Books all the way. I didn't read the books until I'd finished season 3 of the show, yet I was still astounded. Of course the show did a great job adapting the books, and some of the additions and changes they made were sometimes even better (and some were worse, obviously) but the books will always be superior for me.

And don't skip the earlier books just because you've watched the show, because you will miss lots of splendid things if you do that.

The steel was polished to such a high sheen that she could see her reflection in the breastplate, gazing back at her as if from the bottom of a deep green pond.
The face of a drowned woman, Catelyn thought. Can you drown in grief?
She turned away sharply, angry with her own frailty. She had no time for the luxury of self-pity.

Haven't read the books, but some things definitely sound better in them (Robb and Jon would be a thousand times more interesting if they were early teens rather than bland action hero-looking 49 year olds). Then there are other things I prefer in the show, like Shae.

There are certain rules one must abide by to successfully survive a horror movie
I need to read more of the books. I've only read up to the first episode of S1. I preferred the book version of that even though it's even harder to understand. Am I making sense? :rip:

Seasons 1-4: Books
Season 5: Show

The show definitely does some things better (Shae until S4, Dorne... even if that was still weak, less filler, etc.) while the book slaughters it in other categories (Younger Robb is more interesting, Stannis)
