The Kindred Chronicle
Key Figures
THE MONSTER OF EALING
Last night, several people reported the sighting of a "screaming red monster" in a quiet neighbourhood of Ealing. After a power shortage in the area, a building caught fire. It was then when, what was described as a "man shaped, footless creature" emerged from the flames, leaping, running, and screaming. One woman has told our reporters that the man had "teeth like a wolf, and the face of the devil". Police officers are still trying to get to the bottom of this; neither the power shortage nor the fire have still been explained. A spokesperson from Scotland Yard has stated that the "so called monster" might be a wounded person, escaping the fire.

TRAGEDY IN TOOLEY STREET
The police has found the bodies of three TFL workers in the construction site at Tooley Street. One of their colleagues raised the alarms last week, when the three workers didn't attend their shifts. The bodies of the men have been found in a deep hole, uncovered by the refurbishment works that are taking place in the area. According to the Police, the bodies were horribly mutilated, which has led to the wildest speculations. The names of the three workers are being kept anonymous, following the wishes of their families.

HOROSCOPE
MARCH 8 - PISCES
You are used to making sacrifices, to prioritising the happiness of others before yours. Even though that is a noble attitude, there are times in life where the only healthy alternative is to embrace your own selfishness and allow yourself some enjoyment. Reserve one hour per day to do something you really like. Treat yourself! Your colour for this month is blue.
Echoes from the past ring back into London. Their intensity increases until they are deafening. What once was a faded memory of a glorious time, now becomes a shocking reality. The consequences of actions taken decades ago ripple into the present, altering the lives of everybody in the City. Unguided and blind, Kindred wander around, trying to make profit out of the reigning chaos.

The appearance of four mysterious figures turned the city upside down. Mistrust and jealousy became the official currency of London. Serpents and fiends rise to power, misdirecting the blaming eyes of the Camarilla towards imaginary enemies. Only those with clear vision and the ability to trust each other strive, while the rest run towards a shallow grave.

Anna nodded a little.

"Probably cause it's easier to be leeches than, y'know, upstanding fucking citizens." She grunts before smiling playfully for a moment and nodding. "I can't imagine. Well, I guess I can. I didn't get asked if I wanted to be Ghouled, but it saved my life..." She trailed off.

Franca smirked. She didn't mind Anna's cheekiness, not at all, even though she knew it was a risky attitude - or maybe she liked it even more because of that.

"Hey, don't say it too loud! - she said, with obvious sarcasm - We're not 'leeches', we're awesome super predators who reign at the top of the food chain, or at least that's the story some people loves to tell. Now tell me, when was the last time you thought to your place in the 'food chain' as if it were an important part of your identity?"

Because, really, that piece of vampiric rhetoric was quite stupid once you made the effort to think about it.

"Do you mean, it saved your life because you knew too much?"

She didn't know how Anna had been ghouled, but knew that binding someone was often a way to cover a Masquerade breach.

Anna shot her a grin, eyes twinkling as she laughed.

"Fucking never. Actually I lie - in this case quite a lot. Regardless of whether you're predators or parasites, most of you could snap me in two or mindfuck me, so." She smirked. "Don't do too well against a .45 to the skull or fire, though. Or sunlight. But to you lot? Don't get why it matters. So you drink blood. Big fucking whoop."

A playful wink before she sighed quietly.

"Nah. Like I said, Chicago is Sabbat territory. I picked off one too many Fangers preying on innocent people and leaving their bodies out to rot. Kids, too." She shook her head. "Apparently someone took notice. Lured me out into this warehouse with a guy they'd kidnapped from my class. College, y'know? And... jumped me. Beat me within an inch of my life and left me to die. I would have died, but... one of Lessa's friends found me. And, well, long story short, got me back to her and it saved my life."

A smirk.

"Locked myself in the bathroom when I found out. She managed to talk me down though." Anna smirked.

Yes. The Ghoul was talking to a vampire about how to kill a vampire. It could have counted as a suicidal move, except it was amusing.

"I think most of us have to rationalize the fact we need to prey on humans and they do it in a twisted way, instead of treating it as a matter of fact. It's not something you can just shrug off, especially when you're not talking theories but are actually there. Not that I am making excuses for anyone, I just try to understand the phenomenon - but then if you have immortality and superpowers you should also have the brains to deal with your own angst instead of bullying others to feel better".

Franca listeded attentively to the girl's story. So Lessa and her friends had gone out of their ways to save her. Most vampires, even in the Camarilla, would have just ensured she was actually dead. She waited for a few seconds before saying anything.

"I have to apologize for how I have reacted when you said you'd been a hunter. Avenging a deliberate massacre of innocents? That is nothing but admirable".

Also, she was probably braver than all them, since she was fighting against more powerful opponents with the little skills an ordinary mortal could have had. Not that she couldn't sympathize with that too...

"How long ago was it?" she asked then, just because she didn't know what else to say on the episode of her ghouling.

Anna gave a nod and a smile. Yup, she liked Franca a hell of a lot. The woman had a lot of sense in her, and Kindred or no she could respect that.

Plus she was drop-dead gorgeous, but hey.

"Thanks. It's what I grew up learning how to do. Protecting the innocent from the things people don't deserve to know exist." She laughed at how cheesy that sounded. "And no problem. I'd probably react the same way, I guess."

A pause.

"About a year, I think? Around that." Anna murmured. "I'm honestly not too sure."

"Sure, you've been taught that way, but how many would have escaped at the first chance? There are people who care enough to get into troubles and people who don't... and for some reason these days one cannot talk about anything valuable without sounding old fashioned or something..."

Damn postmodernism, really.

"Hm. You're younger than I thought, you know? I mean, you seem to know a few things about our society".

As she was speaking, a squeaking couple, quite obviously high on drugs, entered the alley and hurried behind a dumpster.

"...I've been too busy speaking to realize it but maybe this isn't the best location to have a chat? There's a more comfortable place not far from here".

Anna smiled a little, almost sadly.

"Not that I hadn't pondered it in more ways than one, but... if not me, then who?" She smiled quietly before chuckling. "Well, I already knew quite a bit - and what I got wrong I was corrected on. Plus, I love learning. That shit keeps me alive, for one."

Anna watched the couple with a grin.

"Unless you're up for a quickie, sure." She jested with a grin, following the Kindred out of the alley.

Franca smiled without commenting. Not by words at least. If not her, whom? 'Anyone else but not me', someone would have said. Someone would have tried to forget, not to learn more. But, even more than being ghouled or embraces, those were things you could not really choose.

She guided Anna out of the alley and away from the crowded area. Not far from there was a pub The Other Inn. It was less of a place to hook up and more the kind of pub where you can drink and talk; a bit run-down, but not outrageously so.

Franca adjusted her dress and closed her jacket a bit; she wasn't trying to look like a hooker this time. They took a seat at a table in a corner out of sight.

"So here we are... and you should tell me what you like since, you know, I am going to pass you 'my' drink".

Anna smiled softly, watching her as they lounged at the table, pursing her lips.

"Just a soda please. Uh. Coke." She corrected herself with a smile, watching Franca with a light smile before yawning and scratching the back of her head. "You know I'm kinda glad I'm used to being awake at night. I dunno how someone who wasn't used to it would cope."

"You know? I have no idea how much the blood would help coping with a screwed up sleeping pattern. But, well, I guess one does get used. For us it's somehow easier since we don't feel proper fatigue, we just faint at sunrise and that is it... Although we need even more to re-adjust all our habits, for obvious reasons".

She leaned towards Anna to speak. The music wasn't so high to cover her words, but high enough to prevent eavesdropping from other tables. Acceptably Masq-safe.

Anna laughed.

"Not much, let me tell you." She teased before nodding. "I had to drag Lessa into bed once when she got too busy and... well, didn't realize the time. You're fucking heavy when you're dead weight, let me tell you." She laughed.

Franca chuckled.

"And here you see why Ghouls need to be stronger than humans. Otherwise we'd have to spend more nights on the floor".

A waiter came to take their orders. She asked for two cokes and waited for him to be gone before she continued.

"I've never seen one of us while sleeping, since, well, I had no idea vampires existed before I was about to become one. I've seen many staked ones but that is a different business. You know, I usually think to myself as a 'living' creature, even though not in a biological sense, but it must be harder to remember it once one is lying still".

Anna laughed a little and smiled, accepting the coke and lifting it to her lips, taking a drink.

"Peaceful and relaxed, honestly. It helps to think you're asleep and not, y'know, literally dead." She chuckled gently.

"Yes, it helps to think like that, isn't it? I guess it's why most of us continue to sleep in a bed instead of just lying anywhere. Or using a coffin, which is reserved for those who have seen too many films".

She chuckled. Legends and literature about vampires held some truth, but other myths were quite ridiculous if you tried to related them to yourself. As for pop culture, well...

"So you said you've been always known about vampires, right? Now that I think about it, I went from thinking they were a slightly silly folk tale to actually being one in the time of a night. So the first times a little part of me found it somehow incongruous that I wasn't dwelling in a spooky manor or wearing old fashioned clothes for no reason. Now, on the other hand, when a new depiction of vampires is announced I wonder what they're going to make up this time".

"A kid in my class slept in a plush coffin bed. Shit was fucking weird." She snorted, sipping the coke before grinning slightly.

"See, the thing is - movies pegged your kind good. Really good. Not perfectly, but even average joe knows to try sunlight and fire on you." She shook her head a little. "If I didn't know any better I'd say someone leaked your shit way back when. But on another note; as you can imagine I tend not to be able to enjoy Vampire movies." She smirked.

"I don't know for sure, but it's not strange that some information has leaked during the ages. Maybe, making it all pass for fiction was the only way to save the Masquerade. As for vampire movies, I can relate. The same goes for most fantastic and adventure stories, actually. I was a sucker for adventure novels when I was a kid, but now, well, I think my nightly experiences are enough".

She smirked and looked away for a second.

"Which makes me think to your friend with his plush coffin bed. I guess, if your life is too normal you desperately look for something that makes you feel special. Maybe".

Anna nodded a little.

"Maybe. Is it any wonder the Cam cling to the Masquerade as hard as they do? However it's happened, you've given the cow the shotgun." She grinned before laughing. "I can't say I imagine, but... yeah, I've not been short for drama either."

She smirked then.

"Sometimes I wish mine was normal, but... better me than anyone else I grew up with. And even now, I could never go back to living in ignorance."

"Maybe they already had the shotgun, and we just convinced them that it wasn't worth fighting an imaginary enemy. Then, as you can guess, I don't think that everything boils down to mutual fear. This doesn't mean I don't see reality..."

She nodded as Anna went on speaking.

"I'd be an hypocrite if I said I wish I had a normal life. I could have had a very normal life; I could have married a handsome rich guy, bore his children and be done with that. A woman of my time wasn't really supposed to make her own choices or have a mind of her own; as for being a fighter? That was the very least thing I could have been expected to do. But then, to be happy with that I would have needed a much higher tolerance for injustice and there's no way I can wish I had it".

Anna laughed a little.

"True. Except mutual fear or not, if word got out badly it wouldn't stop the guys with twelve extra hours and modern firearms from reducing Kindred to chunky salsa all over the globe." She smirked a little before smiling.

"Mmm you could have. Shit, I could have been born to a dad that didn't know and grown up, lived and died having never known. But I didn't, this is my hand and I'm gonna see it through."

"Sure. Also a lot of humans would die in the process, and not only those who'd hunt us. Do you think that a bunch of panicked vampires would have many restrictions? Although eventually the humans would prevail... and I have no interest in discussing who'd have it worse, it's not something that should happen anyway".

She frowned, discussing such things with a mortal always sounded like a mutual threat, even if that wasn't the intention of either.

When Anna told about her life could have been different as well, Franca smirked and said: "You know? Your case could seem rather different from mine. You had no way to choose your family, while I actively went out of my way to make my life more complicated. I've been a political dissident when it was just on this side of being a suicidal choice; I refused to escape across the border when I was given the chance, I ended up shooting Fascist soldiers instead of simply working as a support. Sure, later I didn't ask for the attention of a Brujah Elder, but nobody would have ever noticed me if I'd stayed in the kitchen to begin with. So it seems I had a lot of ways out. Except, taking any of those would have implied being a different person, so the difference is more blurred than one could think".
