concept of a broomstick is grossly inaccurate. Men can fly brooms, brooms are more often flown in daytime rather than at night and the flier can be in any costume. Animals are also not usually carried on brooms. The fact that Muggles know that flying on brooms exists, however, shows how careless the early wizards were about conducting their magical affairs near a Muggle community.

A flying broomstick is not simply a "normal" broomstick pressed into service as a mode of transportation. A broom flies because of a unique combination of charms. Two charms in particular are used: the hover charm and the thrust charm. The hover charm gives the broom its height and the thrust charm gives its forward motion. But this combination of charms is not unique to brooms; it is also what kept magic carpets up!

Homework

1. Describe the Muggle concept of flying a broomstick.
2. Why were the early wizards careless?
3. Name the two main charms used in broom flight.
4. Explain how these two charms work together.
