Straight Outta Compton (2015)

Rated R for language throughout, strong sexuality/nudity, violence, and drug use

In 1987, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had: their music. Taking us back to where it all began, Straight Outta Compton tells the true story of how these cultural rebels -- armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talent -- stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world's most dangerous group, N.W.A. And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today.
Saw this last night with family. It's probably the first movie in a while that we all agreed on the merits of -- it's an amazing movie. It goes into a lot of detail on N.W.A and, more importantly, makes it extremely compelling. The whole movie was so well-done from start to finish, with a great cast, a great story, and of course, the band's best music, which is both wonderful on its own and is woven into the story really well. The only thing I can really fault it for is that it kind of omitted a lot of the more questionable stuff that N.W.A did and rapped about, particularly as far as women are concerned; odd, given that a huge chunk of the story is about how controversial these guys were. Beyond that, though, I loved it.

I was supposed to see this on Friday but had to prepare for a trip. Might end up seeing it in New York which is...ironic, considering the East/West stuff.

It doesn't really come up in this film. That stuff mostly took place after N.W.A was big, when most of its members had gone their separate ways. There is a brief scene with Tupac and Dr. Dre recording "California Love", and Suge Knight is a minor character, but that's about it.

Tupac is in it?! Performing California Love?! I gotta see this.
------------------

I gotta talk about the incredible likeness to the real people. Eazy E was on point. At times Dr. Dre looked off, but in certain angles it was uncanny. And Ice Cube's son is probably the only person in the world that looks like Ice Cube. But holy hell @ the guy they had playing Tuac. Where was he when they were making that lame Biggie movie?

As for the film itself, liked it a lot, though some things seemed rushed or cliffnotes-y. You gotta cringe at forced lines like "So how's that script for 'Friday' coming?" And you're right that they skirted around some problematic things about the group. Hell, the actual track "Straight Outta Compton" has one of the most baffling misogynistic verses ever courtesy of MC Ren (aka that one band member who wasn't E/Dre/Cube/the one that looks white). But like I said, the actors make this movie. Ice Cube Jr. has had a lifetime of learning his dad's mannerisms, and Jason Mitchell as E deserves awards attention.

As for good rap movies, I do like 8 Mile and Hustle and Flow. Unless we're strictly talking biopics.
