“Six years after the death of her husband, Amelia struggles to discipline her “out-of-control” six year-old Samuel –a son she finds difficult to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called “The Babadook” turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. And when Amelia begins to see glimpses of the creature herself, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may well be real.”

The scariest film of 2014 has been added on Netflix and I thought it was really good. The ended fumbled a bit, but the acting was great, the Babadook was menacing, and it was creepy as hell.

My cat was locked in the next room unbeknownst to me, so while I was watching this I started hearing weird noises. Just about had a heart attack.

The first half was really solid, but I agree it started stumbling (more in the second half than just the ending; I started noticing too many similarities to The Shining). Esse Davis was incredible, though.

I loved the first half. The second half was still really good but it wasn't nearly as scary.

Yeah, they showed the monster way too early.

Forget about the bloody gods and lsiten to what I'm telling you
I kinda want to see this, but I already know it's NOT going to come close to hype since none of these "Best horror movie of all time" films love up to it. And we always seem to get one a year

Well, your expectations might be at the right level to enjoy it. It's definitely better than The Conjuring.

So, I finally saw this last night. Blown right the fuck away. I didn't think it stumbled at all in the second half; it was just a great movie from beginning to end. The hype is definitely justified, because this was probably one of the best horror films I've seen in the last five years or so, up there with It Follows, Insidious, and The Cabin in the Woods. What really made it work for me was that, even if you take out the supernatural elements, you still have a very disturbing domestic drama. Throw in the monster, though, and that story is enriched further and made into something truly frightening, especially once you think about what the monster represents. And it definitely helped that Essie Davis was absolutely outstanding, and that Jennifer Kent made the whole film drip with old-school style.

And I wasn't even thinking about The Shining during the third act. Now that you mention it, I can see a slight similarity in

but that's about where my comparisons begin and end.

Fun fact: when I was watching this, my power briefly went out about fifteen minutes in. You better believe that was on my mind the rest of the way through.

My full review is here.
