Kursten walked down the street, work concluded. The library wasn't particularly busy, it rarely was, but there were a few students that came by that needed his particular specialization. They usually went away wondering what someone with his knowledge was doing in a mere library, but he just did the usual, shrug and say "Who knows?" Sometimes they took it as some great mystery, but in reality it was just something that paid the bills as he worked.

His work on the Book was proceeding smoothly. He was understanding more and more of the archaic text each day, which was pretty good for a language that just seemed to be completely nonexistent anywhere else. In all his research, he hasn't found a single tome with similar script, let alone a translated piece. Still, he was tired, and he'd worked enough for one day.

When he went to cross the street, a car zoomed past the crosswalk, hitting him square in the body at high speed. Drystan bounced, flying into the air, and landing down a good ten feet away, blood trailing at his feet. Needless to say, the car zoomed away, hoping to outrun any police that might be called for him. At that speed, no one could survive...at least no one normal.

"Well...that ruined my day..." Kursten murmurs to himself.

Kursten oversees the conversation between sisters like a wide eyed observer looking at something horrific, he knows he can't interfere, but he can't take his eyes away. "...uhh..." he says, trying to break in, but he honestly can barely comprehend what's going on. "A goose?"

He blinks as Tru directs the conversation towards him, and he gets an immediate fight/flight response to the sudden attention. "Uhh...err..not...really? I mean, I tend to act a lot the same way at work...it helps that I only really talk to my managers and people who have specific questions for me as a reference librarian. I mean, I guess I try to be more outspoken, but..." He lapses into mumbling, indirectly proving his point.

"But you kind of fail at it, I'm guessing. Hey, better than most your conversation being the dead and dying, right?"

"Unless that's the kind of people that attend his library. "

The two sisters paused at this to wonder and imagine zombies with library fines before Destiny, hoping to reassure Kursten a little, said finally "Well, I think you're doing just fine. You don't have to be loud or anything."

"I'm just surprised you can hear him over yourself." Tru said in a friendly way. "So, what were you doing if not each other then?"

Kursten winces. "Not all the time! I'm really good at answering people's questions, it's only when I have to do investigative work that it gets troublesome..." He tilts his head, taking Destiny's suggestion literally. "We do get a few sick patients at the library now and then, or their assistants checking out a book for them. I haven't tried helping out a dead person yet...doing so seems unlikely."

He smiles. "Yeah! I don't need to worry about being loud enough, because I can just tell people to talk more quietly because we're in a library! I really lucked out when I got that job."

Laughing, he nods at Tru. "It was a bit tough, but we managed to make it work." When she asks him what they were doing, he responded truthfully, ignoring the jab she made. "We were talking about the fire marks on you and Destiny's arms! They're very intriguing, and I was hoping to study the arms and the flames they produce more intently!"

"You never know. It could be a very unusual day down at the morgue!" Destiny laughed.

"Zombies looking for that high class of brain food."

"Only regular book readers will do!" Tru added, then snorted at at the last thing he said.

"What's there to learn? They're big flamey rips of ouchy burny pain. You two really need to carry out tests to figure that out? Because I can tell you that just from looking at them, and I haven't even got a degree."

Kursten considers the possibility. "I don't think that's likely to happen, but if you say so, I should get cracking to prepare for it! I won't let zombies eat the brains of our patrons!"

He winces a bit as she laughs at the thing that intrigued him so much, he grows a bit defensive in response to the ridicule. "Hey! This is an unexplained phenomenon...the standard magic that people use isn't what's powering those arms. And we don't know what it is...that alone makes it an important topic for further study!"

With that explained, he starts attacking his ice cream, hoping that Tru won't do anything else that causes him to go off balance...this whole family seemed really good at doing that...

Tru shrugged, not bothered by his hurt tones. "Does it really matter why it works, so long as it does?" she said, "It does what it does, that's all that matters."

"Wouldn't you like to figure out why we have it, and its limitations and capabilities, why mages can't do it?" Destiny said with a suffering sigh. She reached up and batted her sister lightly on the back of the head, with about as much force as a bouquet of wilting kittens."Besides, we're excited by this, so don't rain on our sciencey parades."

"...nerds."

"Philistine."

"Dork brigade."

"Cro-Magnon.

"Damn straight." Tru replied and began to assault her ice-cream with similar gusto to Kursten. Destiny picked up her own again and nommed a little before gesturing to Kursten.

"Are you alright to head home shortly?" she asked, "I don't want to be rude, and I'm not trying to be all 'ooh, get out of here' or anything, but I'd really hate for you to walk back in the pitch black and it's getting a little late! Will you be okay to get home?"

Kursten shakes his head, focusing on his ice cream. However, as Tru and Destiny get into a match, he takes scoops from his bowl as if it was popcorn. As much as he was being insulted along with Destiny, it was fun watching the two sisters go at it. "Hmm...I wonder what it'd be like if I had a sibling. I hope I'd get along better than this..."

Turning to Destiny, he looks outside, and sees how dark it's getting. "Yeah, I should be heading home." Finishing his ice cream quickly, he sighs. "I was hoping to do the dishes before I left at least, but I really should get going. I'll make it up to you sometime later." He walks over to the sink and cleans his bowl, at least. "I'll be sure to come by again soon...this was really fun! Thanks for letting me come over...and for saving my life and all that!"

Destiny smiled at Kursten.

"Oh, I didn't really do anything at all, you saved yourself entirely. But you sure should visit! I'd really like that."

"We'll make extra for when you visit." Tru said, nodding.

Destiny gave him a hug before leading him out to the hallway and letting Kursten out the front door. She waved enthusiastically before shutting the door, and immediately let out a happy squeal.

"I have a friend!"

Tru wandered up. She laughed and slung an arm around her sister's shoulder, giving her a warm one-armed hug.

"Well done, Dee. You might get a respectable social life yet."

"Shut up, jarhead." Destiny said affectionately.

"Love you too."
