A broom is a very difficult thing to fly as you will find out for yourself soon enough! You have to control left, right, up, down and speed as well as keeping your balance on a tiny bit of wood! A broom, due to its nature, will not fly backwards.

To fly a broom, you put your feet on the foot rests near the bristles and your bottom on the handle. You may find that you are sitting on air, that is just due to the cushioning charm on the broom! Stretch forward and place your hands a comfortable way down the handle. To go up, simply pull the broom upwards with your hands, to go down simply push the broom down. To turn you lean your body the way you want to go, rather like a Muggle motorbike and the broom will turn in the direction of leaning. Faster and slower are slightly harder to achieve, but can still be mastered with relative ease; to go faster lean forward and rest your torso on the handle, to go slower sit back and push down hard with your feet on the foot rests.

Homework

Get some practice in flying! Describe what happened when you first mounted the broom and when you flew it for the first time around the castle. Original and creative descriptions will score more!
