Franca went to the coffee house straight away. She took a seat in a corner and ordered a coffee, which was going to be left untouched as usual. Assuming she was going to wait for a while, she opened her book on logics, the one she'd provided herself after with her meeting with that strange physicist... She didn't lose sight of the entrance, though, looking forward to talk privately with George. |

A bit later a taxi stopped in front of the coffee house and George entered the building. Looking around he went to the bar and with got a coffee before walking over to the table where Franca sat and sitting down with a nod and a smile. "There was something you wanted to talk about ?" |

Franca closed her book on fuzzy logic and greeted George as soon as she saw him. "I've been talking to Mr. Henderson, recently - she said, once they were both comfortably sat - and we had the chance to talk about the upcoming mission in Redbridge". She discreetly look around, checking if they were drawing some kind of attention. Nobody seemed to notice them, though, not as far as she could see. Franca continued: "The information he gave me wasn't completely consistent with what we had been saying last time... I know we hadn't been discussing the details so it may be just that, but still, I thought it was opportune to talk about it with you. "Last time, you've been talking about a mission to destroy two havens, that seemed pretty straightforward if I remember correctly. Now, Mr. Henderson's description of the scenario makes it seem a bit more mysterious - he said we don't know for sure what is hiding in Redbridge, there may or not be the Sabbat and we don't know how strong they may be. Also, he talked about an accident in Camden, of unknown origin". She paused, then continued: "I tried not to give details on what you told me or not, I said I was still waiting to discuss the issue in depth. I am a bit puzzled, if I can dare say, about the inconsistencies in information, especially as we are heading to such a delicate mission. I thought, at any rate, than discussing the issue with you were better than disclosing my concerns to the Seneschal". |

George looked at the book with a raised eyebrow, before focusing on her again though the eyebrow remained raised when she talked about a meeting with Henderson. "So he told you about that, before he told me ? Surprising..." He took a sip of coffee and nodded with a sigh. "I planned it to be as I told you originally but Mr. Henderson seems to have thought it would be necessary to alter the parametres. He actually pulled rank and issued new orders... Might make everything a bit more difficult, but I'm sure we'll manage..." Then he shrugged unsure what to say. "Let's just say he surprised me with that as well... Could have at least told me that in person..." |

Franca noticed George's look at her book. Oh well, they weren't there to discuss her reads... "He asked to meet me soon after my presentation, apparently he wanted to talk about the 'recent developments' and the role of newcomers... Actually, I don't know how 'recent' his information could be and if that was the reason why I got to hear it before you. Anyhow, he talked about a suspicious silence in the Sabbat areas, as less and less kindred have been seen on the borders and we are not sure what is going on among their ranks. I don't know how much you have been told about this... The strangest aspect is the possible presence of another subject, yet to be identified... He told me about 'earthquake' in Camden - it might very well have been an attack by someone, but we don't know whom. I don't know what information you have on this episode, or on other forces that may be bustling in London, besides the Sabbat and us". She had no idea of what George had been told, nor of why Henderson hadn't informed George. She understood her words might have opened some new can of worms, but clarifying the goal of their mission came first. |

George raised an eyebrow and the smile was gone suddenly. Henderson, of course... Possibly complicating matters with that... "I see... Sounds just like him..." Without saying more he looked at Franca to see how she reacted. After all Henderson had given her knowledge that might lead her to believe information had been withheld and that she couldn't trust her own Primogen... Someday, Henderson would get that back, eventually... "You know, it interests me what you think of it now that you know these things... Does it change something about the way you see the mission, this city or me ? Do you wonder why I didn't tell mention that ?" True, that question was both unexpected and perhaps mean, but it was interesting him... Taking a sip of coffee he waited for what she might say... and how she said it. |

"I have wondered, indeed", said Franca, "and I have hypothesized some scenarios, of none of which I can be sure". She leaned back in her chair and continued: "Henderson might have got those information just as I was walking up the stairs... you'll admit it sounds unlikely, though. "I could think you actually got the news after we talked, but before my meeting with Henderson; that would make sense, except you wouldn't have been surprised a minute ago. "Otherwise, you might have withheld some information; I don't see why you should have done that, since poor information would not exactly help our mission, and if that is the case I'd be glad if we could fix it now. "Other possible scenario - Henderson indeed withheld precious information from you and decided to inform me first. If that is the case, and since the Seneschal doesn't strike me as a stupid, he must have done it with a purpouse. I won't go too far, hypothesizing what this purpouse could be, by now. "As I said, I didn't disclose my perplexity to him since I wanted to confront you first". Franca scowled and took one of those needless-but-useful breaths: "I won't make snap judgments on either of you, George, not without knowing what is really happening. Let me just say I am not pleased with the whole situation, to use an euphemism - and not just because some of you guys are quite likely playing stupid games to each other and I got caught in the middle, but because we are heading to an important and dangerous mission, we are about to face the Sabbat, or maybe some other sort of abomination for what we know, and instead of being effective we can't even be clear to each other. We try to trick each other, for God's sake - how can we think to fight our enemies like that?" Franca was speaking more and more vehemently as she went on. Then she stopped, took another breath and run a hand down her forehead and hair. She continued, more calmly, although with a perceivable undertone of exasperation: "I'd like to think there is some simpler, more reassuring explanation, but it's not like I have much hope. I still -care- about our mission and this is the very reason of my concern. I care about the Camarilla and about kindred and humankind alike, I care about defending our only chance at civilization against the Sabbat and whomever wants to destroy it. I hope I am not the only one who has this as their very first concern". Another pause, another exasperated breath: "As for this city? It seems just like any other one, and this is the real issue". |

Smiling George looked at Franca and nodded. "I understand your point and thank you for voicing it, Franca ..." Scratching his head he seemed to think about a way to explain the dilemma he was in. Taking a sip of coffee he looked at her and sighed before speaking. "The point is that I don't know more about the Camden earthquake than you, just that it has happened and it might be natural or not... So if I mentioned that, it might cause questions I can't answer and if not, it might be seen as withholding information... Difficult thing, eh ?" Shrugging he continued to speak about games and missions. "If Henderson is playing a game with me, I'm not aware of that, I have to admit... I may be not really into politics but when lives are at stakes I think him and I are both not the men putting more risk in that mission by playing political games..." The smile reappeared as he shook his head when the topic came to humans and convictions, the Cam and the scum. "No, you aren't alone with that... At least I share that concern. After all, what would we be without the humans ? Monsters, just like Elders or the scum in the East, you know ? And I don't know your point of view, but I like being close to human... The Cam is a topic for itself though..." Raising an eyebrow inquisitively he looked at her in confusion as he didn't understand her point about cities... "Why is that an issue when a city is like every other city ?" |

Franca had suspected she was talking too much - which wouldn't have been unheard of - but George was still smiling, which was a good sign. She actually noticed that apparently he was -actually- drinking the coffee, although that oddity wasn't exactly the first issue in her mind. "I don't know what is going on, I just hope we can get our information straight in time for the mission". Because, eventually, that was her main concern. If indeed there were strange political games involved, she really could have done staying out of them. She still didn't like the impression there was something unclear - it wasn't just the earthquake, but the fact they didn't know if the Sabbat was still there... However, she decided to let it go. For that night at least. She didn't restrain a smile of relief when George said he shared her concerns. Actually, she had been afraid she had gone too far with her little speech on 'kindred and mankind alike'. "If I have to be honest, I'd just like to be close to humans and to talk to anyone freely. However I know I can't get too close without putting their lives at threat. A downside of the Masquerade, as we all know". It was for such reasons that she considered the Masquerade nothing better than a necessary evil, but she didn't really want to get into that. "I don't see humans as -disposable-, anyway, and I must say I have some problem when I find someone in the Camarilla who treats them as such. It makes me think, do we have different values or are we just a politer, more hypocritical version of the Sabbat? Of course, I am just using a paradox". Yeah, she hoped George wouldn't have denounced her for treason because of that... She winced a bit, however, when he mentioned Elders altogether alongside with the Sabbat. She did understand what George meant, she had seen more than a few like that, but she felt she had somehow to defend her sire: "I do believe we can be better than monsters, while the Sabbat seems to think being a monster is the best you can get. However, believe me or not but it has been an Elder who taught me to respect humans and to be better than a mindless devourer in a thin disguise. I was brought up to believe we are not just predators and preys but all parts of the same society, even though we have to stay hidden. You know, old fashioned Brujah ideals, one does not really want to get me started on those". "As for this city being the same as the others - she explained - I just meant that I see a pattern, getting lost in political games when there would be more serious issues to care about is something I have seen pretty much everywhere. So it's not a complaint about London, but the fact it's so widespread makes it a worse problem as a whole. But well, I just hope you're right and that it won't interfere with the mission". "So do I and I also hope that the cause of the quake won't be part of the job..." On the part of the downside of the Masquerade George nodded, as he could understand her view quite well... After all he had those thoughts as well, partially at least. "That's the downside of it, true... But there are some who'd kill us, if they knew, so the Masquerade has its reason to be, although it sometimes seems... excessive. Most of the times it's safer though not always pleasant..." When the topic came to those that saw humans as disposable, the smile faded and was replaced by a mask of disdain and when he spoke his voice had an acidic touch to it. "I hate those people as well... Truth be told that is one of the reasons why I can't get along with Princey and his bunch of people... Or those in general who treat ghouls like either pets or tools... Can't stand that, you know ?" Tilting his head he nodded though with a bit of strain of strain in the re-emerged smile. Now they were really on the territory where any unseen listener could get them arrested for treason. "I prefer not to dwell on that question too much... Maybe the Cam isn't as good as some try to make us think, but what are the alternatives ? Besides the system can be changed, I hope... Not suddenly, but given time and people taking part in the change it should be possible, I fancy thinking..." "So there are Elders that aren't lost cases... interesting. Never met one of those, I think... Though I'm not really sure of that, of course. But it's good that there are people teaching respect for humans to the childer..." "Ideals ? I'm sorry but I don't have much of a clue what you're talking about. We didn't get to that, as practical things were more important in my education... Or so I was told at least..." "Oh yes, the political games... Make me consider resigning once in a while... Though I hope that serious endeavours like this one are beyond the games, I'm not sure the snobs are keeping to that... But I perhaps see things too black..." With another resigned sigh he emptied his cup and looked at it gloomily. |

"Of course, there are people who'd kill us, just for what we are..." ...and because of the physical risks and the obvious difference in powers - it wasn't really honest to treat the issue as merely a matter of prejudice. "Besides, it's sad to say but some of us would have no restraints if they hadn't got to stay hidden to protect their personal interest. I can't count the times I advised against the murder of some innocent arguing that it wasn't Masq-safe. Damn, isn't it awful when you can't even mention what's right or wrong on an ethical plan, because it would be dismissed as childish or irrelevant? It reflects rather poorly on our kind and I had my good deal of bad fights over such topics, especially when I was younger, but in the end we have to work with what we have, and if the Masquerade can prevent some pointless cruelty so be it". She took yet another mental note on Mr. Princey - so he was one of those who treated people as either pets or cattle. Not really a surprise, but good to know and take in consideration. "So I see no alternatives, either, not in the forseeable future at least. As I said, I like to believe we are different from our enemies in values and not only in methods. But in the end the result is what matters, as I said, and the Camarilla is the best we have at hand". She consider adding "and of course my everlasting loyalty is out of question", but there was no need to be that ridiculous. She had the feeling they were treading on thin ice, always one step and one word from declaring something that could have been compromising... She remember feeling like that when she was still a student in Turin and she talked with other dissidents in some public place, trying to understand each other without saying too much. It was an awkward thought - she wasn't supposed to be a Camarilla dissident. "Besides, I agree with you it's a system we can hope to improve - she added - Not that I have a clue where to start, but we can afford being long term planners" She didn't know how little George actually knew about their Clan's history, but since they were already talking about the Masquerade and the relation with humans the connection was quite fluid. "I think, our Clan has its long tradition when it comes about being closer to humans. Until the Middle Ages our ancestors believed they could really reenact the ideals according to which Carthage had been built - vampires and humans living together in as good an approximation of harmony as you can get, with no need of Masquerade or deception - you might have heard about that". She tried her best not to make it sound as a lecture, just aiming at explaining which 'ideals' she had just casually referred to. While both theory and practice had had an important role in her education, she thought that having solid principles in things that mattered was much more important than having learnt some history lesson. "Honestly I don't know how it could have worked and I don't see either species mature enough to live up to such principles. But I think it's a beautiful utopia, and not a degradation as some may call it. And as I said, I also think that, Masquerade or not, we are one society as a whole - we are not a bunch of demigods with the self-appointed right to screw others as we please. But sorry, I really talk too much". Another slight wince when George said about resigning - she knew little about the local specifics ad even less about his standing, but they seemed to agree on a few things and besides, the idea of the clan having no representation was disturbing. "I understand, it can't be fun to keep up with the political game, except that when one ignores it somebody worse would take care of it". She fiddled with her cup as she could not really drink. "What do you mean, you are not sure if the snobs are keeping to that?" Edited by Franca, Sunday, 14. September 2014, 12:40.

George smiled, then he took a sip of coffee while he thought on what to say. "You have a point there... It is awful having to argue about those things, not to mention it's really tiring to have the same argument again and again and again... I think you're more familar with that than I am." On the topic of havig no alternatives to the Cam he just nodded with a look as if to say 'how right you are there'... When the talk came to Carthage he listened and thought for a while on what he heard before speaking. "Sounds like one of those utopian thingies that are easy to write about but hard to put into effect, though a more connected society where hiding wouldn't be as necessary would be good, I think sometimes when I actually get to think about those things..." On politics he just sighed and took a sip of coffee before speaking. "Yes, it is a drag and yet I can't ignore the politics... sadly. Perhaps it is time to get a Whip, just in case..." Then he just shrugged, not knowing how exactly to tell her. "I don't know if Princey and family actually can stop the games, you know ? I don't trust them much and I've not been corrected on that yet..." |

"Utopias don't usually translate well into political plans... Also, slightly off topic, I am somehow wary of societies that call themselves 'perfect' - more often than not it's just an excuse not to accept criticism - not that I am thinking to specific examples..." Well, she had seen some Prince like that but she could have done without saying it. "What is more interesting about utopias is often how people relate to them. Now we can talk about how secrecy is a lesser evil, and say how a more connected society would be a good thing if feasible - someone else would have dismissed the whole concept as debauchery because we are sublime predators and yada yada... Well, I suspect we've already heard enough of those". Also, she knew they had much more immediate concerns. "Max told me of the perpective to appoint a Whip, when we met. He seems quite interested in that charge, I don't know if you had already talked about that. At the moment, however, we are in, what, four?, so I thought it wasn't among the immediate plans". She nodded, more pensively than in agreement, when George said about the Prince. "There was another thing I wanted to ask you about, after my meeting with Henderson. I am still not sure what to think of it, though...". Maybe it was nothing, maybe it was a most delicate topic. Most likely, more political subtleties for them. |

"I think utopias are nothing achievable but rather an idea to strive getting close to, you know ? Perfection is indeed dangerous, as I couldn't tell you one single thing which is... But we don't need a debate about that topic, right ? Neither need we another debate about secrecy. At least I had too much of that already..." Sighing George nodded while cursing internally. It seemed like Max was trying to make it clear to everyone that he should be Whip, which was... unfortunate at best and problematic in the worst case... "He seems to be, yes, but I don't think if a Whip is needed he'll get the post... He's still Sheriff of Dresden and spending half a year there, so he has quite enough on his plate, I think..." Nodding to himself he paused for a bit and then continued with the topic, leaving the main point out for the moment, as that was a wholly different matter... "Fact is, if something should happen to me, we'd need someone who can take over without loss of time... But perhaps we better talk about that another time, don't you think ?" At the mention of 'another thing' he raised an eyebrow quizzically, as he was pretty surprised. "What would that be, if I may ask ? You know you can speak freely, if you want." |

Franca was about to open her mouth and comment - except, she grasped Geroge's not-so-subtle hint not continue the debate. And he was right, they didn't really need to discuss utopias that night. It was better to drop the topic, then, before she'd been carried away. What George said about Max as a potential Whip was somehow surprising to Franca. When the Ancilla had mentioned his ambitions, the affair had seemed rather unproblematic. Now from George's perspective the same situation appeared in quite a different light. "I thought Max was planning to move permanently to London, thereof his interest in having duties here - or, have you heard anything different? Anyway I doubt he'll be able to keep his office as a Sheriff if he's not in Dresden all the time. I mean, it's just common sense". Or wasn't it? "Anyway, if you want your Whip to be elected by the clan, majority will decide... And since we are at it, I think I should inform you that Max asked me my vote in exchange for his signature". As she was speaking, she realized how the situation seemed now much less limpid than she would have liked. She looked at George, hoping that at least the election had been truly an idea of him. Then the other ambiguity on the plate. "Well, I have been talking with Henderson about the upcoming mission and, more in general, about how security is administered in London; I wasn't looking for anything suspicious, I already knew that you were leading the expedition as the officers were busy with some other job, but still I was a bit surprised when he referred to the whole mission as a private pet project of yours - a vendetta, I think he called it; I was surprised because to me nothing screams 'common interest' more than getting rid of the Sabbat, whoever is organizing the practical matters. I tried to inquire a little further, but he reacted quite defensively, as if I had insinuated that the Prince doesn't care about the Sabbat, and stressed all the support you're receiving. I didn't insist since, well, I didn't -really- want a fight with the Seneschal on our very first meeting. We left with the understanding that it was a simple matter of organization and that anything else had been a poor choice of words... still it sounds kind of odd to me, but maybe I just lack some background information". She stopped talking, her pitch of voice still high as she had interrupted herself mid-sentence. She wasn't sure that speaking her mind were such a smart choice, but she hoped her point was clear, if nothing else. |

"I don't know if he has such plans. Until now he hasn't been giving up his office there and I doubt he'll do that unless he has an office here to be 'secured', you know ? I don't know why he can be here and remain Sheriff... perhaps he's just titularly Sheriff and his deputies do the whole work, who knows ?" "I don't think they are voted on, at least they weren't when Palmer was Primogen and Primogen whateverhisnamewas in Belfast did it that way too... So as far as I know the Primogen himself determines his second-in-command. I don't know who said there was a vote about that... Perhaps we'll have to call a meeting about that where I'll decide on that..." Hearing that Max tried to not only insist on a vote but also tricked himself an unfair advantage if it came to one didn't really seem to please him. Instead he got up and threw the table which unloaded the things on it on the floor where they broke before it flew in a corkscrewing movement against the wall and broke into pieces which fell on the ground. "He did WHAT ? That slimy little scheming RAT !" After the last bits of wood had hit the floor he sat down again with an apologetic smile. "Sorry, I had to do that, where were we ?" A pause was caused by an angry waiter who looked at the pieces of the table and started to demand compensation for the furniture. Upon receiving a small pile of banknotes he left again and George turned to Franca again. "Oh, right, that topic... Well, that is a bit difficult, you know ?" For a while he sat motionless thinking about how to relay that bit of information to her, before starting. "You see, it is indeed kind of a personal vendetta with the people we're going to visit at least... I had a few people volunteered to help, true, but they only call it an official thing, so they get the credit if it works while I carry the risk, as always..." At the point of Henderson indignantly correcting her, he just shrugged with a hint of a smile. "Well, he's an officer of the domain, he has to say that... Official point of view and all that, you know ? Perhaps his personal opinion is different, who knows ?" |

I don't think they are voted on, at least they weren't when Palmer was Primogen and Primogen whateverhisnamewas in Belfast did it that way too... So as far as I know the Primogen himself determines his second-in-command. I don't know who said there was a vote about that... What? George knew nothing about it? When Max had told her that the Primogen himself wanted the Whip to be elected by the Clan? Not that it was really unexpected - nothing was really unexpected at that point... Franca was about to say something - and something pissed off - when suddenly the table flew to the wall, as George yelled in an unintelligible language. Franca got up in time to dodge the pieces of shattered wood and pottery that bounced back from the wall. "We were at the point - she said, once the mess with the waiter had been settled - where someone buys my vote for an election that he had apparently made up out of thin air". She grinned nervously. "We might talk about it another time, maybe" she added - because, really, she didn't want to go there, not now, not while a part of her was screaming in revolt against the whole load of bullshit, the fact she had trusted Max, that she had been so easily manipulated, that - she did NOT want to dwell on that, did she? Franca fell back on her chair, with a slightly psychotic gaze. After a few seconds she murmured: "Then if there won't be any election the boon would be pointless anyway". Which only added a further twist of idiocy to the already unpleasant affair. Was Max an imbecile, besides being a manipulative bastard? But - what about her purpose to focus on something else, uh? 'Something else', unfortunately, was only productive of other despicable mindfucks. "I think I'll pass on the power games behind the mission since we're not getting anything good from them. For how I see it these people may be your personal enemies or not, it doesn't change the fact that it's not thinkable to let them roam free, allowing them to organize their mass embraces or whatever they do to increase their forces". The memory of the mass embraces she had seen gave her the creeps, but still talking about their upcoming battles kept her more grounded than discussing about slimy political tricks. "And since we are at it, if we manage to capture those... people... they probably also know something about the other mysteries that are going on in Redbridge. Although you might have other plans". Then she nodded when George said Henderson had to repeat the official point of view. "Yes, I get it, he couldn't tell the Prince doesn't give a damn about the Sabbat. I just wonder why he simply didn't tell it was an official mission that you were guiding for whatever reason. But I suspect we'll never really know". |

George thought for a while then he shrugged, his face a mask of indifference, as he didn't really care why Max had done that... Only sure thing was that he'd pay for that... "He probably expects that we do things here like they do it in Dresden, as if there'd be any sort of internal ritual for those things... Well, he'll be awfully disappointed when the meeting is held, won't he ?" With a wink and an evil grin he thought loudly how to give Max' ambitions a little bump to slow him down a bit. "Well I think we should do that at the meeting where the official Whip is determined... I'd ask you to leave him in the dark until then... Would be a nice punishment, eh ?" On the topic of political games, he just nodded with a sigh and for a moment he seemed to be tired. "I'd prefer that as well, if I could, alas I can't...And while it seems to be true that the leadership of the domain doesn't apparently care as much about the scum as I do, they at least had the decency to help me out with some men..." With a shrug and a smile he continued on that hoping he could make her understand. "And that's why I'm doing all this, you know ? To be able to have a scum-free city once for a bit before others of their sort come from somewhere and infest the domain again... I'm actually glad I have people seeing things the same way..." |

Franca thought about George's suggestion for a while. "I don't know how things are done in Dresden and I don't care, however I don't like to be told lies. Well, there should be no need to say it, isn't it?" Indeed, that meeting was going to be an interesting one, if all the schemes were going to be revealed at once. "If you think it's better so... Normally, I would have gone and confronted him directly, although since we are both involved in the same mission it might be better not to start a conflict now". They were ignoring the elephant in the room, that is to say who was going to be the Whip. Franca, for a few reasons, would have rather ignored that thought. "You know what's curious, that if I know my clansmates as I think I do, Max would be the only one to actually want an office that badly". She said she didn't want to think about Max and his tricks but, as all the topics you'd love to avoid, the thought was quite impossible to ignore. "Well, I agree with you, as for what the Sabbat is concerned. The thing is, to me it's just common sense, and when I suspect those in charge don't consider it a priority I wonder what a 'priority' could ever be instead". Indeed, what? Ensuring that Blythe House was substance-free? Getting yet another portrait? Anything they'd loved and cared about would have been wiped away if the Sabbat had taken over. Not to mention about those who could not help themselves. |

"Not really, let's just say I don't like that kind of behaviour inside the family very much..." The bomb was indeed kept for the meeting, as it might cause trouble now and that wasn't good at all... "It is, I'd say. That way we not only can focus on the mission first and deal with that problem later and rationally, but there is also the possibility to show him that those tricks don't always work as intended, you know ?" He just nodded upon the topic of Max being the only one actively wanting an office. For a moment it seemed like he wanted to rest his hands on the table that was no longer existant, but then just tented his hands. "Apparently, yes. Though I was taught that sometimes the man most eager to fill a post isn't necessarily the best man for that post... Exactly that seems to be the problem in this situation as I see it..." He just shrugged, his face indicating that he didn't really bother about the priorities of Blythe House. "I actually don't try to think what might be a priority to them, only causes headaches... It seems they are too far away from us to see the basic necessities, you know ?" |
