Seeing how often we get new players that had little experience with Vampire the Masquerade previously or are always willing to read someone elses opinions, here are a set of advices i would give to them. When making a character: Pick something you feel comfortable with, specially if this is your first time. Picking something or making something way too complex ends up being complicated to roleplay, moreso if you're not so versed in the subject. When playing: Since this small guide is directed to new players here are the basics that might confuse you: Frenzy: Wall of text Red fear: Wall of text Both of this things generally are overlooked, the tl;dr version would be: Frenzy is not a "combat-mode" which you can get in and out anytime, it represents the lose of control over frustration or anger. You will do anything to destroy that which is responsible of your anger, and if its not possible, or if its already done, you will turn against anything and anyone, friends, the archbishop, a primogen, etc. This does not grant additional strength or speed to your character, but he will ignore any wounds he recieve until he meets his final death or reaches the end of the frenzy, moment in which all the pain and handicaps from his wounds will return. It is possible to "snap" out of a Frenzy. Rotschreck acts in a similar way. Fire and sunlight will most likely trigger this, and if not, the fear will be always present at some extent. Aside from fire and sunlight other situations might trigger this reaction, such as vampiric powers or a potentially dangerous situation. Vampires sleep during the day. They don't remain awake like if nothing playing solitary or the likes. Any vampire will feel this need, and i underline need to sleep. Assume your character will fall dead after sunrise. And this is not likely to be avoided without a proper stimulus. Stimulus? What does that mean? It means your vampire will most likely fall asleep as soon as there is nothing in his immediacy that means danger. Say, if you're sleeping in your haven peacefully and a hunter breaks in kicking the door of your bedroom, you will most likely wake up for the moment being though not always. Then you will be able to remain active for a few moments before the day claims you again, regardless if there are no more enemies on sight. This depends on each individual, ancient vampires are more likely to feel the weight of the sun, while young vampires are able to put up more resistance. The more distant a vampire is with his human side or path of enlightment, althought more free from a morale point of view, it is more suceptible to the beast and the overwhelming sleep of the day. Now it is cool and all for everyone to want and have a superb vampire, but it gets tiring when a vampire always avoids frenzies, never succumbs to rotschreck, because naturally it would be humilliating and look bad on such a badass guy/girl. "Fire? Yeah i brush my teeth with the stuff". Same that applies to Mary sues and James bonds, or void characters. Mary Sue? James Bond? Not familiar with that as a term? It means someone who excells at everything, or just don't fails at anything. They can drive tank, a car, a bike, know how to shoot with every weapon, know everything there is to know about everything, they are not surprised by anything, nevel feel fear, never hesitate, don't make mistakes, etc. They are there to steal the spotlight or show how awesome they are, and generally bore the hell out of the rest of the players. Going on, give your character weaknesses, perhaps a personality quirk, MOTIVATION is really important. Why doesn't your character just stay home and watch tv? What does he like? The small preferences linked to the character's history, the fears he has, everything will make your roleplay more interesting for other players. A void character is a boring one. Havens, weapons, vehicles, be cognizant with all this. Referring back to the Mary Sues/James Bonds, your haven won't have armored blast doors, security cameras, superhard unhackable security, and dreamland design. Why not? Because it would be unreal, specially if your character has only recently arrived at London. Secondly, did your character build/made all that by himself in such a short time? Going back again with the James bond, it is assuming your character is a professional engineer, designer, blacksmith and architect, and has contacts and the immense ammount of time and resources he needed to buy or get all that stuff. Even if not by himself that is borderline unreal. Only Nosferatu (the warrens) have so much security, mounted weapons and all, I assume. And this is because of the Nicktuku and all their deal, and because they have been in the city for such a long time they had enough time to buy/get it, program the cameras, design the stuff, dig it, deal with the electricity and other needs. It takes years and a lot of support to build a fortress like that. The weapons follow a similar pattern. You don't see many vampires with a bazooka or a missile launcher, do you? Figures, you don't see any. Don't pull flamethrowers or heavy weaponry out of thin air, even incendiary ammo follows the same pattern. Because a) In game these things are really hard to get and take time and contacts, and probably, anyone that can get you such stuff is already ghouled by someone else, or is an underling of someone else. And by someone else I mean a Setite or an older vampire than you with way more influence, more prone to contacts and all. Dealing with these guys is nothing a regular neonate with no friends or reputation can do easily, since it has nothing to offer. b) OOC it just kills the fun, there is no threat to anything if you can get a laser gun that instantly kills everybody and problem solved. I should compile this stuff and check the spelling but i need to post it. Later on i will add more topics to it. Feedback and comments would be appreciated. Edited by Makie, Thursday, 8. Tell me now, is there a man among you here, Is there no one who will stand up and try to fight? Tell me Man, is there not one in all your ranks, Is there no one who values courage over life? | |
