The Iron Giant (1999)

Rated PG for fantasy action and mild language

This is the story of a nine-year-old boy named Hogarth Hughes who makes friends with an innocent alien giant robot that came from outer space. Meanwhile, a paranoid U.S. Government agent named Kent Mansley arrives in town, determined to destroy the giant at all costs. It's up to Hogarth to protect him by keeping him at Dean McCoppin's place in the junkyard.
If you've seen this movie, you already know what I'm about to say, but here goes: it's one of the best animated films of the '90s. Like, The Lion King good. Toy Story good. I watched this over Thanksgiving weekend, and I was so amazed by it that I had to watch it again. It's beautifully animated, I loved the characters, it's got a great message delivered with a lot of smarts, and it's hilarious on top of it.

There are certain rules one must abide by to successfully survive a horror movie
I'm surprised that we didn't even have a thread for this film yet. But yeah, you said everything I was going to. This film is so well made and such a great animation. One of my favorites.

The Dark Knight Rises didn't think so.

Agree completely with Kevin. One of the best animated movies of all time.

Not just good -- amazing. It's like if Pixar (the Pixar that made The Incredibles and Ratatouille*, not the Pixar that made the Cars movies) made a traditionally hand-drawn animated film. Pretty much everybody who saw it loved it. Unfortunately, like you said, the marketing for this was complete shit, and it bombed in theaters when it came out. Good thing we had DVD to get people to give it a second glance.

Oh, and Cartoon Network used to run 24-hour marathons of this movie every Thanksgiving. That's actually part of the reason why it became a cult classic -- because Ted Turner discovered it and loved it.

(* Both The Incredibles and Ratatouille, by the way, were made by this film's director, Brad Bird.)

Or if Mission: Impossible made one. The Mission: Impossible that made Mission: Impossible 4, not the Mission: Impossible that made Mission: Impossible 2.
