The broom has come a long way from when the first wizard thought to charm a stick of wood to fly. From being a handle with bristles on the end, flying which proved to be very uncomfortable, the broom has gone through numerous advancements to enhance the flying experience. On many models now, a cushioning charm is cast upon the broom, which raises the flier a few inches above the handle to provide comfort, and foot rests increase stability. Inertia and air protection charms are also cast on the higher end models which have super accelerations such as the Firebolt because the human body would not withstand the forces applied to the broom during an increase of 15 mph every second and so the broom would be useless. Brooms are susceptible to outside influence as well and extra spells can be cast upon them after purchase. A broom with additional charms looks no different to a broom without yet it could behave very differently, so if you suspect that your broom may have come from someone or somewhere dodgy it's best to get it checked first! Homework 1. What additional charm is cast on standard brooms to increase flying comfort? 2. Why do the more expensive broomstick models such as the Firebolt require more charms? 3. Why is it so hard to tell if your broom has been tampered with? 4. Name one external spell that could be used to change the behaviour of a broom. |
