Those small differences are represented in the Clan Curses. Each clan, after all, has a singular curse. Ventrue - Exclusive Feeding Brujah - Increased Frenzy Malkavians - Madness etc etc |

Surely there could be other small differences? Something between instant puking and the eat food merit? For example? Say... for some reason my vampire can keep something down for an hour or so... painfully, perhaps, then vomits... Perfect example. In the witch's gambit part II thread, Paddy makes Anne eat a peach. He posts that he expects her to keep it down until later on after her ritual.... if things are too strictly enforced, small deviations could really interfere with a story Edited by Margo Moreau, Friday, 29. That's the whole point of having to take the Merit. If you want that ability, you have to take it as a merit and earn it. |

The rules are so subjective, I don't see such strict interpretations as being helpful to the storytelling genre. in fact White Wolf agrees: The Golden Rule : For STs and Player Knowledge This is the most important rule of all, and the only real rule worth following: There are no rules. This game should be whatever you want it to be, whether that's a nearly diceless chronicle of in-character socialization or a long-running tactical campaign with each player controlling a small coterie of vampires. If the rules in this book interfere with your enjoyment of the game, change them. The world is far too big - it can't be reflected accurately in any set of inflexible rules. Think of this book as a collection of guidelines, suggested but not mandatory ways of capturing the World of Darkness in the format of a game. You're the arbiter of what works best in your game, and you're free to use, alter, abuse or ignore these rules at your leisure. On Rolls: We reiterate that the systems are suggestions for how we think situations can be best handled. If, in your chronicles, you come up with a way you like better, by all means use it. Also - particularly when dealing with social actions like seductions and speeches - the dice should never get in the way of roleplaying. If a player has his character make a particularly inspired (or painful) speech, deliver a particularly smooth (or cheesy) opening line, or come up with a brilliant (or laughable) alibi, feel free to let the character succeed (or fail) automatically, regardless of what the dice and Traits say. On the Books: The book is divided into several chapters, each of which is designed to explore and explain a specific area of the game. Remember, though, that in a storytelling game, the most important "chapter" is your imagination. Never let anything in this book be a substitute for your own creativity. The Main Idea: Whenever rules and story conflict, the story wins. Use the rules only as much - or preferably as little - as you need to tell thrilling stories of terror, action and romance. You -can- keep something down without the merit if you expend wp to do so I believe. Not all that long, but for a little while. |

And while I am on this soapbox... from our own Mael is this quote: PLEASE NOTE: Do not put points or stats on your character sheet. This forum is not the typical pen and paper rules, it is more for creative writing in the setting of Vampire The Masquerade. Please simply fill out the fields listed here. If you list futher fields your character will be declined It would seem obvious, that this is not the board for rules-lawyers. And the rules-lawyers should respect that. |

I'm hardly a rules lawyer, I honestly just wanted to back up the fact that you can force something to stay down a little while. And while there's no use of actual points on this forum, you can use it as a grounds for rp to say a char is stubborn or willful enough to do it. Because while the system of points and stats aren't directly in use, the game is still founded on VtM mechanics, right? So it's just a matter of incorporating it as rp.

I like Orissa's post quite a bit. Beast I've always seen it played that the Beast is very much like a separate, spiritual entity inside of you. I think the reasoning behind that is based on the fact that high level Gangrel powers in the tabletop books can actually remove it. Like Machine, I assumed it was the essential expression of the curse god laid on Cain--a demon inside of a corpse that longs for blood. A monstrous, separate entity. That being said, I kind of like Alarik's Beast-as-a-metaphor-for-instincts idea. It's a bit more elegant. Toran's conclusion seems a good compromise between the two interpretations. On bloody gums and bloodshot eyes Maybe vampire bodies co-opt glands and whatever makes spinal fluid to transform blood into the liquid necessary to run all of the many parts that need fluid? That would explain why saliva and vaginal lubricant still work for their intended functions, but are red because their base is blood, not water? Eating While I do agree that it's to the benefit of this storytelling environment to be loose with the rules, I also think it's important to have agreed upon conventions, so that when you defy the conventions you at least know you're doing that. And I feel like not being able to eat or derive pleasure from food is a BIG thing about being a vampire that should have a standard across clans, not to make deviation impossible, but to make sure that when it happens, people know to go: "Whoa. That was kind of weird." Creating consistency. It's somehow much more depressing to me not to be able to make breakfast for a loved one, or participate in a proper thanksgiving meal, than it is to have a Beast and lose sex. Food is such an important and fun part of everyday life. Not being able to share a meal with other people anymore, unless you're hunkered over a corpse together, I think that's a big part of why so many vampires go south so quickly. I'd say Lucy's willpower-to-choke-a-peach-slice-down can manage the edge cases and make sure this doesn't interfere with game play, but I think a vampire's inability to eat food without instantly vomiting is an important standard that creates more interesting RP opportunities than it denies us. Maintaining the Masquerade is hard! |

For clarification, most of our rules are house rules, or follow the books as closely as possible without having to roll dice. I like that we have some logic involved in the physiology of kindred now, It helps me quite a bit in game personally--but I must stress the same point I find myself repeating over and over again recently, and that is that we don't use a merit/flaw system, and that as both a house and official rule, kindred are not actually able to keep food or foreign liquid down. On that same note, unbondable is not allowed on our forums. Edited by Aguirre Efrain Maddox, Friday, 29. November 2013, 18:44.

Where are these rules located, can you link them? The only house rules I have ever found listed were those for Disciplines. (I have been informed since posting this that the house rules were discussed in chat, but have not yet been documented). Unbondable was on my app and was approved. Edited by Margo Moreau, Friday, 29.
