Name a movie that treads the line between horror and other genres (thriller, drama, action, etc) and the next person says whether it belongs in the horror genre or not.

I'll start: Se7en

Even if I'd associate it more with crime thrillers, ya, definitely on the horror side for me.

Horror. I think this one is just Oscar snobbery. It wouldn't be at all out of place with 60s psychological horror like Repulsion.

Hmm, I really never think of it as a horror, but it really does hit all the major notes. Dark tone, dark atmosphere, genuinely creepy at points, killer stalking a target and murdering anyone in his way. It even has a final girl

Not Horror for me. Although it turns the darkness of fantasy tropes up to 11 (mean stepparent, creepy creature that preys on children), they're still basically fantasy tropes. And the general tone is more bleak and depressing than scary.

I put horror in as sort of subgenre too it. It does have some fairly creepy moments (like them wandering around waiting for the aliens to first strike. The fact it's a horror sequel kind gives it some help too and it does use a lot of horror tropes) That said, it's without a doubt an action film first and foremost.

So, horror, but not as the primary genre.

Once again, more associated with crime thriller, but it's undeniably got strong horror elements working in its favor, with the cat & mouse, cannibalism, & skinning, let alone that tense ending. :hdu:

Psycho
Actually, after watching it recently, I'd say it's got much more of a Southern Gothic vibe than straight up horror (the only scene that truly embraces it is when Noah dies cause that's the first time we see Samara come out of the screen), everything else is just tense, foreboding tale of dark secrets that feels like a visual novel. I'm not saying it makes it less of a horror, it just has much more of a dramatic element that I hadn't noticed until now.

I'd arguably say not, ppl like to claim it's the definitive original slasher, but I saw Peeping Tom & know the truth. It's got crime thriller & suspense masterfully blended together, but horror is only casually placed throughout the film, even if that ending makes me want to say otherwise.

Children's horror, but horror. An alternate family of creepy button-eyed people could easily be a Twilight Zone episode.

Since I guess no one has seen A Clockwork Orange, Nightmare Before Christmas
