A climbing expedition on Mt. Everest is devastated by a severe snow storm.

Anyone seen it? Is it worth it? I'm hearing some good things about the IMAX 3D. Like, Gravity good. But not much else. I worry it'll be like other true story action dramas like The Perfect Storm and World Trade Center with the generic characters and gratuitous "wife at home worrying about her husband" scenes.
-----------

Ended up shilling out dat IMAX money to see it. Kinda wasn't worth it. There was some good cinematography (though you can't help wondering what's real and what's CGI and why you're not just watching a documentary with 100% authentic images), but the trailers were misleading. There was not a lot of action, and most of it is just guys shivering on a mountain....in 3D!!!! Which is weird because this wasn't even released in regular theaters for the opening weekend. The studio wants you to see it in IMAX 3D *that* bad.

But not really the movie's fault that it stuck to the true story and the trailers made it look like Cliffhanger, and I enjoyed it overall. I certainly scratched climbing Mount Everest off the bucket list. I've seen people complain about not telling who was who, partly because they spend a lot of it in heavy mountain gear, but they were well developed enough and even all had different accents so I didn't have that problem.

As for "gratuitous wife at home worrying about her husband" scenes, this certainly had that, but damn did Keira Knightly turn up the waterworks. There was five feet of snot hanging out of her nose on that big ass screen. Gotta give her credit. On the other hand, no idea why Jake Gyllenhaal was in this. He didn't do anything.

Yeah, I heard this was kind of a dud to say the least. Especially the 3D.

This reminds of The Walk, in being a forgotten big screen spectacle, and In the Heart of the Sea.
