Shopping!; =D

The shop seemed nice enough, for a shop that was nearer to the outskirts than her father considered safe and which also sold objects primarily used to kill people and creatures. The sign above the door read ‘The Drunken Huntsman’ in dirty white letters that furled away from the wood at the edges and it had a list of opening hours taped to the glass door. Destiny checked her wallet, then tucked it safely back into her back and pushed the door open.

The inside smelt like gunpowder and wet dog, which kind of set her at ease. Bad people usually killed their dogs, right? Unless they were crazy dogs... but you can’t run a business with crazy dogs, so she was fine!

With this in mind, she approached the counter and started examining the guns in their glass cases, hands tucked behind her back.

Micah D'Antunno was not having a good day. First, one of his back-alley distributors had decided not to pay up - which wasn't unusual, but it often required Micah to deal with things in person. Now, he'd come to inspect one of his main front companies and discovered that the owner seemed not to have shown up. Only a couple of his subordinates were present, and questioning them had gotten nowhere.

Now, to top it all off, there was no one manning the front counter - a deficiency that he would have to discuss with the owner, whenever the hell they decided to show up. He'd been a bit startled, actually, to hear the old-fashioned bells that let employees know a customer had come in - but when he saw the diminutive girl examining his wares, he almost had to laugh. She was clearly very out of place.

Still, she was a customer. Coming through the door behind the counter, he had to remind himself of that again as he noticed the jewelry she was wearing - and was that pendant made of silver? His wolf grumbled at him, but he pushed it down. In this line of work, one had to expect that people would be openly carrying weapons.

Clearing his throat to get her attention, he smiled gently at her and said, "Welcome to th' Drunken Huntsman. No, we ain't drunk, but our prices might as well be!" He forced himself to chuckle at the painful joke. "How can I help y'all today, hon?"

As Micah addressed, Destiny straightened up and smiled at him. This place didn't just smell familiar, it had familarish sounding voices too! Awesome!

"Wow, sir! You sound like my dad!" she told the guy cheerily. Her own Southern accent was much lighter than Micah's, evident but just barely.

"Not my dad dad, my real dad, obviously." she added, as though that was just a silly idea altogether. "If you sounded like my dad dad then I'd sound like you too, and I don't. Anyways, I'd sure like to buy a gun. A small-calibre handgun, something I can keep in my bag that doesn't kick like a donkey and won't be too hard or expensive to buy ammunition for. Can you recommend anything like that? I have other questions too, but that's the first one!"

'Th' Sam Hill is she on about?" Blinking and slightly taken aback, it takes a moment for Micah to catch up with her request. "Well, I can surely help ya there. One of the things everyone's lookin' for nowadays is concealed-carry."

He taps the glass on top of a case that's filled with smaller, stubby-looking handguns - mostly semiautomatics, but there's a few revolvers in the mix. "We got 'em in everything from .22 Long Rifle up ta .45 Auto - all depends on what you're lookin' to do with it. 'S far as inexpensive ammo goes, I'd recommend stayin' away from 9 mil or .45 - I carry .45 myself, and I have ta load my own sometimes 'cause it's so scarce."

Chuckling, he continues, "'Sides, in a gun this small, .45 is gonna kick worse than a sledgehammer. If'n y'all's lookin' for somethin' what's got low recoil and are willin' ta sacrifice a little range, I'd recommend a .32 ACP. It's not the sort o' round that can reach out and touch someone, but it's got decent stoppin' power at close range and it's not goin' ta give you bruises."

".32 calibre seems good to me." Destiny said, nodding as he spoke. "My other gun was a 9mm that my sister gave me and I had a little trouble with it. She suggested one called... Tomcat, or something like that?"

Thank goodness for having a sister who liked weaponry. Destiny herself wasn't as deeply interested (though they were pretty cool!) but between Tru talking and her own personal project, she'd picked up some small bits of information here and there.

"But the most important thing is availability of parts and how easily it can be taken apart."

She beamed at him. "I'm working on a project, you see. And I kind of have trouble with that part!"

A tinker? Possibly an amateur gunsmith? Micah knew very well the sort of curiosity that drove people to work with complex machines like guns. It was that same curiosity that had caused him to pick up the bent mechanism that would turn out to be his first artifact.

Smiling a bit, Micah nodded. "Well, th' Tomcat's nice 'n simple, alright. It's got some little idiosyncrasies that y'all would do well to watch out for, though. No ejector means ya can't just rack the slide ta pop out a failed round - ya gotta release the barrel, tip it up, and pull it out by hand. It also doesn't have a really safe way ta un-cock it when there's a round chambered, so it's best to carry it without. All that makes it a bit slower than I like, but if y'all aren't expecting to have to use it often it should be alright."

He chuckled, looking the girl over. Shaking his head, he said, "I'll tell ya straight, hon. Gunsmithin' ain't all it's cracked up ta be. Even the weakest round will gladly take advantage of a small mistake ta send the whole thing flyin' apart. But if y'all are just lookin' ta customize yer piece, we'd gladly do it right here for ya. We might even be able ta get it done today, dependin' on how much y'all need changed."

"Th' sounds just fine to me! Apart from my project, it's just for self defence when I'm going to work an' people don't usually try to mug me." Destiny said, not realising she was picking up his accent, her old one, just a bit. She was even pronouncing her Is as Ahs again.

She looked down at her feet and shuffled sheepishly. "I set the last one who did on fire, but I don't want to have to do that again because it was kind hard to avoid giving her third degree burns. I don't want to be responsible for horrific traumatic injuries, I just want to make them leave me th' heckerbeans alone."

She shook her head as he suggested customising it.

"No, that's not what I need. I have to learn how to take one apart an' then put it together an' fully understand it, without it jus' full on exploding in my face because I fucked up something really vitally important in a really terrible way! I'd say that part is probably the second most important part, in fact. I don't mind if it's hard, being a doctor is hard too and I still do that! Though with that, I did get teaching...."

She paused, and then gazed up at him with big, bright and incredibly hopeful eyes. She made a little gasp of excitement at the wonderful idea in her head.

"I have an idea! You can teach me!"

She clasped her hands together, looking at him even more intently. "Please!"

Well, that was unexpected. Setting people on fire? A mage, then? A faint scent of fire and brimstone had followed her into the store, just barely strong enough for his werewolf nose to pick up. Clearly she was more dangerous than she seemed.

Eyebrow raised, Micah sad, "Hon, I hate ta break it to ya, but a gun ain't gonna be much better. Even a .32 if'n it gets in the wrong place will easy kill someone. Y'all ever treated a gunshot wound?"

Though he was having trouble keeping up with her, he'd managed to pick out her mention of being a doctor. It made him wonder - every doctor he knew was far too busy to do much of anything but be a doctor. Her talk of a "project," the way she babbled on, everything about her sent up the warning flags in his mind. People only talked like that when they had something to hide.

On the other hand, everyone had secrets - he knew that all too well. It really wasn't his business, and he really didn't need any more trouble. Still... if she really was a doctor, it could be handy to have that connection. And if she had secrets herself, then she would hopefully understand the need to keep quiet about things. Presuming, of course, she wasn't just completely nuts.

He blinked as she asked him to teach her. He knew just enough about gunsmithing to get himself in trouble, and he didn't fancy getting stuck coming here too regularly. It would be a potential disaster if the wrong person saw him.

On the other hand, there was the matter of those puppy-dog eyes. The wolf in him couldn't help but see her as a little lost cub, dredging up images of scolded puppies to show him what would happen if he said "no."

He sighed. Sometimes, he really hated that his wolf could be fooled so easily. Shaking his head again, he said, "Well, it's against my better judgement to teach ya - but for all I know, y'all'll just go an' find someone else that might not know what he's doing."

Giving her a half-hearted smile, he continued, "Right, then, hon. I'll do it. Just let me see when I can meet with ya. I don't know if the guys here would 'preciate if'n I let some amateur use their equipment, but I got a workshop o' my own at home. Ain't far from here, either. What d'ya say?"

"Yes, sir! I have treated gunshots, an' I know how terrible they can get, especially with the risk of infection, but I still do think they're a little more treatable than being burnt alive, fatal injuries are a little easier to avoid, and the scarrin' is easier to live with too. I rather an assault charge to a manslaughter one, after all! Plus, people are more likely to believe you have a gun than they 'll believe you'll throw fire at them until they go home and really think about their lives."

It took a couple of seconds for his response to her request to sink in.

He said yes?

He said yes!

Destiny let out a happy little squeal and started bouncing in place, her necklace just narrowly avoiding hitting her in the eye once or twice.

"Awesome, wonderful, oooh thank you, thank you!" she gushed. "I better just tell dad so he doesn't get worried! Gosh, I'll have to tell Kursten too, so he doesn't visit expecting me to be at home and get all disappointed and uncomfortable! But still! Thank you, thanks so much! When can we start? I'll pay attention, I promise! I'm a good learner, honest!"

Though he kept a smile on his face, he couldn't help but sigh internally. "I really hope you realize what you're getting me into, cane."

His wolf's response was the image of a wolfy grin. Chuckling, he pulled a small organizer out of his pocket, he flipped through and nodded to himself. Smiling up at Destiny, he said, "Well, I should be free after five today, if'n y'all can do that."
