Key Figures
THE MONSTER OF EALING
Last night, several people reported the sighting of a "screaming red monster" in a quiet neighbourhood of Ealing. After a power shortage in the area, a building caught fire. It was then when, what was described as a "man shaped, footless creature" emerged from the flames, leaping, running, and screaming. One woman has told our reporters that the man had "teeth like a wolf, and the face of the devil". Police officers are still trying to get to the bottom of this; neither the power shortage nor the fire have still been explained. A spokesperson from Scotland Yard has stated that the "so called monster" might be a wounded person, escaping the fire.

TRAGEDY IN TOOLEY STREET
The police has found the bodies of three TFL workers in the construction site at Tooley Street. One of their colleagues raised the alarms last week, when the three workers didn't attend their shifts. The bodies of the men have been found in a deep hole, uncovered by the refurbishment works that are taking place in the area. According to the Police, the bodies were horribly mutilated, which has led to the wildest speculations. The names of the three workers are being kept anonymous, following the wishes of their families.

HOROSCOPE
MARCH 8 - PISCES
You are used to making sacrifices, to prioritising the happiness of others before yours. Even though that is a noble attitude, there are times in life where the only healthy alternative is to embrace your own selfishness and allow yourself some enjoyment. Reserve one hour per day to do something you really like. Treat yourself! Your colour for this month is blue.
Echoes from the past ring back into London. Their intensity increases until they are deafening. What once was a faded memory of a glorious time, now becomes a shocking reality. The consequences of actions taken decades ago ripple into the present, altering the lives of everybody in the City. Unguided and blind, Kindred wander around, trying to make profit out of the reigning chaos.

The appearance of four mysterious figures turned the city upside down. Mistrust and jealousy became the official currency of London. Serpents and fiends rise to power, misdirecting the blaming eyes of the Camarilla towards imaginary enemies. Only those with clear vision and the ability to trust each other strive, while the rest run towards a shallow grave.

Name: Anwen Beatrice Camm
Age: 24 (Born April 12th 1990)
Species: Vampire
Clan: Toreador
Disciplines: Presence, Celerity, Auspex
Age of Embrace: 21 (Deceased June 3rd 2011)
Derangements: Claustrophobia

Occupation: Costumer, corset maker… unemployed.

Anwen

Appearance:
Anwen stands 5’9 with a slim waist, wide hips and (before her enhancement surgery,) a rather flat chest. Thanks to the miracle of modern plastic surgery and myfreeimplants.com she has a rack that can match her hips. She also has black hair which comes to her mid back when allowed free range and a pair of chocolate brown eyes.

History:
Anwen was born in Abercarn Wales to Joseph Camm, who sold shoes & Bronwen Collier who works as a sales clerk at a department store over in Newport. Anwen is descended from a long line of Welsh coal miners. A number of her relatives past away in the Abercarn Colliery disaster when the Prince of Wales Colliery exploded in September of 1878, killing nearly 300 miners.

Anwen was not a quiet child. She was not shy. She was a geek. She lived in a fantasy world. She had four older brothers who played D&D, read comic books and watched horrible B-flicks. So that’s what she wanted to do. Her mother despaired at getting Anwen to do anything remotely ladylike. Anwen liked playing the Wizard when she came to the table, though sometimes the Rogue was fun too. She disdained MMORPG’s because she said they weren't free enough when it came to what she wanted her character’s to be allowed to do.

Her Mom didn't completely fail at getting her to be a girl (or what she believed a girl was supposed to be) because there was one hobby that Anwen did love. She loved to sew. She started when her Mom told her that the only way she could have the kind of Halloween costumes she wanted was if she made them herself. So the girl begged for sewing lessons. What she didn't learn from her Mom she learned from her Grandma Beatrice. She learned to stitch and cut and sew to make her imagination come to life. Now, of course this backfired a bit on Bronwen because she hadn't anticipated her daughter making herself a Jawa costume. Or a Sand Raider outfit. She CERTAINLY never thought her daughter would be a Trekkie and make herself a Seven of Nine silver body suit out of skin tight silver faux-leather. But she did.

Anwen was an alright student. She had a decent head on her shoulders but no real desire to use it. She got bored in most classes and spent her time sketching outfits or costumes in her notepads. She was very active in the drama department, but always behind the scenes. She helped make costumes for most of the school plays by the time she reached the high school level. She also fell in love with Steampunk. She started learning how to use a dremel tool to grind copper and bronze to make gears and clockwork bits that would fit on her outfits. She got into corsets and decided that Kato was about the most perfect woman she could imagine.

Anwen came from a family of rather well endowed women on her mother's side, however she took after her fathers. As a young girl who suffered more than a little teasing from her maternal grandmother, aunts, cousins, she felt like she couldn't compete. Despite being a very attractive young lady she didn't FEEL beautiful. She was insecure because she felt like she was missing one of the major assets of womanhood. Between that insecurity and several of her role models having implant surgery she made some decisions on how she wanted to change who she was.

In truth there were a number of women that Anwen came to idolize as she grew into her late teens. Yaya Han, the cosplayer was one of them. Kato the steampunk models was another. Kato started her own website in 2011, a website where she modeled her own couture fashion and endorsed her steampunk line of corsets and clothing. For this reason Kato became a particular role model that Anwen sought to emulate. But unlike Kato Anwen did not want to do all the modeling herself, preferring to see OTHERS wear her clothing than to be photographed wearing it herself. In the end she made the same decision she made whenever people tried to get her to go to the audience side of a theater project. She preferred being behind the scenes more than she did in front. While she wasn't overly modest, she just didn't love the limelight. She'd rather make clothing to strap onto pretty girls than wear them herself. Still, one thing she realized in studying alternative models was that she wasn't QUITE happy with how she looked. She had always hated her small bust and felt that she should have had a more robust figure.

Ultimately this quest to change her figure is what lead her to finding out that things occur on the other side of the looking glass. Anwen turned to being a camgirl and started an account on freeimplants.com. She ended up making a poor choice, giving in to one of the many offers to trade sex for money. Gaining a thousand pounds for a single night of unsatisfying physical activity than in the end, convinced her that sex was something she had no desire to experience more often. While she was comfortable exposing her body and using it to gain a profit, she felt little in the way of physical passion. Still, the act gave her the last of the cash she needed to have her surgery and gain the bust she felt would be the final step in finding her dream. Now able to do some decent modeling, able to cheaply show her clothing off she felt her business would soon take off and she'd be able to live free.

Live free as a bird and be a real artist. Unfortunately, not a lot of people could afford to buy the outfits she made, because they cost quite a pretty penny to put together. So while she had a closet full of beautiful velvet and leather, all decked out in bronze fittings and fob watches, she was a little lean in the purse. It didn't help that her parents eventually DID find out about her camwork and threw her out. She had just enough in her savings to head to London. She figured if she could just find a good sponsor she’d be able to get her clothing business back on track.

Earning a set of new knockers, while a dominant part of her life at that time, was not her entire life. She worked as a costume maker part time for a local theater group. She also did some work for theater department of Coleg Gwent. But part time jobs, while good for paying the bills and feeding her nerd habit, weren't enough to give her a real life. Not the one she wanted. She wanted to make Steampunk couture. She played D&D with old high school friends, the ones who didn't go off to school. She watched movies. She even dated a bit, though not with any particular success. She smoked some weed, drank some beers and mostly focused on perfecting a steampunk look.

Anwen had one other habit that set her somewhat apart from the standard nerds. She loved trains. She developed a cosplaying persona to attend Cons and other gatherings, like steampunk events. The Conductor. Her persona was simple. Her persona was a Conductor who ran a train which traveled from Paris all the way to Beijing in China. While in reality no such train existed, in the world of Steampunk, such a thing was a simple diversion.

That is until her… handicap set in. Then she ended up faking her death in a boating accident.

Anwen is a frustrated young woman. She knows she makes beautiful dresses, corsets, coats. She knows that she makes outfits that people wants to buy. But it’s not cheap making a real steampunk outfit, and thus, not many people can afford her clothing. This is keeping her from making a decent living. She’s managed to scrape by making a few cheap trinkets out of her scraps. Leather bracelets, fascinators, goggles and the like; but it’s not enough for her to really afford an apartment. Especially in a place like London where rent is not cheap, especially for someone with Anwen’s handicap.

The Embrace:
Of course, she has another problem which frustrates her. She’s dead. She has been since June 3rd, 2011. About 3 months after she got her breast implants Mr. Disappointment returned. It turned out his name was Jefferson Crawford and he considered himself an artist. He focused on acting. He decided he wanted Anwen to make his costumes. So he took her, turned her and kept her chained in his basement for 2 years. When he wasn't working on his soliloquies he was teaching her the traditions, barely. Jefferson had reason to believe he was going to be the next great actor. He was turned by Jane Austin, at least that’s what he always said. He CLAIMED that Jane was turned by William Shakespeare. Anwen was never really sure if she believed him. He had an unfortunate habit of making up claims of himself that she was sure were lies. He also got killed by a Hunter in May of 2014.

The treatment at the hands of his Sire did give her a bit of a problem with enclosed spaces. She developed a phobia for small tight areas. It isn't enough to keep her from going inside buildings, but it does make her deeply uncomfortable in small spaces. Something the size of a closet can cause her fear, a fear which tends to reduce her to catatonia until she's taken out of it.

This left Anwen in a very unfortunate position of having no real contacts and no idea how to get in touch with another vampire. She did know that Jefferson Crawford lived in Rome before he came to Cardiff Wales, which is where he kept her. Now, on the good side Anwen met with Trowbridge the Prince of Wales, she even made him a pair of leather boots at one point. She was sired with permission. It’s simply questionable as to whether or not her sire was entirely sane or suffered megalomania. Trowbridge also gave her a letter and said that she should go to a place called The Muse in London within a week of arriving, so she could gain permission to make a new life in a new city.

Trowbridge considered Crawford to be his Court Jester, and thus granted him a great deal of leeway. However, while he indulged Crawfords mad passions he would not allow him to destroy the life of a new Childe. That is why he chose to have a tutor teach Anwen the ins and outs of being a Toreador and be sure that she learned the traditions well. He was most upset to find his Jester had been killed by a Hunter and while he chose to release Anwen to set her on an independent path he did not choose to keep her in his domain. Prefer instead to release her into the world with advice that she find herself a solid home and learn what it truly meant to be a vampire who stood on her own two feet.

So, this idea just popped into my head and it wasn't going to shut up until I managed to get it out. But it FEELS really rough and raw and frankly, badly written. So I'd love to get some feedback and thoughts on it.

As I mentioned before, I feel there is more to her than we read here, she's got so much going on, but there's very little about HER. It's all just events, no emotion added, if she was in a dungeon for two years, how did she feel about that? Where is her damage from it?

-Another alt? Why not play with your existing characters more?
-Not sure if "she got huge boobs" should be such a major plot point. Also not sure why a character happy to be in the limelight would go so far to get them.
-Why would the vamp turn his clothesmaker if he was going to keep her as a slave anyway?
-Where does all this happen?

Good point.

Her time spent being chained by her sire, the two years before Trowbridge arranged for her to get a real discipline trainer has caused her to develop claustrophobia which reduces her to a catatonic state. Basically she goes mentally numb when locked in a small space.

-Another alt? Why not play with your existing characters more?

I have 2 active characters and 1 character that is less than active because the character he's caught up with doesn't post much and might leave the board. Since I respect that player's feelings I'm not going to do anything to disrespect that bond. So that leaves me with 1 mortal and 1 vampire as active characters.

I started an entire thread on the subject of developing threads and story ideas between my existing characters and others and one of the biggest things I heard was that the characters I have now are not really "accessible" for people to play with.

-Not sure if "she got huge boobs" should be such a major plot point. Also not sure why a character happy to be in the limelight would go so far to get them.

There are a number of reasons why she wanted to get breast implants. She wanted bigger boobs because she felt they would improve her figure. It also lead to the poor decisions that lead to her entrance into the world of darkness. She wasn't happy with her body because she was jealous of other girls assets. Kato, the model she admires so much also has fake boobs, so part of it was hero worship.

So it reflects an insecurity and a desire she had to achieve a body image that she felt was "her." It also reflects the lengths she would go through to achieve what she wanted.

-Why would the vamp turn his clothesmaker if he was going to keep her as a slave anyway?

Because her Sire was mentally unstable. He saw a beautiful girl who had a beautiful skill and decided he wanted to keep it around forever without giving up his blood every month. It was an embrace of passion and mild insanity. An "Artistic act of passion" as he put it.

-Where does all this happen?

She was raised in Abercarn Wales. She went to visit the Jefferson Crawford in Cardiff Wales. When he came back and took her after her parents threw her out, he kept her in Cardiff. Cardiff is the Princedom of Trowbridge, who has been Prince there since the Dark Ages. (He's the last recorded Prince of Wales)

Can i just ask how many Alts YOU have Knoot? before you start flinging that one at other people?

..yes that DID sound rude and confrontational, didn't it? Go figure..
Yuki is somewhat small, with an athletic build but the muscletone of a wet noodle.
She looks to be in her early twenties.

Not in a fighting mood! Anyway I do hope Malia doesn't take my observations personally. They were asked for, after all.

Re: Characters
One vampire and one mortal might be enough if you make it work! There are plenty of angles of your current characters which may not yet have been explored. And if they've time they might just go and do something! Or maybe you want to participate in a miniquest or facilitate some other characters' plot or... whatever. My only stake in this is having to do another presentation thread for a character that might end up not being played much.

Re: Bewbs
Okay. If that was part of the background it would make sense to include it in the biography, makes it more of a sensible thing. I'm not sure if it is wise to push another highly sexualised female since you've been so disappointed with how it worked out in the past. What makes you think it'll be different this time?

Re: Embrace
Most Kindred don't Embrace because giving blood every month is inconvenient. Having a childe is FAR more inconvenient as they need to soak up a lot more blood than a ghoul's monthly allowance. They need to hunt. They need to be taught. Permission must be asked to Embrace them and they are on the hook if the childe does something Stupid. It just doesn't fit with the mildly neglectful profile of the Sire that I'm reading now, in my opinion.

I actually have submitted a miniquest idea to the moderators that I want to run, but it'll take time for the moderators to consider whether or not they'll allow the quest. I'm practicing patience and not rushing them because they have a lot on their plates at the moment. If the miniquest goes well I will consider running others for people if they enjoyed it.

While the characters are deeply interested in her appearance she's not actually sexual. I included in her profile that she was unimpressed with sex and while she is deeply interested in APPEARANCE, she is not all that interested in sex. She found sex to be tedious affair and disliked it.

Her sire was something of a court Jester for Trowbridge. A valued pet. Being from the Dark Ages Trowbridge believed in an older court structure. As an actor and thespian Trowbridge pampered and indulged Crawford. So while Trowbridge gave Crawford permission to SIRE a childe, he didn't leave the raising of that childe in the hands of her unstable Sire. Hence the tutor he ordered.

Some general questions to think about as you work on this character:

- Do you know what it is about your other characters that led people to say they were not accessible?

- What do you tend to like about other people's characters, and about threading with them?

- What about this write-up made you say it was rough and raw?

- What would this character's goal and/or niche in London be? What would she spend her time in London doing?

- Do you know what it is about your other characters that led people to say they were not accessible?

I don't know what about my characters people feel makes them hard to thread with. But ultimately a number of people have felt that there was nothing to be gained from interacting with my characters. Either the thread scenarios I start are too specific and thus they don't feel there is a way for them to interact, or because the characters are uninteresting.

Yet I have found consistently that even characters I made who were simple social figures have ended up being considered too extreme or too bizarre for people want to get mixed up with. As a result I've worked to make simpler and simpler characters in hopes that people would simply enjoy threading with them.

- What do you tend to like about other people's characters, and about threading with them?

I like just about everyone's characters. I enjoy reading new characters, watching people react to new things. I like seeing people do things I don't expect. I like watching characters act and react. I'm a relatively simple person that way. The whole reason I'm on a writing forum is to write with other people and I try to to interact with as many as will enjoy interacting with me. Yet I rarely end up with a repeat threads with people who want to interact with my characters a second time.

- What about this write-up made you say it was rough and raw?

I say it's rough and raw because I just blurted it out straight from my brain onto the page without taking a great deal of time to massage and edit it. I didn't work it over a few times to see how it would read. I just let my brain go and and put it on paper. Since it was sort of haunting me once I came across the picture and the initial concept started toying the inside of my brain.

- What would this character's goal and/or niche in London be? What would she spend her time in London doing?

The character's niche would be to be a toreador. To work on her art, to grow as a person. In part because there ARE very few members of clan toreador. But she's not made with any particular purpose in mind. She was made because the character idea exploded into my brain and refused to let go until I started putting it outside my brain.

This is true, but not for a reason I think you've yet considered. I know that because you have so many characters and go through them so fast, people tend to overlook them. I can think of nine characters you play/played offhand, all in under a year of real-time. I'm sure there's even more, and I wonder what the official count is. Each time you roll out yet another character, we all know that he/she will be gone in 8 weeks or so to be replaced by another alt with a similar lifespan. There's no incentive to get involved with them, it feels like a waste of time because we all know they're temporary and will be retired before long.

We don't have to wait till the morning, the Sun will never go down. And we will be this way forever.

Critique: Attempted to use Dice Roller to liven up story play. Rolled botches during presentation with Prince and later during Oubliette scene. Was told after he jumped out of the window that it was dawn outside. Chose not to metagame. As a result character death. This was also a fast made off the cuff character that I jumped into the board with, not having spent the time to actually get to know the board or how things worked on Danse Macabre

Floyd Finneman Fenderson - Created October 24 2013 - Died January 4th 2014 (elapsed time 2 months)
Presentation threads

Critique: Off the cuff comedic NPC designed to reduce the workload of Jhael, Moshe & Dove so that they did not have to do so many presentation threads all the time, thus allowing them more time to RP. Never intended as a serious character. Killed preventing a Tremere from killing the Prince.

Mississippi Odell Moses - Created January 4th 2013 - Retired March 25 2014 (elapsed time 3 months)
Presentation threads
1 tattoo thread
1 relationship thread
1 drinking thread

Critique: Another character designed as an NPC for the Blythe House. Was told halfway through that he HAD to be a full character and count against my character limit. Was told he was "a racist charicature." Was told he gave another player flashbacks to bad times in their life. This made it extremely uncomfortable to play him. Also got involved in OOC problems due to miscommunication between Moderators and another player with this character being the focal point.

Toran Craig - Created October 12th 2013 - Retired June 2014 (elapsed time 9 months)

* Numerous players Toran was involved with dropped threads and retired from the game, thus disrupting Toran's attempts to integrate into the social dynamic of the board.

Critiques: Feedback indicated that Toran reacted "too extremely" to things. That he was a Gary-Sue. That he was too smart. That he was too strong. That it wasn't fun interacting with him. Was asked NOT to get him involved in any chronicle related threads because they were "too cluttered already." Decided to retire him because feedback from moderators indicated he was considered a poor character.

Critique: Feedback indicates that he's "too accepting over the World of Darkness" that he "doesn't react strongly enough" Also that he can't be interacted with because he belongs to an Anarch.

* OOC discussions during character creation destined this character to interact with Sabbat players. Sabbat players then ceased playing for long periods of time leaving character at odds.
* Numerous attempts to connect this character to a vampire, resulting in single thread interactions and then said character leaving the game.
* In game experiences combined with Moderator Requested character flaws (ie drug use added on creation because she seemed "too positive") resulted in character that was no longer fun to play

Critiques: Feedback indicated Her boobs were too big. Her boobs were too big. She was "too friendly." She was boring. There was no logical reason to ever interact with her.

* Was asked to leave threads he joined on 2 occasions.

Critique: Feedback essentially amounted to "he's too scary" my character wouldn't interact with him.

Jericho Wryler - Created December 18th 2013 Retired February 2014 (elapsed time 2 months)

Critique: Feedback indicated he was a bland, relatively uninteresting character. Even I as the player had trouble getting into playing him.

Malia Hauke - Created March 10th 2014 (Still Active)
22 threads Posts 500

Critique: Generally a well received character. Seems to be well rounded. People so far seem to enjoy reading her threads.

Cameron Hughes - Created May 8th (Still Active)
10 threads Posts 188

* Cannot be overly active as his Domitor is partially retired and only posting once per week tops. So out of respect for that player, the character is essentially for interact with that player at that player's pace.

Critiques: Feedback so far: His Malkavian blood curse is too extreme. His derangement is offputting. He is uninteresting with little to offer by way of thread interaction.

Places where I put "feedback" marks where I have received opinions, critiques or comments from other players or the moderators that reflected how the character was received by the board. These do affect how I play a character as, since writing on a board is a social activity, I try to take the audience I'm writing for/with into consideration. The average amount of time I have played a character before deciding to retire them has been about 5 months. The exceptions to this are Erick, the first character I made when I knew just about nothing of how the board ran, and Jericho, who while a decent looking character on paper, just didn't play in an interesting way. It's debatable how to figure the two NPC designed characters I made for use in the Blythe House. They weren't made to be full flesh and blood characters that I go out an interact with the board in general with, they were intended to simply be used in presentation threads. Even then Moses received quite a bit of negative feedback, despite other people considering him the best character I played on the board.

When I've received a certain amount of negative feedback on a character, I acknowledge that it's a bad character and I walk away from it. I don't continue to push and push at it. I've been working with the moderators and those people actually willing to discuss my characters concepts in an attempt to see where my rough patches are that put people off playing them.

English Norwegian Spanish I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.

Blunt feedback time! Hope it won't be too unwelcome, but this be the call for advice.

I can only speak for myself, but what Dove said is a large factor for me. My preference is for slow building, long term intense relations that don't have to be friendly. Aside from vampire voodoo, Jhael might not like or click with someone at first, but in the long term things can change, whereas I've noticed your preference is for very quick, immediate pacing.

It's a social board, but on some level I think it's necessary to stick to and invest in what you really enjoy and if other characters (or even other people) dislike yours, shrug it and focus on who you have synergy with. Stressing to not be easily put off if other characters dislike your character, because that's not even a block for threading or roleplay. Conflict is fun. Antagonism is fun. When characters misunderstand each other and shit happens, it can be fun. Hell, when Jhael barely knew Dove, he beat the shit out of him in the loo and was like "this guy... wtf..." for a few following threads before they shared scary experiences together that grew. If Dove ran away and stopped threading with me when Jhael had a less than flattering first impression of him, nothing would ever have happened.

I'll admit that I did find Jen in particularly very awkward from the standpoint of how I see a lot of female characters made in most media. The hooks seemed focused on titillation for a heterosexual male audience, which isn't the majority demographic of players, or even characters here, which might be part of concern for this character for the err... bosomy backstory. My preference was for the Blythe House characters. In the situation where interaction is most likely with mine without needing to be immediately friendly. I like the possibility of antagonism and they were fun for me to read. Did not see Moses as a racist caricature at all. In fact, was very impressed and amused by his dig at Caston for his own kind of racist entitled attitude.

It might be too late, but a few things about Toran. This character had a lot of potential, he still had Lucy, Mac and Sawyer. He could build solid relations with George, get the Brujah connected to Nosferatu and such. Mods' concerns about him being that Gary Sue type could be dealt with. Both mortals and vampires might get to learn the hard way, imagine Toran gets scolded from time to time, or simply fails at his Cam work. It's the ability to stand against all odds and come out as a stronger/better person. Polish his talents that could contribute to Cam, work on serious flaws and keep the rest of his personality for him and close friends. Since Toran's status is now "on honeymoon", you can stil bring him back. Think about it, don't be Ares 2.0

One general advice I can give - drop the all-american attitude of your characters and try to get into european vibe, especially that Englishmen are well known for being phlegmatic pricks. An American freshly dropped in UK would sure diverge from the locals, but every lone immigrant eventually adjusts. The less backing from his natives, the faster adaptation

Britchan was an imageboard for British people who dislike mixing with foreigners. With a userbase composed entirely of chavs and pretend gentlemen, it eventually crashed and burned in a shitstorm of administrative incompetence and immigrant invasion. In short, it was a perfect reflection of British society.

Well, I'm very new, and perhaps should not post here, at this moment, but I just wanted to say that what Jhael wrote is really how I feel as well, generally speaking about RPing. I agree that antagonism is so important. For instance, that hug that Dove gave Jhael, in the bathroom, at that's soirée was so moving. I've not even read all of the interaction between those two characters, thus far - but just form that scene, it was clear that the antagonism had been there (or at least some discomfort between them) - and the fact that Jhael received what he so desperately needed from such an unlikely source, and so unexpectedly, made for a very intense moment. I was so moved by that. : )

It's nice that she makes costumes. Juliette would like some gowns, no doubt, heehee... if she could afford them ;)

Just wanted to say this. *takes little bow and moves quietly in the background*

There is negative feedback on your characters here that I don't agree with, or that wouldn't have been a problem for me. I might have more comments later. However, I wanted to comment now on Mississippi Odell Moses (MOM).

Racism is such a difficult thing. I don't wish to invalidate or minimize the sensibilities of those who might have seen racism with him. I don't see this as a 'right' or 'wrong' situation. So allowing for differing opinions; I didn't think he was a racist caricature.

I don't wish to minimize or invalidate that someone was triggered by MOM; I have my own (serious) triggers so I get that. If I found out that one of my characters were triggering someone I would feel awful about that. Even though I know it was not intentional, even though I know the one to blame for the trigger is whoever or whatever caused the trauma/damage in the first place. If the perceived racism was the trigger that is just as horrible as any other trigger.

Figuring out if something is racist or not is can be debatable. Triggers are not debatable. If you are triggered, you're triggered and it sucks.

I can't know how you feel, of course. But I imagine that getting feedback about racism and triggers must have been difficult. I know it would have troubled me. Putting myself in your shoes, getting the feedback you're describing would have horrified me. I would have been grateful for getting the feedback. I always want feedback. But, wow. This was rough. I am sorry for all concerned. Those who were uncomfortable, those triggered, and the writer.

I guess this stuff over MOM is old news by now, but I imagine something along these lines will happen again. Hopefully gentleness is our guide all around. No harm intended.
