It’s been over a year since I’ve written anything about Warner Bros. prequel to The Shining, The Overlook Hotel.

Back in July of 2013 the studio brought Laeta Kalogridis and her partners Bradley Fischer and James Vanderbilt (the writer of Zodiac) onboard as producers. It was rumored that the film would “focus on what happened before Jack Torrance, his wife and their psychic son arrived at the haunted retreat where Torrance soon descends into violent madness.”

Then “Walking Dead” showrunner Glen Mazzara was hired to write the film and that’s the last we’ve heard of it. Until today. Now there are rumors circling that Warner Bros. has offered Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Children Of Men) the directing reigns. This would, of course, be f*cking awesome.

I’ve gone on record saying that this is the kind of prequel I’d really be interested in. A history of the hotel. A history of Stanley Kubrick’s version of the hotel. If it’s true, wow. I’m in.

A grain of salt though. Cuarón already had a good relationship with WB before he won an Oscar and made them almost a billion dollars with Gravity. He’s also rumored to be in talks to direct the new Harry Potter (ish) movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. I’m sure he has his pick of projects over there.

Right now I’d say this is in the realm of possibility, but I wouldn’t break out the champers until an official announcement.

I'm not sure how to feel about this, it could be good but it could be bad. I'm mixed.

What change? Cuarón was the only one offered a directing position
TWD S2-3 showrunner did all the writing, though I don't see a lot of that sticking if Cuarón directs

I loved the director's work in Gravity, so I'll be excited to see him film.

Wasn't interested until I saw Cuaron's name. David Fincher would also be good, as he's got a lot in common with Kubs.

Jersey boy for life!
Interested in this only for Cuarón. If it were anybody else directing this, I'd be all like :flip: but this makes me go  .

As others have said, I'm mixed. Loved the shining, both tv version and the Stanley Kubrick version. Just not sure about sequels/prequels to such classics of horror. Though with Cuaron's name i most likely will check it out. Try to be open minded!
I dunno what the hell's in there, but it's weird and pissed off, whatever it is.

It's sounding like Cuarón might be out. Bleh. Apparently there's a plot out to: it's centered around the guy who built the hotel
