Kursten walked down the street, work concluded. The library wasn't particularly busy, it rarely was, but there were a few students that came by that needed his particular specialization. They usually went away wondering what someone with his knowledge was doing in a mere library, but he just did the usual, shrug and say "Who knows?" Sometimes they took it as some great mystery, but in reality it was just something that paid the bills as he worked.

His work on the Book was proceeding smoothly. He was understanding more and more of the archaic text each day, which was pretty good for a language that just seemed to be completely nonexistent anywhere else. In all his research, he hasn't found a single tome with similar script, let alone a translated piece. Still, he was tired, and he'd worked enough for one day.

When he went to cross the street, a car zoomed past the crosswalk, hitting him square in the body at high speed. Drystan bounced, flying into the air, and landing down a good ten feet away, blood trailing at his feet. Needless to say, the car zoomed away, hoping to outrun any police that might be called for him. At that speed, no one could survive...at least no one normal.

"Well...that ruined my day..." Kursten murmurs to himself.

Kursten runs the fingers of his free hand through his hair and laughs, a bit embarrassed as Destiny compliments him. "Hahaha...well, I think few people would agree about that. Least of all myself...if I knock my head into one more lamp..."

Looking over, he sees her pull out a chair, and then climb up on it. When he catches on to what she was doing, he walks over. "Uhh...I could get that for you." When he sees that she already finished, he slumps a bit, but shrugs. "Ahh, whatever then."

As she offers to pour him stew, he walks over, and his nose feels like it's gone to heaven. His mouth waters, and his head starts nodding. "Only...only if you've made enough, I don't want to impose..." he says, reticent voice completely contradicted by every part of his body language.

"Oh, it's fine. I just didn't think to ask. I guess I really should have!" Destiny said, regarding him fetching the bowls. She made a mental note to ask him in future. Unless he was busy. That'd be just plain rude.

"Well, I was hoping to keep some for tomorrow's lunch." came Harry's voice from behind him. Destiny looked around Kursten and made a face.

"Well, dad, if it's such a burden on you, I'll just buy you lunch tomorrow." she said sweetly. She then turned back to the counter and added a little more to the bowl before handing it over to Kursten and beginning to serve out the rest. Tru passed him a spoon and a fork and indicated the chair next to the space left by the one Destiny had taken.

"There's be more in the pot if you want some. We always make extra, since we eat so much. You can probably guess why." Destiny said, handing the now filled normal bowl to Harry. He stared at her.

"You told him?!"

"It came up in conversation!"

He sighed, and possibly breifly contemplated drowning himself in his stew again. Tru just snickered and flicked her sister's ear.

Hearing Destiny's dad call from behind, Kursten all but jumps. He didn't expect to hear him, and he didn't react well to surprise. He probably should have, though. "Oh...well that's fine then..." Kursten says, trying his darnedest not to look as disappointed as he feels. Destiny caught him off guard, and he looks incredibly surprised. He never would have imagined to talk back to his parents that way, and he just looks at her in a bit of shock until her father sits down. Blinking, he takes the bowl.

Sitting down, he turns to Destiny and tilts his head in confusion. "I can? The only reason I could think of why is because your dad likes taking it for lunch, and he told me that."

Turning to the father, Kursten shrugs. "She told me she doesn't really do magic, so that isn't going to be a drain on her energy. Or does the fire burn her out?"

Turning to Destiny, he purses his lips, confused. "And I wouldn't exactly call eradicating a crime scene conversation..."

"I left the clothes out on the table by the bathroom. I'm assuming that you'll want to have a shower first." Harry said pointedly, stirring his stew with his spoon once Tru gave him one. "After all, it'd be a waste of good clothes to put them on when you're so..."

Tru put a hand on his shoulder as she sat down.

"Dad. Stop it."

Harry grimaced, but apparently acquiesced if his slump was anything to go by.

"Fine. And to answer your question, yes. It burns them both out."

Destiny dragged her chair back over to its spot and sat down next to Kursten, then realised she had forgotten her own bowl. She fetched it from the counter before settling back down. While this was happening, Harry was running through Kursten's last statement in his head. His knuckles whitened. He gave Kursten an icy stare.

"You did what."

"Don't worry, dad! It's not a crime scene if there's no body!"

"That doesn't make it any better!"

"No, dad! It wasn't like that! He was the body. And since he's sitting her,e having a nice, civil dinner, he's obviously not one."

Kursten smiles a bit at harry, totally misreading the mood. "Thanks, that's very generous of you! I think I could use a shower...lying face-down in the middle of the street didn't do me any favors...and that's not even thinking about the blood..."

When Tru interrupts her, Kursten tilts his head. "Umm...I don't mean to be rude, but I don't think it's polite to interrupt someone like that, Tru. He has a point..."

After Harry confirms his suspicion on the result of the pyrokinesis, Kursten pulls out a little notepad and pencil. "Ah, thank you! So the pyrokinesis takes energy from the user, much like more traditional magic would...oh! And them both...does that mean Tru has the ability as well?" Kursten's scribbling picks up in pace. "Fascinating...was it hereditary? Or was it learned somehow? Ahh, so many questions, I could just...eep!"

Kursten stopped his rambling when he saw the stare that Harry was looking at him with.

"I...uh...what did I do? I got hit by a car." Kursten answered, simply. He wasn't sure what else there was to say. "Destiny is very good at emergency first aid. Between her and magic, I think I came out pretty good."

Tru just shook her head at Kursten's polite little 'oh but he had a point'. He'd learn. Ooooh, he'd fucking learn alright.

Destiny perked up when Kursten whipped out his notepad and started asking questions. That was a level of preparation she could appreciate, especially since her hair wasn't long enough to smuggle similar items in any more. She could answer a lot of questions, she was sure of that. Plus, it sure was nice to meet someone else with an intere-well, cuntwhistles, dad.

"Dad, he got a little hurt and I cleaned up his blood. I don't get what's so bad! I wouldn't let him in the house while you were here if I saw him shank a guy or something."

"She has a point, dad." Tru added. "You should probably relax. I don't see the problem with him long as she doesn't bleed out from a broken hymen or somethi-whoa, you okay, Dee?"

There was a mmmrf from her now choking sister.

"You need the Heimlich or something? Just choke some more if you do."

Destiny held up one finger and coughed the offending piece of meat out of where it was hiding and sent it on its merry way to be consumed by the cruel pit of despair known as her stomach.

"FINE!" she gasped. "I'm fine! PYROKINESIS IS A VERY HANDY ABILITY! Let's talk about that!"

Kursten winces a bit as both of the daughters seem to immediately come to his aid. "Hey...hey now, let's not go pointing fingers...I can't say he doesn't have a good reason to be upset...I didn't exactly, err...pick my words well...It's my fault..."

Turning to Tru though, he tilts his head. "I didn't quite catch that, Destiny could bleed somewhere? I wouldn't do anything like..." He was interrupted as Destiny began having a choking fit, and he rushed over. "A-Are you okay? Oh man...was it something I did? What should I do?"

When Destiny coughs out the meat, Kursten brightens considerably. "Oh, that's a relief. I'm glad you're not dying...you probably wouldn't have as easy a time of it as I would." When she brings up the subject of the pyrokinesis, his grin widens even further. "Oh, I'm sure it is! Can you tell me more about how it works? Where it comes from?" Kursten's hands go a bit crazy as he asks questions, trying to multitask spooning stew into his mouth and writing at the same time, to mixed results.

"Oh, might be something you do." Tru said with a grin, before yelping. She stuck out her tongue at Destiny, who pulled back her leg and stuck out her tongue in response before turning to Kursten.

"Ask away!" she said cheerily, ignoring her still somewhat smirky sister.

"Well, I only have my own research to go on, since no one else in the family seems to have ever looked into it, or at least, I don't have records of them doing so. So I don't know exactly how it works, though I know it does require a whole lot of energy and the more it's used, the more it takes. I don't know where it comes from, but I'm trying to find that out. What I do know is that it's not akin to traditional magic because crystals don't react and can't used as a power source. We also know that it's genetic, and a dominant trait at that, and possibly prone to mutations. There's four kids in my family and three of us have pyrokinesis. The other one, one of my older sisters, is an agrokinetic. She can control plants, so I guess it's a good thing mom named her Willow."

She laid her arm out on the table and indicated the closed fissures running up her arms.

"Now, the fire manifests from these. They open and the fire kind of... flows out like a river or a whips or something like that. It doesn't act like normal fire, no, not unless I kind of sever it, I guess you could say? Like, it won't even spread like real fire does, unless it's cut off from the source at which point it loses any unique qualities. Am I keeping up well enough for you, Kursten? I do have notes, actually! Notes with pictures that track the spread of the fissures, and even movement of the fire and other things like that."

Kursten shakes his head at Tru, still completely oblivious to her insinuations. "I don't know why you think I'm violent like that...I really wouldn't. I mean, not on purpose...but I don't think the odds of an accident are high enough to worry much about..."

He's distracted from feeling slightly hurt by Destiny, who proceeds to answer several of his questions. "So the power is hereditary, but doesn't always develop as pyrokinesis? Do they share similar properties despite the difference in focus?" Jotting down the information she gives him, Kursten is surprised when he looks up and sees the fissures on her arm.

"Woah...did it cause you pain as they formed, or does it hurt as they're used? Those look like some pretty deep gashes. Can you completely quench the fire yourself before you sever it, so there isn't any spread at all? I wonder what gives it those unique qualities..."

When Destiny just says that she has notes, Kursten hits himself on the forehead. "Well...looks like I got carried away, ehehe. I think checking your notes would be a good thing to do...but I have to eat this stew first."

With that, he goes back to greedily devouring the delicious stew, and if he didn't slow down he'd probably end up choking himself.

"Oooh, I do have a family tree that you might find interesting, going back to where the Emeralts split off from the Greenes proper! No one kept records of research, but they at least noted down what abilities were present, since it was in family stories and stuff."

She just smiled brightly, avoided answering about the pain and skipped right to the last part.

"Don't worry, you didn't get carried away one little bit. " she said with a reassuring smile. "Honestly, it's really nice for someone else to be interested in this. Especially someone with a differing skillset. I just hope you're satisfied with some of the answers I can give you."

She settled back and dug into her own stew, mushing up the potatoes with her spoon. Although both she and her sister were shorter and more slender than their father, they were far, far more ravenous than him. In fact, he was just barely able to finish his meal after them, while they were scraping the bowls.
