I've always been a bit bothered/confused on how a character might address other characters such as the Prince, Primogen, etc. Other than by their title, of course. I would think their would be an IC consensus, or maybe a known preference for certain persons. Like Alarik, I think his preference is 'Your Highness'. Most people, however, address him as 'Your Majesty'. Which, honestly, I think sounds a bit too hoity-toity. Even for Ventrue, yes. Perhaps even mocking. My own chars, Agustin addresses most people above him as 'Sir' because he's American. I don't think most Americans, or anyone from another country staunchly 'Republican' (not the party, of course) or otherwise carrying a history involving such would be all that accustomed to phrases having to do with Nobility/Royalty/Aristocracy. My alt Rory is mainly why I bring this topic up, because him being older than most I would think he's come across the problem more than a few times and is rather accustomed to some facets of Camarilla socializing. Even as a loner-type Gangrel, yes. He's often forced to socialize. So, the question is... What would be the most likely form of address for Kindred (who should rightly know better) speaking to the Prince? Would it usually be Sir? Your Highness / Your Majesty / Your Grace / My Lord / My Prince / etc... As well as the other higher-ups too, of course. Might Primogen just be referred to as Sir/Ma'am or something else? Sheriffs and Scourges and so on and so forth... I'd like an answer from poAlarik, of course. I hope this can clear up any confusion that I'm sure I'm not the only one faced with. Mods, as well, please and thank you! all teh luvs Cid, and then there's this asshole... (p.s. Sorry if I rambled a bit...) Edited by Cid, Wednesday, 18. June 2014, 21:43.

Depends, I think. There might be preferred forms and other things, but I don't think there's a fixed guide of 'How to adress this and that correctly. Thus, theres a broad variety of what you can address people, depending on how much you want to suck up to them or show them the bare minimum of reverance. And then theres personal preferences as well. Example: James Henderson refers to Alarik as His Grace, as thats the highest honorific that someone who is not of royal blood can hold, and as Alarik is not nobility and there can be only one King or Queen in the realm, he thinks of 'Your Majesty' as unbecoming for a Prince. |

Sawyer addresses just about everyone, regardless of station, as sir or ma'am. Some younger girls end up as Miss _____ - he's used this with Pidge, Malia, and Margo regularly, and once frequently referred to Aguirre as Miss Maddox. If I remember correctly, he's only addressed Alarik as either Prince Blücher or sir. Likewise, any other officer position he's talked to, he's stuck with Title + Last Name and sir or ma'am in conversation. All of this, as always, is colored by the character himself. He's an easy-going 'murican who would find all those noble titles unpalatable. So far no one's called him out on it. |

Since becoming Prince of London, Alarik hasn't bothered to correct anyone on their forms of address, though he has been prissy about it if it was informal or blatantly disrespectful. He rose the issue with Leo once, I believe, but then just gave up! He personally prefers 'His Highness' (abbreviated HH) as it is the form that would be used for a non-Royal Prince in Contintental Europe, particularly those nobles from the former Holy Roman Empire. Since he is quite clearly German it would be the correct form of address for a German Prince. Prior to 1789 there were over 300 independent sovereign states and thousands of other bishoprics, lordships, and free cities that made up the Holy Roman Empire, and so there are still a lot of German 'nobles' around who, though they have no formal title, might still use the style. His Highness is thus the most culturally appropriate and therefore Masquerade Friendly way of addressing him. As Renard pointed out, 'Your Majesty' is a bit over the top since he does not hold the Princes of Britain in vassalage like Mithras did. And as there are very few British 'His Graces' outside the church, he does not prefer that either. Nothing to make a big fuss over though, so long as you don't address him as 'Al' or 'Hey you there' in a formal setting.

I think I might need to clarify my question... Is there any IC knowledge on this topic that Players might not know OOC? Like a canon consensus or convention. Rory would say what he knows (which I don't know OOC) is most appropriate, which I'm thinking right now would be 'Prince Blücher' or 'Your Highness'. Maybe 'Sir', which is why I ask. It's a very small issue, but I find it important to some chars. Also, I feel like if you ask around a specific domain you'd soon hear what a Prince's preferred form of address is. If they have one. (Edit: oops! got ninja'd by poAlarik...) Edited by Cid, Wednesday, 18. June 2014, 22:28.

Alarik hasn't, and wouldn't, send out a memo on how he would prefer to be addressed as 'His Highness'. Jhael would know though, and might be asked, if anyone cared to inquire. EDIT: HH is also used in his own letterhead! Edited by Alarik, Wednesday, 18. June 2014, 22:25.

I remember that Lazaruss has called him "your Majesty" in letters, and at the beginning the Prince corrected him, adding "I am not royal". Later on he didn´t correct people any more, I don´t think. |

Leo also used the "sir", since he is, as Agu said, used the american way of addressing People. But, as the Prince offered him the ring to kiss, he bent his knee, after all and honestly, i never read that before in any thread (which means nothing, I didn't read so many), but I just thought, he might have learnt this, because, he met several Princes in America. So far, I think, as a Gangrel, maybe you have more credits, if you don't behave completely perfect, because noone expects it from you anyway ;-) |
