The original was kinda convoluted for me.
What parts did you find convoluted? Curious if the remake improves on them
The ending, which was like Twist-Ception from what I remember.
I didn't think it was toooooo awful Spoiler: click to toggle You mean the main girl imagining her sister and assuming the innocent new-wife was a homicidal murderer, right? My understanding is that, if you look at the dialogue scenes with the sister, you could cut her out and the family convos would still make sense. Tho imagining her sister alive is kind of a stretch. The deranged serial killer stuff also kinda makes sense because said the REAL serial killer lived directly across the hall from main girl at the sanitarium & told her about all the stuff, which does make sense actually.
Spoiler: click to toggle Deranged serial killer stuff? I mean what's real and what's imagined. In the original the main girl is cuckoo but then her sister's ghost is also real. The stepmother is one of her split personalities, but then there's also a real stepmother. So all the bitchy episodes with the stepmother were imagined, but then flashbacks reveal she left the dead sister to die. It's just a lot of homework.
Spoiler: click to toggle I think they toned down the stepmom stuff in this... Sorta. The main girl gets it in her head that the stepmom is a serial killer and basically gets suspicious of everything she does, and she starts acting rudely/passive aggressively/regular aggressively towards her, prompting bitchiness back and thus pushing her paranoid delusions further. Then it's revealed at the end the serial killer she thought the stepmom was is a woman across the hall in the asylum with her.... Though one can wonder how she forgot THE WOMAN SHE LIVED BY FOR YEARS so...
And wait, the sister's ghost is real in 1? She was just a split personality/hallucination in this. Without question. I think the circumstances around the sister dying changes too, since she kinda accidentally blew her sister and mom up (which... Does make more sense in context. I know she also thinks he stepmom murdered her mom, especially since said stepmom was having an affair with her dad, due to it not seeming like an accidental explosion)
Err.... That seemed less convoluted in my head

Err.... That seemed less convoluted in my head Suffice it to say, the remake changed a lot. Spoiler: click to toggle I don't remember a serial killer plot, and no one blew up.

No doubt about it. Safe to say it's not a rehash at least
