Forget about the bloody gods and lsiten to what I'm telling you
You're describing characters, not performances. I can't judge though, since I've yet to see either movie

In American Hustle, he is a angry rookie in the FBI with a big dream to be something big.
Played like an emotional man with bipolar disorder. The scene after he kicks Louis CK's ass and is trying to brush it off is 100% Pat. As is the scene where he has the freak out over sex. The ONLY difference is a Jewfro.

I'm glad this got five nominations. Picture, director, screenplay, Adams, and especially Cooper are completely undeserved.

Watch Goodfellas instead. See this afterward only if you're a fan of Lawrence and Bale. The rest is meh. If it wins, it'll be the worst best picture since Crash.

Jersey boy for life!
Finally wrote my full review. I agree that it's pretty "meh", but it was at least enjoyable to watch. Had this film been made as a lightweight crime caper rather than trying to imitate the great crime movies of the '70s and '80s, I don't think I (or most of us, for that matter) would've had much of a problem with it. As it is, though, it felt flashy but empty, like a pale imitation of something like GoodFellas or Dog Day Afternoon.

This movie got 10 nominations. Sue me, but I think it deserves it all of it's nominations.

I'm in California dreaming about who we used to be
I still need to see for myself, but I'm certainly not shocked or appalled by the awards it got. It seems very deserving, and it was to be expected

So hello from the other side
I must've called a thousand times
To tell you I'm sorry, for everything that I've done
But when I call you never seem to be home

The movie isn't a fast paced action movie. But it has a lot of underlying themes, and I think a lot of people are missing all of them. And that's why they are like "haha...lammmeeeee".
It's actually quite brilliant. It's definitely not a movie for the general public.
It has a targeted audience.

I think what interests me most about this movie is the idea of Jennifer Lawrence playing a mother. Or at least, I gathered that from clips/trailers. I'm really curious to see her play it since that's very different from anything I've seen her do.

I'm not even going to go into the "too deep for you" argument, but what I will say is that it's not the storyline (which includes themes) getting the hate, it's the style and atmosphere. Underlying themes have literally nothing to do with those.
I can't see it, so I can't judge, but that's not what people on here are criticizing.
