The Kindred Chronicle
Key Figures
THE MONSTER OF EALING
Last night, several people reported the sighting of a "screaming red monster" in a quiet neighbourhood of Ealing. After a power shortage in the area, a building caught fire. It was then when, what was described as a "man shaped, footless creature" emerged from the flames, leaping, running, and screaming. One woman has told our reporters that the man had "teeth like a wolf, and the face of the devil". Police officers are still trying to get to the bottom of this; neither the power shortage nor the fire have still been explained. A spokesperson from Scotland Yard has stated that the "so called monster" might be a wounded person, escaping the fire.

TRAGEDY IN TOOLEY STREET
The police has found the bodies of three TFL workers in the construction site at Tooley Street. One of their colleagues raised the alarms last week, when the three workers didn't attend their shifts. The bodies of the men have been found in a deep hole, uncovered by the refurbishment works that are taking place in the area. According to the Police, the bodies were horribly mutilated, which has led to the wildest speculations. The names of the three workers are being kept anonymous, following the wishes of their families.

HOROSCOPE
MARCH 8 - PISCES
You are used to making sacrifices, to prioritising the happiness of others before yours. Even though that is a noble attitude, there are times in life where the only healthy alternative is to embrace your own selfishness and allow yourself some enjoyment. Reserve one hour per day to do something you really like. Treat yourself! Your colour for this month is blue.
Echoes from the past ring back into London. Their intensity increases until they are deafening. What once was a faded memory of a glorious time, now becomes a shocking reality. The consequences of actions taken decades ago ripple into the present, altering the lives of everybody in the City. Unguided and blind, Kindred wander around, trying to make profit out of the reigning chaos.

The appearance of four mysterious figures turned the city upside down. Mistrust and jealousy became the official currency of London. Serpents and fiends rise to power, misdirecting the blaming eyes of the Camarilla towards imaginary enemies. Only those with clear vision and the ability to trust each other strive, while the rest run towards a shallow grave.

"Why can't any of these streets be straight?"

Bobby Lucas was talking to himself, exasperated, while looking at his phone. Glancing yet again at George Henry Harris's email and then at the white sign above the wooden door, Lucas concluded that this must be the right pub.

He opened the door to a mostly-empty carpeted room with wooden tables. Lucas went up to the bar and asked for a glass of water. The bartender looked at him quizzically before handing him a pint of ice water. Although beer would no longer affect his physical condition, Lucas still did not see the point of drinking.

Lucas sat down at an empty table at the corner of the pub. He drank a sip of his glass of water, took off his black beret, and began spinning it. He was nervous; he needed to have the Primogen's support if he had any hope of surviving in London. Hopefully he could remain vague about his past. Returning to New York or even the States was not an option.

Well, here it is and Mr. Lucas should be around here somewhere... If Barney is right he should be sitting over there... Well, off to work...

Suddenly two more glasses were placed on the table, a pint glass of beer and a small glass with some kind of liquor in it. Accompanying the glasses in their occupation of the table was an older man dressed in all-black, looking at Bobby with a small smile and taking a sip of beer before speaking.

"Good evening, Mr. Lucas... I think, there were a few things we wanted to talk about, if I'm not mistaken... Would you mind, if I had a few questions ? If you have any you want to ask me, we could take turns, if you want..."

Lucas instinctively straightened up when the older man approached. He knew that this must be George Henry Harris, Primogen of Clan Brujah in London.

Focusing on not betraying his nervousness, Lucas smiled and said, "It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Harris. Taking turns sounds great."

Lucas paused, taking a moment to stare at both glasses. He thought to himself that he might need to start drinking if he wanted to fit into London.

"I would very much like to live in this city with your blessing and the blessing of the Prince. I was embraced a few years ago and lived in New York since then."

Lucas hesitated before getting to the difficult part. "The problem is that I don't have any of the usual references. My sire caused some problems in New York, and I was forced to leave quickly."

He began speaking quickly in order to explain himself. "I can promise that I won't cause the problems my sire caused. I attended a very prestigious university in the US before my embrace. I'm also very proficient at unarmed combat. I think I can be a real asset to our clan here."

Lucas took a breath and finished, "So my question is: What can I do to get you to support my residency here in London?"

Recently embraced, no references and his sire caused... problems back in New York... That could become a problem here... to him, us and the whole city... Well, at least he is lucky and gets a better prince to account to than Hamilton... Thank God for that...

George listened to Bobby's speech and his facial expression changed from the small smile to a strained worried grimace, before the parody of a grin faded.

"Well, Mr. Lucas, I might have something you could do for me, but there is a more pressing matter at hand, which might have an impact on your presentation..."

Pausing a moment to take a sip of beer, he looked at Bobby with a deeply worried expression before speaking on...

"You see, the problems your sire caused might be a problem... It's not a must, but I'd like to know the exact nature of it and the consequences... The Prince will ask for detail and if you tell me, I might be able to help you in determining whether these problems are ones here as well or not..."

Had Lucas's heart still beat, it would have stopped when Harris said, "I'd like to know the exact nature of it and the consequences."

He paused for a very long few minutes, watching the beaded condensation drip down Harris's glass. His mind raced. He desperately wanted to keep the circumstances under which he left New York secret. However, if he ended up at odds with the Prince. He could not survive in London for long. Lucas had been a middle class university student, and then was under his sire's care. He had never actually fended for himself.

Lucas then took a deep breath, despite the fact that he no longer used oxygen. He thought to himself, Focus. Let's think this through logically. In order to live here in London, I need the support of either the Prince or my Primogen. It looks like getting support means revealing my recent past to at least one of them. "Ventrue" is really just Vampire for "Republican", so the Prince likely isn't the one I should trust.

Lucas eyed the man dressed all in black again. I guess the least worse option is to trust this guy.

He began after the awkwardly long pause, "My sire retained significant connections to and continued to care deeply about the struggle for Black Rights in America. I did in my mortal life as well, which is why he embraced me. I'm not sure how much news you follow across the pond, but a man was released after gunning down an unarmed Black teenager in Florida. My sire, very unwisely, took it upon himself to try to blow up the courthouse where the murderer was found 'Not Guilty'. The authorities in New York and Florida foiled his plan and began a Blood Hunt against him for attempted breach of the Masquerade."

Sounding a bit defensive and worried, Lucas began to justify himself. "My sire told me to leave and go as far away as I could. I think he was right--I don't want to be associated with a Masquerade breaker."

"But you're not going to have to worry about me for two reasons: First, I think what my sire did was a terrible idea. Not only would bombing the courthouse not have helped the Civil Rights Movement, but I understand that now that we're dead, and we need to be Kindred first. I left 'African-American' behind the night I was embraced. I get that now."

"Second, when I left New York, I left the American Civil Rights movement behind as well. I understand that Britain has its own civil rights issues, but those are separate from the ones I cared deeply about in America."

He paused again, but this time, he looked Harris right in the eyes. "So what should I do?"

Tough question... He might not like it, but there are indeed some problems and that's why we can't keep the sire thing secret... Won't like it, but it has to be done...

George took a sip of rum, while he thought about the things they could do... Silence crept into the room and became almost physical before the silence was broken with a sigh.

"Your situation is tough, but not hopeless, Mr. Lucas... I assume you don't like to tell other people the tale of what happened to your sire, but I'm afraid you'd have to tell the prince as well, as honesty is better than lying and have him find out later. Especially without letters of recommendation and a Nos as seneschal, lying would be a bad idea..."

After another sip of rum a smile started to form again.

"Don't worry, the prince might be a blue-blood but he is better than the one before him. Besides you have me at your side during presentation and I'll do everything in my power for a good outcome for you... Which brings me to another question: Do you know the traditions and rules of our kind ?"

Lucas sat frozen with fear as he waited for Harris to speak. His mind raced, and by the time Harris finally responded, Lucas was sure that he was going to have to leave London.

When Harris said, "Besides you have me at your side during presentation and I'll do everything in my power for a good outcome for you," Lucas released his breath. He did not relish the thought of telling more people about the circumstances under which he left New York, but at least Harris seemed to support his residency. Lucas believed that his gamble in being frank with Harris might just have paid off.

Lucas was visibly more relaxed when Harris finished speaking. "Thank you Mr. Harris. I really appreciate your support. You're right that I want as few Kindred as possible knowing about my circumstances. I don't want to be held accountable for my sire's crimes. But I trust you that we have to tell the Prince."

Lucas's tone became more pedantic. "As for the traditions, while my sire and I were not heavily involved in Kindred politics, I learned about the rules I must follow as a member of the Camarilla. Don't reveal our existence to mortals. Obey the Prince. Don't sire more Kindred without the Prince's consent. Take responsibility for those you do sire. Present yourself when travelling. And don't kill other Kindred."

After his recitation, Lucas sounded calmer. "Is there anything I should know in general about the state of our clan in London?"

"Well, Mr. Lucas, I'll get you an appointment as soon as I can. It might be possible though, that you could become subject to a test, if the prince does see that part about your sire a bit more critical than I do... But don't worry, you surely wouldn't put in a suicide mission and besides I'm there to help..."

As Bobby asked about the political situation, George thought for a while before responding.

"At the moment we are one of the lesser political powers but I'm thinking on changing that and organising a meeting for the clan, the whole clan... As you might know, Grove Ward is our domain... I wouldn't advise you to roam in the East, that's Sabbat country and the Anarchs in the North have been friendlier as well..."

Lucas felt very satisfied about his meeting. Even considering that he hadn't been able to keep his sire's actions a secret, he believed that the meeting had turned out better than he could have reasonable hoped.

His face lit up with a smile. "I'd love to come to the clan-wide meeting and do whatever I can to help. I don't like to get involved in Kindred politics, but as I've learned the hard way, Kindred politics will still find me. I know I'm much safer off with a strong Clan Brujah, and I'll do what I can to help."

Lucas leaned in a bit and his voice dropped. "I completely understand if you don't want to discuss this now, but I have a question about one thing you said. You said that this prince is better than the one before him. I'm new to London and even pretty new to the Kindred. What happened before this prince?"

Lucas quickly added, "Again, I don't mean to overstep any bounds and am happy to drop the subject if that would be better."

"I'm very glad to hear that, Mr. Lucas. I think the time for action might be nearer than you think and I'm sure you will be able to be helpful... But we'll get to that later..."

Smiling he took another sip of beer before continuing.

"The prince before Mr. Blücher... What can I say ? I could say he was a joke, an arrogant, not-very-competent fool, a failure... You see, a prince, who disregards the council and wants to decide everything, really everything on his own and has plans that make no sense whatsoever is no good prince... Especially when he is weak and acts like a strong prince... He only got elected because his competitor was worse... We recently released him from office because he started micro-managing and getting involved in clan-business..."

Lowering his voice he leaned closer and whispered.

"I wouldn't mention that to him or any Ventrue though... They might take offense to that, you know how they are..."

Lucas chuckled at Harris's comment about the Ventrue. "Don't worry, I won't."

Stretching, he said, "You've answered all of my questions for now. Thanks for the information. Is there anything else you'd like to know about me?"

George allowed himself a small smile as he answered the question.

"Well, there is something I'd like to know, Mr. Lucas... For example, the exact extent of your abilities and where you learned them... It might enable me to give you a post appropriate to them when the action starts..."

Like his still-living classmates, Lucas found himself interviewing in this crappy economy. He had hoped undeath would have at least allowed him to avoid this experience. He remained polite, his face and tone showing nothing but gratitude and deference.

Like the Kine his age, Lucas had very little in the way of qualifications. He had been embraced only 3 years ago. Before that, he was a 20-year-old college student. He knew he had to prove his value to Harris in order to secure his support, so he did what every other jobless young American was doing: he inflated his credentials as much as possible.

"I was tutored by my sire for three years. During that time, I became proficient - at least for a young vampire - on all of our disciplines. While my sire didn't follow Camarilla law, he taught it to me. I am ready and able to be a responsible Brujah neonate."

Lucas began to sound a bit rehearsed. "Before my embrace, I attended Columbia University, one of the best universities in the US. There, I majored in [BLANK]. Even after my embrace, I continue to learn more. Knowing that I may live many lifetimes has only intensified my desire to learn. Additionally, I trained in a martial art, kenpo, since I was 10. I rose to the level of black belt before going to Columbia. I continue to train, and while I would not like to fight, I am very proficient at unarmed combat, at least for a mortal or young vampire. Finally, I am well connected to leftist organizations and groups in the US, and some of those connections extend here too. I plan to expand on those, and I am working particularly hard on getting organized labor contacts."

Lucas thought he had hit all of the right notes and awaited Harris's response.

Hm, a leftist... and a more pacifistic one to boot... I could put him on the team for the security business... As long as he doesn't try to force-feed everyone his ideology, it might be a good idea... Perhaps he might still get on the mission...

George listened to the resume he was given, then smiled at Bobby.

"I might have a job for you, Mr. Lucas... Do you think you could teach your kenpo skills to others ? I might have already told you that we, as clan, formed a small security company to help us keep our streets safe... The people working there could use the training, only if you're willing, of course... But there could be another thing I have in mind..."

Making a short dramatic pause he took a sip of rum before speaking to Bobby again.

"What is your opinion on the people calling themselves 'Sabbat', Mr. Lucas ?"
