Kursten walked down the street, work concluded. The library wasn't particularly busy, it rarely was, but there were a few students that came by that needed his particular specialization. They usually went away wondering what someone with his knowledge was doing in a mere library, but he just did the usual, shrug and say "Who knows?" Sometimes they took it as some great mystery, but in reality it was just something that paid the bills as he worked.

His work on the Book was proceeding smoothly. He was understanding more and more of the archaic text each day, which was pretty good for a language that just seemed to be completely nonexistent anywhere else. In all his research, he hasn't found a single tome with similar script, let alone a translated piece. Still, he was tired, and he'd worked enough for one day.

When he went to cross the street, a car zoomed past the crosswalk, hitting him square in the body at high speed. Drystan bounced, flying into the air, and landing down a good ten feet away, blood trailing at his feet. Needless to say, the car zoomed away, hoping to outrun any police that might be called for him. At that speed, no one could survive...at least no one normal.

"Well...that ruined my day..." Kursten murmurs to himself.

Today was pretty good! Actually, most days were pretty good. At least if you were like Destiny and thusly blind to the existential and philosophical horrors of the world through the sheer power of positive thinking. And luckily for her, she was!

Oh shit did that guy just get hit by a car?

That wasn't happy at all.

Destiny gripped the strap of her bright red satchel/first aid kit (with a white sticky-tape cross on the front) so it wouldn't bounce as she ran out into the middle to examine the presumable manslaughter (did running away make it count as homicide instead?) victim.

"Oh fuckerbiscuits! Sir, sir, can you hear me?"

Torn muscle, organs, bone, all kinds of stuff that came together to make a human body when there wasn't a giant hole in it. The kind of catastrophic injury that was dealt to him wouldn't normally be the kind you'd ever walk away from. However, Kursten had the advantage of a body that was able to knit itself back together...thanks to a little intervention from an odd little artifact.

"Y-yeah." Kursten mutters, wheezing a bit as a tendril inside his body pulled bone out of his lung so it could repair itself. "No need to shout...you're loud..."

Kursten forces himself to sit up before realizing that this was not something that someone who just got hit by a car would do. In doing so, his head goes into a panic, while he himself just kind of freezes. "Uhh...err...I mean..."

Eventually he just decides to lay down. That was what people did after they got hit by cars, wasn't it?

Well, he was sitting up! That sure was a good sign, especially since she was pretty sure she could see through him in places.

And he was talking, which was especially good because she was also pretty sure that she'd seen a piece of lung (or maybe it was spleen - she needed a closer examination) kind of flopping out there.

He also smelled a little. A lot. But that was unrelated.

"Do you want me to get you out of the road, sir?" she asked, trying to be helpful. "I'm not very strong, but I could probably dra-no, that's a terrible idea."

She knelt by Kursten, not bothered by the various bits of him that were scattered about.

"Sir, I'm going to call you an ambulance and patch you up best I can until it can get here. Please don't move in case you hurt yourself. I mean, it probably won't make a difference, given your current situation, but let's not tempt fate because that's just a terrible idea."

She beamed as she pulled off her satchel and unzipped it. "I'm sure you'll be just fine!"

Well, she didn't seem to question the logic of him not being dead. That was a relief.

"Uhh...sounds good. You think I need an ambulance?"

He looks out and sees a piece of him that looked suspiciously like a kidney. "Hrm...I'd rather not, if that's okay. I'm feeling pretty fine. I guess it was only a flesh wound."

Laying back down, Kursten looks up at the sky. "Nah, the street is warm. So long as no more cars coming my way, I think I could lay down here a bit. It's warm."

"Sir, this doesn't look much like a flesh wound." Destiny said as she began to examine him, and the surrounding area, properly. "Unless you mean fleshy. It's very, very fleshy. Because there is lots of... flesh... everywhere."

She stopped short, gauze in hand.

Well. That was... unusual.

Buttersnaps. How was she going to patch this up?

"Sir, this may be a silly question, but are you dead? Because I think you do need an ambulance if that's the case. Even if it is taking you to the morgue."

Kursten looks down to the part of his body where she is, and gulps. That was a very big hole.

"Well...uhh...no. I'm not dead. Well...at least I don't think I am."

Looking back down again, he saw that both the hole was smaller, and there was more stuff inside of it. That didn't happen every day.

"I don't think I need to go to the morgue." Kursten pushes himself up, making sure to catch a bit of stuff that fell out and stuff it back in, taken by a wandering tendril.

"I think we should clean this up. Way it looks, people will think there's a murder here."

He had tentacles. Lotsa tentacles. Despite not being Japanese, Destiny could not help but feel slightly uncomfortable with this actually not recent development.

She looked up at Kurtsten with her green eyes wide, a faint glow around the edges of the irises.

"Sir?" she asked, "You do realise you have tentacles inside your body, don't you?"

Okay, it was another silly question. But what if he didn't? If she had tentacles inside of her, she'd sure want someone to let her know, and not just assume that she was already aware of it!

Then she looked down at the blood and body bits around them.

"Well, I'm sure we can just tell them that there wasn't, because your attempted murderer slash manslaughterererrrer is very, very bad at it."

Kursten grins a bit, looking very silly. "Well..no harm no foul, eh?"

With that, he coughs. Guess something was still in the process of putting itself back together.

Kursten tilts his head. "Uhh...I don't know what you're talking about. I'm not using any tentacles now...."

He blinks. "Err...I meant I don't have any tentacles...I..." Kursten looks down back into the hole, and one is perfectly visible. "Huh...that's...that's funny..."

THAT was new. He never saw a tentacle inside of him before...usually they just grew out of wherever was handy. Normally he didn't need such drastic healing.

"I...I think I'm going to faint...or throw up...or both..."

"Don't worry, sir! I have prepared for that!" Destiny said. She tucked the gauze back into the first-aid bag and pulled out a vomit-proof bag (which was in fact handily marked with 'Safe for vomiting!'). She passed it to him.

"Now, be good and sit down away from the the blood, and remember to take deep breaths and relax." she instructed as she rolled up her sleeves, exposing the vicious looking fissures on her arms. She waited for him to do as she was told before she shook her arms out, hopped from foot to foot, took a deep breath and focused. It was all part of getting in the zone.

What zone, you ask?

Why,the zone of FIRE, of course!

The fissures on her arms opened up and flickering fire flowed forth from them, blue tongues of flame licking at the air and then the ground as she directed the fiery river down to the blood. There was a smell of cooking meat as first the blood and meat was burnt to a sizzling crisp and then, with visible effort from her, to ashes.

The fire flickered and died away, and a sweaty Destiny beamed as she admired the scorchmarks on the street.

"There! Now they'll just think that there was a terrifying, random, life-questioning inducing spontaneous combustion!"
