| Welcome To The Night You find yourself in London on a dreary, foggy night like any other. But what lurks in the shadows is the stuff of fantasies and nightmares, far from mortal reality. This game uses the cursed and immortal vampiric condition as a backdrop to explore themes of morality, depravity, the human condition, salvation, and personal horror. We are a writing and roleplaying community dedicated to telling complex and engaging stories. Your fate is your own. Mingle among the ivory-tower elite in the Camarilla, join the fight of the discontented and chaotic Anarch rabble, or set out independently and attempt to survive in London's nighttime underworld. When I post a character's internal dialogue, these are the characters thoughts, feelings, assumptions about the situation that she may be in. They are never a commentary on a player, a player's writing or role-playing. They often also represent my understanding, assumptions or guesses about what may be going on in our little subjective world. As such, I can guess wrong. When my character's internal dialogue does not mesh with another character's understanding of what is occurring it is never an attempt to 'control' another character. Again, I might be simply wrong about what is happening, or I may have misread or misunderstood something another player has posted. When this occurs PLEASE correct me, so that I can edit my post. Along these lines, a recognition that my posts might also be misinterpreted should be considered. I may have written something that was clear in my head as far as intent or description, but that is actually conveying something I did not intend due to phrasing, or simply having a good old fashioned brain-fart. In a similar vein, we are dealing with a subjective interpretation of VTM rules and genre. My interpretation may differ from another players. When this occurs, a recognition of the fact that we are dealing with a subjective interpretation can be helpful. No single person's interpretation is inviolate (except a Mod's of course). A discussion can ensue to reach a common understanding or a Mod can be called to mediate. This need not be an adversarial circumstance, in fact, I would sincerely hope it would not be. To cite one example of the above, consider the fight with the alligator in the Sewer Rose. In my post, I assumed that Margo's dread gaze would slow down the gator and take some of the fight out of it, meanwhile with the speed granted by celerity she could get around behind the beast and attack it. With Margo's average strength, her blade was repelled by the gator's hide, so she switched to fangs which are far nastier then a mundane blade, in my understanding of the rules. My assumption therefore was that vampire fangs could bite through a non-ghoul gator pretty easily, which would then produce the tranquilizing effect of The Kiss. Fight over. Now. Sawyer's post. In her interpretation of the rules, which I can only guess at from her post I get the following sense: Sawyer expected the gator to put up more of a fight, and be able to get a chomp out of little Margo. He also seemed to expect that vampire fangs could not, in fact, easily get through a gator hide. (I should note in here somewhere that when we were scripting out this encounter we thought wrestling the alligator would be much more fun then Margo shooting it, which is why I had her fall and get her gun full of shit so it would not work). So, how to handle this? I sent an email asking Sawyer if he was happy with how the fight went, and from my recollection there was no objection. That said, hypothetically Sawyer could have stated his view (if he had such) that Margo should have had a harder time of it. Or that he wanted to post out more of the fight. In this case, I would have happily obliged. After all, what's a gator bite between friends. Now, another hypothetical situation. Obviously I thought Margo could defeat the gator using her disciplines as she did. Now, suppose in this hypothetical situation Sawyer disagreed and I was not in fact willing to compromise. Solution? Mod. No reason for anyone to be butt-hurt, just a differing understanding of what a kindred and a sewer gator can do. We get a ruling. Done and done, no harm no foul. I have a hard time coming up with a scenario where I would not happily make an adjustment if someone makes a comment or challenge about how I handled things. It is more important to me, by far, that everyone have fun. Another recent example: Lady Anne is being interrogated by the prince, who uses a one-two punch of presence and dominate. I discussed with Alarik his thoughts about if Anne could resist the presence. I wanted her to be able to break out of the presence, but be completely effected by the dominate (mostly because Anne is an ice-princess and wouldn't love anyone). He disagreed. After a short discussion, I agreed to his point of view and the thread continued with everyone happy (so far as I can tell). Now suppose hypothetically the same thing happened without objection, even though Alarik disagreed, but he kept this to himself. In this case, he has less fun. Where I, blissfully unaware proceed, without getting the gift of feedback from a person with a different interpretation of the rules. If such a pattern were to continue, it would seem likely that resentment would begin to build. Please, for the sake of your fun and mine, don't hold your tongue. Better to have a small discussion in the moment, then have a huge blow-up of pent up aggravation at a later point. I certainly have had my share of handling things poorly. I do not mean to convey that I am not guilty of the things I am trying to lay out in this post. Bottom line? Lets have fun, lets learn from each other, lets find common ground. The more we talk about each person's interpretation of the rules (in situations that have not been clearly spelled out by the Mods), openly and honestly the closer we get to a common understanding. We are all each others teachers, and each others students. Vamp on. --MM Edited by Margo Moreau, Wednesday, 25. December 2013, 12:19.

Agree, communication is best! Until people know each other well enough to intuit and trust enough, I've found things flow better when people aren't scared to communicate. Anyone can feel free to IM or PM me with a question or issue if they got it. Internal dialogue issues, I tend to notice because I've had a few times where people assume the internal dialogue/perspective is more than it is or can be noticed by other characters and I'm all 0.o. I try to be very careful separating internal dialogue with actual action/speech while reading posts for that reason. Merry Christmas btw! |

Dove hummed to the music, singing along in his head. Oh when the cold wind blows. I feel it to the bone. Oh when you say you know. I feel I'm not alone. I hear the words you say. Your mouth against my skin. My world just falls away. You light me from within. Ah, what the hell, there was nobody around. Ms. Leo wouldn't be up for hours yet. Dove yanked out the headphone cord and let the music flood the house so he could sing along - loudly and not particularly well. "You and I, truth and lies. I've been fooling myself too long. You and I, breaking ties. How could we be so right and so wrong?" I don't think there's much chance for Dove's thoughts and words to be mistaken, but there's always writer error. I could miss off the italics or grey text accidentally. Dove's thoughts can, and have, been wildly inaccurate. What comes out of Dove's mouth can be just as wrong. Don't be afraid to slap him down for it, and if anyone ever has a concern about doing something to/with/at Dove, just shoot me a PM! I don't bite. We don't have to wait till the morning, the Sun will never go down. And we will be this way forever. Dove stuff! | |
