Reforming the University

I had an idea.

What if, instead of teaching things from RL, the university trained people for job positions?

Kind of like education in real life. But it would actually be useful to the region because it could get people interested in things they didn't think they would be, like the Supreme Court. It would also help improve the quality of future officials, benefiting everyone.

It could teach courses on writing legislation, how to campaign, what to consider when voting, how to interpret the constitution, etc., and each person would have to graduate with a certain number of credits from each course to gain a degree in their respective position (ex. I would specialize in Speaker of the House, so I'd get a degree in Legislative Studies and in Administrative Studies, or something).

The Republic of Hedfer

Sounds great. I'm running for Senator and have no idea what to expect so something like that would be awesome

Yeah, DUAN should at least have some kind of training.

If the candidates have training degrees in their desired areas, everyone would know that the person is qualified for the position, which would be good in campaigns to say. Also, it would help weed out lazy people.

It would definitely lead to better legislation for the region

Great, great idea!

I have been looking for a way to use this (it is kind of my baby) and this is it!

Would an official have to have a degree?

No, (I don't think so) but it would prove you're qualified.

No, not required, but definitely helpful. It would say a lot about a graduate's character: that they care and are willing to make the extra effort.

It's going to need a great deal of organization (which I can help with) but it will definitely be beneficial to the candidate AND the region.

EDIT: Actually, maybe it should be made mandatory, in order to keep the university running and to produce government officials of high quality.

I have always loved this university. I would gladly accept a leadership role.

Edit: Birk, you know where I am on mandates. I wouldn't make it mandatory, but I think the voters would judge if someone didn't have one.

How about a compromise? Let's make it mandatory for people of appointed positions, but not for elected positions.

Birk, if they're appointed, wouldn't the appointer look at whether they have a degree or not, and take that into consideration?

All I'm saying is that it would be a big black mark not to have a degree.

Have it your way.

Mandatory vs. not mandatory shouldn't be a big issue anyway (unless use of the university doesn't increase or the quality of officials doesn't improve because it's not mandatory).

I know, I didn't mean it to sound like I was upset or something if it did :)

Glad to hear...

I thought you were annoyed, and I was just hoping this wouldn't snag any reforms at all.

Since the University is private, we don't need government approval or action. Would anyone mind me working on some ideas, with others' input, of course?

I can help.

We could start with general ideas (like areas of study such as skills needed for being part of a legislature, or how to be an executive or justice, etc.) and work our way to specific courses from there.

There's a similar system set up in TAR to train lawyers, and it's been great. Creating basic guides would work well for some aspects of government, but there's still a lot of room for studies that would make nice classes in the University.

Agreed, people should still be able to teach classes that they want to (for other things).
