Should Horror Let Old Icons Rest?

Forget about the bloody gods and lsiten to what I'm telling you
So, one thing I thought of today is that our generation's horror is severely lacking in icons. In fact, te only new one from the 2000s is the Jigsaw puppet. One villain. Instead, most the time was spent trying to resurrect old ones like Nichael, Ghostface, Leatherface, Jason, and the like.
Not only that, but I don't think we have a single iconic final girl. No Sidney Prescott or Laurie Strode of our generation :/

I guess my question is, do you think it'd be better to abandon some older franchises to truly die and create new mainstream ones? (We have some DTV ones, like Hatchet, but they aren't icons, and FD/PA are successful, but it's hard for an invisible killer to be iconic)

I think that maybe all the old icons, should have ONE more movie to try and go out with a bang. But then they should probably just be let go.

There are certain rules one must abide by to successfully survive a horror movie
I agree with Tay, just one more movie for all of the old icons, then we should start fresh with new and original icons.

i do love the old icons but new horror villians are a good start. with a bigger budget these antagonist could have been huge names

Chromeskull- Laid To Rest series

Max Seed- Seed

Kzl303- Rest Stop series

Damon: im bad Andie i do things i kill people

Andie: why do you kill people

Damon: because i like it- Damon Salvatore talking to Andie Star from season 2 of the Vampire Diaries

I'm in California dreaming about who we used to be
I'd prefer to have more horror icons. I love the old but we need new as well.

So hello from the other side
I must've called a thousand times
To tell you I'm sorry, for everything that I've done
But when I call you never seem to be home

IF they do come back for that "one last big hit," I'd want it to be GOOD. Not crap like the ANOES remake or TC3D
I really would rather see horror break new ground than go back to the old stuff :/ (BOTH would be ideal, but if we can only get one....)
Any other opinions?

posting again and repeating new ideas are sorely needed in horror. ANYTHING is better then found footage

But Charlie is on his way according to this. The Found Footage Freddy is here.

Erin could have been the iconic final girl if You're Next didn't underperform and Annabelle is one the most recent horror characters that is widely recognized. I want new icons but it's harder for these new franchises since they change the villain throughout the films (Insidious) or they are invisible (PA/FD). Mr. Babadook has the potential to become one in a couple of years and so can Bagoul from Sinister if 2 is success and more are made.

Excuse me while I go kill myself at the thought of her being an icon.

You ARE right about Annabelle, though. And Baghuul stands a chance as well. Not sure about The Babadook since I genuinely don't even know how it looks or what it is. And about the invisible thing being another large issue. I'd also say that the movies with potentially iconic characters don't seem to find the same amount of success or aren't given wide releases (while I hate to admit it...... You are right about Erin, and "David" would've stood a shot too to be honest)

When it comes down to what makes a horror character iconic the look/name/and weapon can really matter. Annabelle is arguably the most recent one that has potential since both movies featuring her were huge hits and she is the most advertised character in both. The name has been tainted the way Michael and Freddy has been so I think she's on her way. The Babadook can get there as more and more people watch it through Netflix and the intense critical acclaim help him. It has a very memorable look and voice, one that can easily made into merchandise. Watch it and you'll see how he could become one.
