The Kindred Chronicle
Key Figures
THE MONSTER OF EALING
Last night, several people reported the sighting of a "screaming red monster" in a quiet neighbourhood of Ealing. After a power shortage in the area, a building caught fire. It was then when, what was described as a "man shaped, footless creature" emerged from the flames, leaping, running, and screaming. One woman has told our reporters that the man had "teeth like a wolf, and the face of the devil". Police officers are still trying to get to the bottom of this; neither the power shortage nor the fire have still been explained. A spokesperson from Scotland Yard has stated that the "so called monster" might be a wounded person, escaping the fire.

TRAGEDY IN TOOLEY STREET
The police has found the bodies of three TFL workers in the construction site at Tooley Street. One of their colleagues raised the alarms last week, when the three workers didn't attend their shifts. The bodies of the men have been found in a deep hole, uncovered by the refurbishment works that are taking place in the area. According to the Police, the bodies were horribly mutilated, which has led to the wildest speculations. The names of the three workers are being kept anonymous, following the wishes of their families.

HOROSCOPE
MARCH 8 - PISCES
You are used to making sacrifices, to prioritising the happiness of others before yours. Even though that is a noble attitude, there are times in life where the only healthy alternative is to embrace your own selfishness and allow yourself some enjoyment. Reserve one hour per day to do something you really like. Treat yourself! Your colour for this month is blue.
Echoes from the past ring back into London. Their intensity increases until they are deafening. What once was a faded memory of a glorious time, now becomes a shocking reality. The consequences of actions taken decades ago ripple into the present, altering the lives of everybody in the City. Unguided and blind, Kindred wander around, trying to make profit out of the reigning chaos.

The appearance of four mysterious figures turned the city upside down. Mistrust and jealousy became the official currency of London. Serpents and fiends rise to power, misdirecting the blaming eyes of the Camarilla towards imaginary enemies. Only those with clear vision and the ability to trust each other strive, while the rest run towards a shallow grave.

Rosewood Manor. This was the place where the group had been invited to at 3 hours after sundown via a letter written in Round Hand calligraphy and black ink thrown into the letterboxes... So there they were standing in front of a big Baroque-style mansion having gotten through the ornate iron fence and past the guard house on the outside. As they arrived at the door, a large wooden door with iron fittings flanked by two rows of pillars carrying a small ornate balcony shielding the door from sun and rain. After a while the portal was opened by a black man in a butlers suit, gesturing them with a deep bow to enter.

Inside they were confronted with big rooms with high ceilings and large windows, marble floors, copies of famous paintings and large gobelins on the walls, big marble statues standing in corners and near the staircases and colourful frescos on the ceilings. As they shut the door, the butler adressed them.

"If the gentlemen and ladies would please follow me to the Waiting Room ? It might take a while for the Lady of the Manor to be ready to greet you. If you wish, I can have refreshments brought while you wait..."

As Lau asked her if she happened to be the employer, Winnie looked at him as if to question his sanity, then she started laughing. After a while, she got able to talk and shook her head while talking.

"I'm not, Sir. I wasn't supposed to be your guide either, but Mr. Fortunat Sir got a distress call and thus Mr. Demetrios Sir sent me as replacement. You see, I'm not too keen on that guiding job, but I'm under orders not to leave your side until you pass the front gate again... Terribly sorry about that, but orders are orders, Sir..."

All the while they were led deeper through seemingly endless corridors, all looking the same except for some numerals on the doors. After an eternity which really comprised about half an hour, if someone bothered to have a look at a watch, they reached an exit control lock staffed by a pair of guards in black uniforms. Passing the lock they came to an elevator which Winnie unlocked with a key card and then they went down a story. Then Winnie led them to a seemingly wooden door which opened to show them a sort of meeting room.

The room had red silk wallpapers and there was a large round ornate table completely with matching chairs and little cards indicating who sat where labelled 'Mr. Lau', 'Mr. Lockhart', 'Ms. Campling' and 'Ms. Maddox'. On the other side of the table two persons were sitting: A black-haired woman about thirty in a black dress with a tad too much make-up, silver jewellery and ringlets behind a card labelled 'Lady Victoria' and on her right sat a rather small bald man in his seventies wearing a white suit with a purple tie and sporting a long grey beard in a Dutch braid. His card just read 'Demetrios'.

As the group entered the room the woman smiled at them and gestured them to sit, before speaking to them.

"So you are willing to do me a little...favour... The task Is the following: I want you to obtain a necklace pendant made of black ivory resembling a scarab, the matching earrings and the woman possessing them, Fiona McMorran, and delivering them to the pawnshop 'Lorimer & Sons'... If you do that.you'll be paid handsomely... Questions ?"

Lau watched her until she was done, utterly still, hardly even breathing. No. She would not annoy him. For whatever reason, he would not let himself be rattled.

To calm himself, he indulged in a brief image of ripping Winnie's head off and rolling it over the floor like a bowling ball. It helped. Some.

He just ignored Winnie and the other three with him from then on. If they tossed comments at his direction he did not acknowledge them.

For half an hour or so, he followed after Winnie towards the meeting room. All in all, an hour's worth of walk. Lovely. It gave him time to think.

Why the walk ? Why the tunnels ? What kind of a distress call did Hound get ? Was Winnie lying ?

At long last they came to the meeting place. He took the chair with his name, and made himself comfortable while listening the Lady Victoria.

He glanced to confirm that Winnie was still there, then turned back. " Details ?" He asked.

They had the name of the woman, Fiona McMorran. Now they needed details of her residence, her security, her habits, and so on. Was she alone, or a part of a family ? Was she a mortal or something else ? Was she aware of the world of darkness, or vanilla-mortal ? Victoria and Demetrios surely had some info on her already.

Lacy had decided this show was staged for their benefit. This person who ever they were, were trying to get them to react. This entire thing so far was clearly to disarm them. For what reason she wasn't sure. But, Lacy was sure to note the path they took, as best she could anyway. Should it come in handy in the near future.

When they had finally reached their destination, she obsereved both the woman speaking and her companion. She wasn't entirely sure the woman was representing herself. If she wasn't some one had put in enough investment to get a mouth piece and those didn't always come cheap.

Then names where given. It was not any one who Lacy had, had ant dealings with. But, that didn't mean a whole lot. She made a note to do dome research when she left. She knew better than to trust just one side of the story. Of course the amulet, Now, that she refused to believe was so simple.

Ronnie kept looking at his watch. Wasnīt it already over an hour ago that they had arrived at the house? Damn, they had built half a city down here...must have cost a fortune.
What was the point of all this, leading them into this underground corridors - to intimidate them?
An elevator. Going downwards even more.
All of this very much reminded him of the film and game Resident Evil, where they had a so called hive underground, many many rooms and corridors, in many levels, maybe as high as a skyscraper if it was above the ground. For secret experiments, all below a villa.

Finally they arrived, and finally they could start talking about business.
What a show. More bloody guards.
Ronnie sat down there where the card indicated that it was his place. He looked at that Mr. Demetrios and then at Lady Victoria who started speaking.

Ronnie wasnīt sure if he got this right. Did the woman say they should get the necklace, earings and also that Ms. McMorran? He was confused. Were they really supposed to kidnap that woman, or was his English simply too bad to understand this?
Damn. Hunting down troublemakers for the Sheriff, that was all right. But kidnapping innocent people, that was a completely different matter. Ronnie didnīt feel comfortable about that at all.
Hopefully he just misunderstood this.
He didnīt want to make a fool of himself, so he better remained silent for now.
If they got more details, then surely it would turn out if this was supposed to be a kidnapping or not.

It was a bit difficult to just walk out if you didnīt like to take part in this task any more. Because the way back was so long.
What would happen if they said weīre not doing this?
Would those people get really nasty then? Maybe thatīs why they led them here - to ensure that theyīre not gonna say no. There must be some reason for all that fuss.

They were going so much farther underground, and.. Oh, goodie, they already knew her name. Just wonderful, she loved it when people she didn't know seemed to already be aware of her existence. Except that she didn't. It's not like she wore a fucking name tag, and there was a good reason for that. Aside from the fact that they were in the core of the goddamn earth right now, these people had intelligence on her that she didn't know about. Expression of displeasure deepening subtly, she sat where she was assigned, eyes running over the others in their chairs. She looked over each of their faces, hoping to surmise a detail or two more from their expressions, though kindred were quite talented at playing poker face.

Fiona McMorran, huh? They were going after some jewelry, and taking it to a pawn shop? She felt as though she'd heard of that place. Perhaps she'd frequented that pawn shop in particular when she made her living of picking the locks on rich people's doors and stealing every valuable thing she could fit in her pockets. Of course, the promise of being 'paid handsomely' didn't exactly bother her, not one little bit. She could handle getting her hands on a set of earrings and a scarab necklace if this place was any indicator of the amount of money their employers were willing to pay. She was curious to know what was so special about this set of jewelry, but of course, there was a pretty strict 'don't ask' policy when it came to things like this. Instead, she kept her eyes on Lady Victoria while she spoke, wondering whether she was a partner or an employee of Mr. Demetrios Sir and Mr. Fortunat Sir. Huh, fancy that. Fortunat, Fortunado. Maybe Poe was a good choice for the comparison of this journey underground.

When Lau looked over his shoulder Winnie and her always present smile were right where they had been once they had entered. Once he asked for details they could briefly see Lady Victoria looking to Demetrios as if to ask if she should start and the answer was an almost unnoticeable nod.

Shuffling a bit in her chair she started speaking, her gaze wandering over the group from one to the other.

"Well, we know that she lives in Brixton Road Estates, works at a lawyers' office about three blocks from there and likes to spend her evenings and weekend nights in the Black Lily, which is a Gothic club in Brixton... She tends to work from 7 to 3 and then spend her time in the club from 6 to 9. We assume..."

At that point Demetrios interrupted her with a short glance, which silenced her immediately then cleared his throat and started speaking in a deep raspy voice and an accent which resembled a Greek one, if one of the group ever heard one.

"No assumptions here ! Since we're only exchanging secure knowledge, I think I should take over, if you don't mind... Furthermore we know that our target is informed about the rules, abilities, ad- and disadvantages of our kind... Also you aren't the only competitors for her, there is another party we know of and..."

Just as he spoke, a mobile phone broke the silence. Frowning, Victoria took her phone out, looked at it and passed it to Demetrios, who glanced at it and then continued speaking.

"Two. Two parties we know of... Also this makes it necessary to cut the deadline on the job to three days... Furthermore it is of great importance to get both Ms. McMorran and the jewellery to the target location in one and five pieces respectably... Ms. McMorran must be able to walk there on her own legs and be as unharmed as possible, messing with her memory does count as harm for our purpose... Any more questions ?"

Lacy took in the information, the fact there were other people after both the woman and the jewelry changed things slightly. More so as she had no information on who or these other parties might contain. Then again no one in this room might know that, just because they knew there was other people involved did not mean they knew their life stories.

Still, it did mean this thing, whatever it was, was important enough to attract attention. She was sure those other people might not have the rules of play nice when it came to the woman and whatever it was she had possession of. "No, however, shall I assume these..other people won't be greeting us with hugs and kisses?" She thought that went with out saying, but, a confirmation would be useful.

She also was curious as to why Fiona must be kept unharmed, but pushed that to the side for now. It would not do to ask to many questions, and at the moment it was not the most pressing concern.

Lau took that in. 'of our kind' Demetrios had said. Of course. Why shouldn't there be Elders involved in this. He was willing to wager that Demetrios had been some ancient Greek despot or something, back in the day. Still, a job was a job.

He watched the phone pass around, and waited until their Employer was done talking.

" Info on our competition ?" He asked simply. Simple and professional.

Inside though, he was uncomfortable. Competition would make this tricky. It also meant that there was a lot more to this than met the eye. Why was this whole thing so tremendously important that there were now three parties, probably all supernatural, after the same thing ?

And the woman was aware of the supernatural world. Was she also aware of the importance of her jewelry ?

He asked as much.

" Is she aware of the importance of her and her jewels, or does she views them as trinkets ?"

So Ronnie hadnīt misunderstood it. It was a kidnapping. Hell. He didnīt like that.
He wondered if that woman was a ghoul. What other people knew that vampires existed? Hunters. And it didnīt sound as if she was one.

The other participants might not like it that there were two more parties interested to get that woman and her jewellery. But to Ronnie it gave some justification to take part in this whole thing. If the other parties got her first they might kill her in the end.
But if this group here got her first then she would be safe. Maybe. Or so he hoped.
At least until that Demetrios or whoever got the information from her that they wanted.
Ronnie was supposing that this must be the reason they wanted her, too, and not only the jewellery. She must know something they wanted to know. Why bother kidnapping her otherwise.

Too many assumptions as to what was the ultimate goal of their employers was.
But they surely wouldnīt blurt that out, so it was no point asking.
At least Ronnie really would like to know what they would do to that woman after they got from her what they wanted. But that wasnīt his business really, was it.

Creepy bastards were pretty serious about this lady and her jewelry. Keeping tabs on a lady like that, putting that much time into knowing where she was at what time on any given night, was real dedication--even if they weren't doing it themselves, which she highly doubted they were. The money and resources that went into hiring scouts was nothing laughable, she imagined, but their employers probably had enough money never to care about the expenses again. Which made her wonder.. To people who could afford anything they wanted, why couldn't they just buy this lady's jewelry? The scarab pieces must have had a value beyond that of bills.

No assumptions--that was about right. Especially with a second party of God knows who fighting for the same paycheck, with a ridiculously short timeline. Between the four of them, though, surely something could be accomplished; Aguirre wasn't the best fighter or anything, but she was pretty decent at making people trust her--even when she wasn't trying. If nothing else, maybe she could put this tactic to use.

One could obviously assume that, if there were parties searching after these ancient heirlooms aside from theirs, Miss Fiona certainly knew their worth--at least enough to fend whoever was trying to steal them off her. That was assuming they'd been in her possession for a while; if they hadn't, perhaps they'd just been planted on her to see what bait could be caught. Boy, the possibility of being trapped was just spectacular. Oh well. Black Lily sounded cool; she identified pretty well with the goth crowd around the late eighties, early nineties--even if some of the kine among them were more twisted that a lot of the undead she knew today.

"Lady's gotta know what's she's wearin', even if only vaguely. Although if she's wearin' these bits out in public, she could just be a fishin' lore," Aguirre addressed Lau's question quietly, more as a cautionary suggestion than a correction.

Demetrios looked at them, seemingly thinking about something, then shifting the glance to Winnie, telling her something in rapid-fire Chinese, an order to get someone, the captain of the guard, if anyone understood Chinese. Then he turned his attention back to the group, first to Lacy while Winnie rose, bowed deeply and left the room.

"No, they won't greet you with hugs and kisses... At least not the first competition party, the second might shower you ladies with them and add a bit of chloroform to use you in their rites... But more about that in a bit..."

Turning to Lau, he thought again, then at some papers before speaking on.

"The first group is what you are, mercenaries for an interested party, our counterpart, if you wish to see it that way... Their boss is the nemesis of mine, that's about all I'm allowed to say on that matter... The second group, however, is a bit more controversial, as it isn't clear if they are the old ones or the young ones... The young ones are basically vampire satanists, delivering sacrifices to demons and worshipping them... The old ones are... different, as they tend to avoid such obvious things... We don't know which ones are after Ms. McMorran, but beware... We don't quite know what they're capable of... but they're not harmless"

Watching their reaction, he looked at Aguirre now with a small nod. Apparently he seemed to appreciate her thinking.

"We have been taking that possibility into account, Ms. Maddox, but it isn't very likely that she is a fishing lore... She knows about the value of the jewellery, though and we're almost certain her importance is known to her as well... She has been prepared for Embrace some years ago, after all... Any more question ?"

Lau placed his elbows on the table, resting his lips and chin on his steepled fingers. He nodded considering, staying silent for a time, letting it stretch.

" Only two more things. " He spoke finally. " First, I'd like pictures of the jewelry. Or at least scetches and accurate descriptions. Second, what is her heart's deepest desire ?"

Probably to be a vampire. But he wanted to hear the answer.

He watched Demetrios. Demetrios had used the word 'Vampire'. He did not say 'Kindred', he said 'Vampire'. That was interesting.

"Always with the demons." Lacy muttered. Which was true enough, it seemed like sooner or later anything with any sort of backstory about it developed a connection with a cult sooner or later. Half of those tried to raise a dark lord or two. Fortunately for the world in general most of those cults were ultimately goths who thought that they had some idea of what they were doing. Most of the time the did not.

In this case, it sounded like they were dealing with the smaller portion, the actual demotic cults, cult. She half arched an eye brow and mentally pondered over which demon they were cultic about. There were a great number of demons and she didn't have enough information to even guess which one this cult might have. But, the fact they were involved, was enough for her to file that into the might need to know later file of her mind.

Vampire satanists who were worshipping demons? Didnīt sound too good really.
But Ronnieīs concern was still another one, and he had to speak it out finally.

"I didnīt know beforehand this is supposed to be a kidnapping.
So what if I donīt want to do such a thing? Will you then ruin my reputation or something like that?"

Or wonīt let him out of here?

"I thought this is just about stealing jewellery.
And if you get Ms. McMorran unharmed, will she stay unharmed and be able to live a normal life again afterwards? Not my business really, but only if I know that I can decide if I really want to get involved in this. I donīt really want to assist in something that leads to murder of that woman."

But even if they promised they wonīt kill her, could he rely on that?
Such a promise might not mean a thing. How could he be sure, of course he couldnīt.

Well, shit, at least it was abundantly clear that whomever this woman they were facing was clearly an idiot. If she knew the value of the jewelry and still chose to publicly flaunt it, their target wasn't particularly bright. The only real challenge at this point was.. well, trying not to die at the hands of the other teams that were looking to rip those pretty little beetles right from her earlobes, unless Miss McMorran only chose to show off her gaudy middle eastern jewelry because she was well aware of how to use whatever strange properties the earrings had. This would be pretty handy knowledge, if these old kooks were at all willing to actually share what was so special about the damn things. That was important information that these people seemed pretty tight-lipped about, the kind of information that had the potential to get them all killed. She would have preferred to avoid that as much as possible--because she didn't intend to spend her last moments becoming a pile of ash on some goth club dance floor.

The Brujah was slightly less pleased at the fact that their target was also the live bait wearing the earrings. Just what the fuck were these old dusty bastards playing at, anyway? Was this some plot to get their employees turned to dust? She didn't quite like the stench this situation gave off, and for fucks sake with the stupid questions.. Her arms crossed nonchalantly over her abdomen as she leaned back in her chair, obviously chewing over something--like the possibility of how much information their paychecks were neglecting to mention.

Lacy sat in her chair and listened to the question around her. He might be concerned about kidnapping she was more concerned about who was interesting in demon summoning. She was curious about just who the demon in question was. If she could find that out she would have a better idea of just what they might be dealing with, to a point.

Very few people had contact with major demons, so to speak, despite what Hollywood might have a person believe. They tended to have well, demonic minions to do their dirty work, if they were working with a well known demon lord they might pose a problem, on the other hand if they were research on it would be relatively easy to find.

"Murder if your lucky." She muttered. Keeping an eye on her hosts as best she could.

Demetrios listened to the questions with a small amused smile then looked at Victoria, throwing a gesture at her that made her start scribbling on a piece of paper. Still looking amused he turned his attention to Lau, allowing himself a short fit of unsettingly glum laughter.

"Her hearts deepest desire ? You think she has that tattooed on her forehead or something ? I'll tell you something... Wedon't know it and I'm quite certain they don't know it as well... Not allowed to get her ourselves, you know ? Overlords' orders... In fact I'm not even sure she could tell you, if you asked her... The deepest desire is not easily worded or understood, even by the one harbouring it...As you might see, or not sketches and description are being worked on..."

As he turned to Lacy, his telephone rang. He looked at it and the glum amusement faded for a split-second, then he had himself under control again.

"Yes, the demons... Be assured that it is a rather small cult and they wouldn't be foolish enough to dare summoning anything but a minor demon... They shouldn't be anything you couldn't handle, if violence was necessary... If they don't get Ms. McMorran, they are not your priority, as they're taken care of... Two... experts were sent by a third party to dispose of the younglings, apparently the older ones aren't here..."

With that he turned to Ronnie, answering his question.

"She'll be free and unharmed, Mr. Lockhart... except for the loss of her jewellery, but I think that is a rather small price, isn't it ? After all we're ordered not to hurt her, personal order of my lord... You may assume that you are the 'good people' doing a good deed, if you want..."

Looking at Aguirre with a smile, he took the sketches and put them at the table so that everyone could see them. Then he took a picture of two men and put it next to the sketches.

"In fact, we'd not be amused, if the jewellery mysteriously 'disappeared' and happened to be rediscovered in a chantry or on the black market... It is dangerous, you know ? The kind of thing you don't want to play with... There has been a lot of blood spilled over the pieces and it is said to bring great power, but also a curse... But I'll get to that in a bit, if you don't mind..."

The photo showed two men, an unusually pale young man with long black hair tied back in a pony tail, barely 20 but almost 7 feet tall and looking like a bodybuilder, dressed in a black jumpsuit and wearing a black baseball cap. The other one was 4' 6 tall with grey hair with a few brown strands in it and a walrus moustache, massive like a bull who somehow stopped growing in his youth, about 50 and wearing a cheap-looking red suit, mirrored sunglasses, a brown leather trenchcoat and a flat cap. Pointing at the picture, Demetrios explained who they were.

"Those are the two experts I mentioned... The smaller is the brain of the team, Mr. Löw and the other one is the muscle, Mr. Brunner... I'd ask you to stay clear of them or at least don't pick an unnecessary fight with them, as they might be another party interested in Ms. McMorran..."

Lacy kept an impassive expression surely the chantry quip was directed towards her. Not that the thought hadn't already crossed her mind. Of course that clearly wasn't going to work at least not for the moment. So, she couldn't exactly get her hands on the piece, getting information on it was a second. So she simply steepled her fingers and listened.

She peered at the sketches. "Near eastern in style, I take it. Scarab would lead us to think that was the case. Kabalaic perhaps." The tree vaguely reminded her of the tree of life. In which case it would be blended, although that would not be unheard of. She was musing upon its possible origins when the photos where laid in front of them.

They seemed to be typical hired muscle, although she would assume their names placed them in a country with a Germanic language or a Scandinavian one. Always a good thing to knew when trying to pin point the origin of the piece to begin with.
Holy places are dark places. It is life and strength, not knowledge and words,
that we get in them. Holy wisdom is not clear and thin like water, but thick and
dark like blood.

Lau looked at the pictures, then at the others. Finally, he looked back at their hosts and nodded. " I'm in. "

The woman wasnīt gonna get harmed by their employers? All right then.
Ronnie didnīt really understand that stuff about the demons, he didnīt have any clue about anything like that. But as long as they only had to deal with some young demon worshippers...
He looked at the photo.
Brunner and Löw...a pair of muscle curiosities, at least easy to recognise.
Scarab? Kabalaic? Ronnie didnīt have a clue about that either. So what, he didnīt really care what sort of jewellery that was, and he certainly wasnīt interested in keeping the stuff himself to sell it to somebody else.

"Iīm in, too", Ronnie said.
