Kursten walked down the street, work concluded. The library wasn't particularly busy, it rarely was, but there were a few students that came by that needed his particular specialization. They usually went away wondering what someone with his knowledge was doing in a mere library, but he just did the usual, shrug and say "Who knows?" Sometimes they took it as some great mystery, but in reality it was just something that paid the bills as he worked. His work on the Book was proceeding smoothly. He was understanding more and more of the archaic text each day, which was pretty good for a language that just seemed to be completely nonexistent anywhere else. In all his research, he hasn't found a single tome with similar script, let alone a translated piece. Still, he was tired, and he'd worked enough for one day. When he went to cross the street, a car zoomed past the crosswalk, hitting him square in the body at high speed. Drystan bounced, flying into the air, and landing down a good ten feet away, blood trailing at his feet. Needless to say, the car zoomed away, hoping to outrun any police that might be called for him. At that speed, no one could survive...at least no one normal. "Well...that ruined my day..." Kursten murmurs to himself. |

Kursten can't help but shudder at the thought about what had happened to her arm. "Wow...my body's been through some crazy stuff, but that sounds horrible. Did you heal up alright? Is that why your scar seems bigger than your sister's?" He recalls the pictures of the arms. "Or is that just incidental?" Despite the horrifying image of the arm, he can't help but break into a weakly held back giggle at the idea of her dad chasing the poor doctor all across the city. "I'm sorry, that's not very nice...but that sounds hilarious. The poor guy..." When she inquires into his arms, they shrug. "I think they have a natural painkiller or something...I don't really feel them growing as anything more than a sensation that it happened. And they heal the skin back as they...recede? I think that's the right word for it." Thinking about the whole not-dying thing, he shrugs. "I don't really know enough about it, but that's likely. It definitely has an effect that prevents unconsciousness...and likely dulls pain in general. I'd likely have done nothing but scream bloody murder, die, or go comatose after that car hit otherwise." He shrugs. "All told, yours seems a lot less...benign...to me. But that'd probably only really make itself evident after some more experimentation." |

Destiny shook her head. "Oh no, I healed up from that after a while! Well, until the fissure just split my arm open afterwards anyway, but that isn't here or there. I practice with mine much more, it's also why my fire is blue and hers isn't." She smiled when he giggled, glad that was his reaction. "It really was. Dad leapt clear over the gate to go after him, and I think the guy nearly crapped his trousers when he did!" The painkiller part was a relief to hear. The idea of Kursten suffering that kind of pain repeatedly wasn't exactly a pleasant one. "Possibly it kicks your natural painkillers into overdrive, or even provides additional glands for their production... though endorphins would give a blissful feeling, some kind of rush, rather than total numbness like that. This is like some form of idiopathic neuropathy where your nerves are incapable of registering the pain to begin with.... Do you feel pain normally? Like, if you stub your toe. And if so, is it specific kinds of harm? If I pinched you, would you feel that, do you think? Or if I... pricked you with a needle, for example?" |

Kursten nods. "So, the split isn't any worse than it is now?" Looking down at her arm again, he sighs. "Not that that is saying much...it does look pretty bad..." He laughs. "Gosh, that poor guy. It's better to think that he screwed up royally...if it was just an accident and he had an angry dad running him down across half the city...well, I don't envy him either way!" He begins taking notes as Destiny rattles off possible explanations for how the book's powers manifest themselves. "Hrm...I do feel pain, and it only really kicks in in extreme cases, or when it's the powers themselves are manifesting. So, if I like, stub a toe or bang my head, yeah, that'll hurt. The bruise will go away really fast, though, so it's still obviously working on things...hrm, this really does bear more investigation..." |

"Oh, they're not as bad as they will be! I'm predicting that they'll begin spreading along my feet around when I'm twenty-one, and then I can kick things and set them on fire with my feet! If I make it to twenty-five, I may even get the ones on the back of my throat!" She rubbed her neck as she thought of that and made a displeased face. "I just hope that my voice doesn't go weird when I form them there. My older sister still sounds the same, but she always sounded kind of gruff anyway.... Sorry, I just got completely sidetracked there! Hmmm... I'll see if I can find anything relevant in my textbooks tonight. To refresh my memory, you know?" she said, heading over to her coffee table and starting looking through the titles she had there. "If, and I sure hope it's if and not when, you get hurt seriously again, do you think you could remember to supply some other form of tactile stimulation on the affected area? Like touching a piece of fur, a pumice stone, etcetera? Something obviously different, to see just how specific it really is!" |

Kursten winces as she explains just how bad her scars likely will become. "That's...not a good thing!" He says, objecting to her happy tone of voice when talking about that. "I mean...I guess it's better than just being miserable about it, but you should try to find a way to keep it from getting that bad. At least, I think that's what would make sense..." One thing in particular raises his hackles up. "If? What makes you think you won't live to twenty-five?" He was in a near state of panic by this point. Any thought of testing his own response to stimuli was dashed with the thought of what his new friend would likely be going through. |

"Well, I'll enjoy having more control over it, and being able to do new things. I already live with the side effects of it, so it won't really be so bad." She only realised she'd said something wrong when Kursten began to visibly worry. She shifted nervously, trying to think of what to say. "What, did I say that? Oh, right!" She shook her head and then put her arms around him in a hug. "Don't worry about it, Kursten." she said quietly. She looked up at him with a smile. "I mean, I could fall off a bridge, or get hit by lightning, but it doesn't mean I will. That's all just an if." The hug tightened just a little before she let go. "Heck, I could be completely fine in ten years, I'm just prepared in case I'm not, that's all. Want to get ice-cream downstairs?" |

Kursten blinks as he's suddenly inside a hug, and eventually awkwardly returns it. When she lets him go, he sighs. "I don't know. I don't want to think about what could happen like that. I fully intend to live to a ripe old age, and I'd prefer if you did as well. That's what I think, at least..." He smiles at Destiny. "Thanks for that...I tend to get a little overworked about stuff...and I don't like talking about stuff like that. I really overreacted, I'm sorry." The offer of ice cream was a marvelous subject change, and he grasps on it. "I would, thank you! You guys are being really hospitable...I hope I can return the favor in the future. Right now my house isn't the best, but when I get back home, I'll knock your socks off!" He grins at the thought...that's the goal, to come back home strong enough that any people like those intruders that night would be stupid to try anything. |

"Well, don't you worry about it!" she chirped. "Kursten, If I have my way about things, I'll live so long that everyone will get sick of me instead. Which really, will just give me lots of time to explore and discover stuff, so it's all got its good side!" She just about managed to not let out a sign of relief when Kursten latched onto the change of subject. That probably would have looked looked really bad. "Well, we wouldn't have a good reason to not be hospitable! Oooh, do you like mint ice-cream? We have mint and strawberry and chocolate! You know, the classics! It would be so nice to see your place though, I bet it's just fantastic and it'll be really cool to visit you there!" |

Kursten can't hold back laughter. "I dunno if you could live anywhere close to that long, but I'm all for you trying. You seem way too nice for anyone to get sick of you, though." He rubs the back of his neck. "Well...I find it's harder to be hospitable than otherwise, given you've got to be willing to let me eat your food, use your shower, borrow your clothes...it's really nice of you to do that for me, and I really appreciate it!" When she gives him the list of flavors, he nods. "I'll have mint ice cream...though if you could put a scoop of strawberry in there too, that'd be awesome!" When she talks about his home, he nods eagerly. "Yeah! It's a really huge mansion in the higher tiers of Reliquus, and it manages to be even bigger inside than out! You know...I never thought I'd miss it as much as I do until I had to leave...I hope I'll be able to go back soon. It isn't so bad, but it's a bit rough a transition to make." |

"See, for me to be inhospitable, I'd have to be willing to be neglectful." Destiny said. She sat down in her chair and started to tug on her socks as she continued. And the idea of doing that, especially to a friend... well, I'd have to be a pretty sucky person for that, and I like to think that I'm not." She pulled on her chunky shoes and began to lace them up. "Two scoops of mint and one of strawberry then!" she said brightly, "And it sounds gorgeous! I've never been inside anywhere really grand. I bet it's just got absolutely amazing architecture and everything." She hopped to her feet, wobbled and regained her balance. "You know, if you need anything, I could try help, but I don't know how much use I could be. Still," she added with a giggle, "I'm guessing ice-cream goes a long way to smooth any transition!" She wanted to ask what he meant by 'had to leave', but he hadn't seemed open to that kind of question earlier. Maybe much, much later. After all, it wasn't like she was telling him everything straight away either. Destiny held open the door for him. "You first!" |
