Kursten walked down the street, work concluded. The library wasn't particularly busy, it rarely was, but there were a few students that came by that needed his particular specialization. They usually went away wondering what someone with his knowledge was doing in a mere library, but he just did the usual, shrug and say "Who knows?" Sometimes they took it as some great mystery, but in reality it was just something that paid the bills as he worked. His work on the Book was proceeding smoothly. He was understanding more and more of the archaic text each day, which was pretty good for a language that just seemed to be completely nonexistent anywhere else. In all his research, he hasn't found a single tome with similar script, let alone a translated piece. Still, he was tired, and he'd worked enough for one day. When he went to cross the street, a car zoomed past the crosswalk, hitting him square in the body at high speed. Drystan bounced, flying into the air, and landing down a good ten feet away, blood trailing at his feet. Needless to say, the car zoomed away, hoping to outrun any police that might be called for him. At that speed, no one could survive...at least no one normal. "Well...that ruined my day..." Kursten murmurs to himself. |

Kursten saw her try to reach up, and bent his knees down a bit to let her, as he was curious what she was reaching up for. When she ruffled his hair, he stood back up again. "Hey...what was that for?" he mutters, before she compliments him and gives him a hug. With that, he blushes, and it's easier to see than usual thanks to the shower's warmth. "W-What brought all this on? I mean, thanks, but this seems a bit, er...out of nowhere?" He wasn't even dressed right, how could he be dashing? Maybe if he spent the time to make himself look good...but he'd just zipped out of the shower as fast as he could. This didn't make sense. Still, he decides that it doesn't really matter, and gives her a little squeeze around the sides, which was about the best he could do to return the hug with his arms pinned. |

"I just think you look nicer when you're, so there." Destiny said and stuck out her tongue at him as she put her hands on her hips to just just how goshdarn darn serious she was. "I don't think that's weird at all!" She tilted her head. "But why are you blushing?" Maybe he wasn't used to compliments. Which really, was all the more reason to compliment him more, so he would be. Besides, she thought he looked nice and it was her opinion that mattered when it came to her commenting. It was nice to be hugged though! |

Kursten winces, raising his hands in submission once she takes her hands away from him. "Uhh...yeah, I'm sorry, you're right. I guess it makes sense?" He scratches the back of his neck. "Ah shoot...I don't want to sound vain or anything, I shouldn't really treat it as a given that I'd look nice...that wasn't what I meant..." He really wasn't used to compliments. If he didn't get success, he was a failure, and if he did, he was doing what he was supposed to be doing and praise was unnecessary. Praise was ordinarily reserved for times when he was truly exceptional, which were few and far between. This made it feel rather uncomfortable when Destiny seemed to enjoy throwing them around like candy...not to even mention the physical contact. "I'm...I'm blushing?" Kursten asks, feeling his cheek. "Huh...I guess I am. Usually people can't see it. That's weird..." He doesn't answer the question, though, preferring to try to change the conversation. "I guess it's because of the shower...though I do take showers and my skin still tends to look drab afterwards..." |

"Oh, you're not vain or accepting a compliment. Unless you do what I do, and totally let it go to your head and you sure don't seem like the kind of guy to do that, you seem like the exact opposite. And if you think you look drab, you should see me in the mornings!" she said with a laugh. "So why do you think your skin looks like that? Is it an effect of the magic you use, or are you kind of like a library book that hasn't been read in a while?" She held out for a whole two second before proving herself incapable of not explaining the joke and adding "Dusty!" with a big grin. She pinched the back of her hand so she wouldn't laugh at her own terrible joke. "No, but really. I am kind of curious as to what physical effects your magic had. Tentacles make you grey?" |

Kursten grins. "You don't look like the kind of person that could ever look drab! You're very...uhh...vibrant, is what I mean to say..." He doesn't know if he's making sense, but at the very least, that much was clear to him. Despite the way she looked a bit too thin, she had an energy about her that was impossible to ignore. When she asks him why he looks the way he does, he grows a bit more serious. He's about to explain, when her joke catches him off guard, and he laughs when she explains it to him. "A bit more like I'm one that got left out in the rain." he says. "This book isn't exactly harmonious with the human body...but then, I'm better off with it than without. After all, I'd probably be roadkill if I wasn't using it today." Kursten grins. He likes explaining things. "Well, I don't know if it's just the loss of energy. Growing things takes the body a lot of energy, and while magic can help, a lot of times it just isn't enough. But there's more to it than that. After all...I wouldn't have white hair and grey eyes if that was it." He scratches his head. "I'm not sure what all the changes are...but I know I'm not the first in my family with these symptoms. The book was a heirloom...one passed down and used, but never really explored. Makes me wish we kept journals as a family...that'd make things a lot easier." |

Destiny practically glowed at being called vibrant. Her cousin Kaine would have died laughing at him, but Kaine was kind of an asshole that laughed at dead baby jokes, so really that was proof that it was a really nice compliment! She made a interested 'oooooh' noise at his explanation and and she poked Kursten lightly in the side, as if expecting to see a tentacle hop out and say hi there. "Maybe it's one of those things where it's like a self-fulfilling prophecy! Like... you think that you're after with it because of accidents, but really you'd be better off without it because you wouldn't have the accidents. It's just that you pay less attention to your own safety because you don't have to in order to survive, and really that's why the mishaps happen and it's just really to make you more dependant because first you think you need it to survive, and then you actually can't. She took a breath. "But I'm just talking rubbish, I guess! Your hair isn't normally white though? I kind of thought you were just an albino!" The lack of journals warranted making a face."You know, this not keeping records thing is a serious pain in the butt. It's like our families took notes from each other on how to not take notes or something!" |

Kursten rubs his side where he was poked. He thinks about asking her why she did that, but instead he just leaves it be. She looks pretty happy, so he didn't want to intrude on that feeling. When she brings up the self-fulfilling prophecy, he shakes his head. "I...doubt that. I don't exactly want the regeneration to happen...if you hadn't been there with those calorie bars, I'd probably have been sick for days. Besides, I always look both ways before crossing the street...that guy just didn't slow down a hair." He laughs. "No, I'm not an albino. I honestly think the magic in this has an interesting interaction with the human body, I'm not sure exactly how it manifests itself though. I've tried doing some self-tests, but those are always a bit tricky. Can't be as bad as what's happened to you, though." He looks askance at her scars again. Still, her last comment strikes a chord in him. "I know, right? I can't believe no one else wanted to write a record of this stuff down...it effects our families on a fundamental level. I'd say there was something funny going on...but I don't know why they'd try and conceal it." |

Destiny gave him a worried look when he said his regeneration would have made him sick for days had she not been able to help. “Oh that sounds a lot worse than what I deal with; I only ever had real trouble when someone forced my arms open. Usually I recover quickly enough!” She chewed on her lip, thinking. “Oh, I know! I have a lot of surplus bars! You could totally have some! That way, you could have emergency supplies too. If you want, we can even pick you up a box next time we order. Dad buys them in bulk, since it’s the easiest way to keep up with me and Tru, and we both pay him half for it. If you don’t like the idea of charity, you can always give us a little money for it, but I don’t mind letting you have some for free.” She cast a glance down at her arms as he did. “Oh, they’re really not so bad. Sure nowhere near as cool as your hair though, and I think your scars are kind of nice! My eldest sister has lots of scars from fighting and she’s just really, really cool so I used to want them, except I’d probably just bleed to death so it’s a good thing I don’t do what she does. But I always thought regeneration healed completely, the people I know with it always did, so it is kind of interesting that yours doesn’t! Do you scar for every wound that you receive, or just the severe ones like today?” She looked down at her box of research and then up at him. “Well, we can always look on the bright side. It just leaves more for us to discover! If you have kids, or if you bring what you've done home, they can look back on what you've discovered and just be completely blown away by it!” |

Kursten blinks, despite the conversation being about him at the moment, the information about Destiny intrigued him. "Someone forced your arms open? Why would they do that? And what happened when they did?" When she offers the bars, Kursten's jaw drops. "You'd do that? For me? Wow...that's probably the most generous anyone's been to me in...well, ever." He tries to think of something else to say to that. "Uhh...thanks. A lot...err..." He struggles a bit more, but eventually gives up, letting it hang. Any efforts to change the subject away from himself proved futile. "Uhh...I don't think my hair's all that great, but I'm glad you think it's cool...I guess." When she asks about his scars, Kursten shrugs and rolls up his sleeve. On his forearm is a staggering lattice of white marks, almost making his arm look like a flesh-colored checker board. "Yep. I'm not sure about the regeneration, I'd assume it's more augmented biology than healing magic in nature, which would explain why the tentacles exist in the first place. Not really sure, though, I need to do more research." He nods at her sentiment. "Yeah! I hope I can find something really important to take home, once it gets a bit less...err, dangerous." |

“Oh, it was just some guy my parents knew back then. Some kind of experimental doctor, I think.” Destiny said with a shrug. “He got the idea that he could skip over the natural spread of my fissures. But all he ended up doing was tearing my arm open, all the way to the elbow.” She laughed a little as she remembered. “The guy was just lucky mom wasn't there, because I inherited it from her! I think dad, not Harry but my biological one, chased him for five blocks before he realised I was bleeding really badly and he had to come back. It sure is a shame he never caught him, but I guess it was actually a good thing because he really might have done something nasty and that'd just have been awful. It was the only time I ever saw him get mad, and if you knew him, you’d be amazed at the idea of him speaking in anything over a whisper. He was just that kind of guy!" She leant in to look at his scars more closely, her face a few inches away from his arm. She winced slightly. "They looks like they must have been really painful. Do you have painkillers for it, or does it fade away so quickly you don't need them? You didn't seem to need any today, and that was a pretty awful hit. I was kind of scared that you were already dead by the time I reached you, so I'm really glad you sat up and stuff, even if I still kind of thought you were dead. In hindsight, I guess I should have been more surprised by that, but oh well! I'm guessing there is just a little magic, enough to keep you from passing on from something that would otherwise be an instantaneously lethal hit. Otherwise, advanced biology seems like a fair idea!" |
