The shop seemed nice enough, for a shop that was nearer to the outskirts than her father considered safe and which also sold objects primarily used to kill people and creatures. The sign above the door read ‘The Drunken Huntsman’ in dirty white letters that furled away from the wood at the edges and it had a list of opening hours taped to the glass door. Destiny checked her wallet, then tucked it safely back into her back and pushed the door open.

The inside smelt like gunpowder and wet dog, which kind of set her at ease. Bad people usually killed their dogs, right? Unless they were crazy dogs... but you can’t run a business with crazy dogs, so she was fine!

With this in mind, she approached the counter and started examining the guns in their glass cases, hands tucked behind her back.

"That works just fine, but... Hm."

Destiny frowned at this and set through her purse again. After undoing an hitherto unseen zip inside it, she pulled out two
notes, crisp but sharply folded, as though they'd been there and forgotten for at least a month. Presumably it was emergency cash of some kind. She put them down with the other money.

"There. Now it's only forty dollars worth." she said, all happy smiles again. "You've been pretty helpful, Mr Puledri, but I wouldn't like to take advantage of a good nature!"

Micah shakes his head, waving the money away. "Don't worry about it. I said I'd give you a deal, and I ain't one to break a bargain. Don't want you dippin' in ta no emergency money for our sake."

Then he chuckles. Giving her an appraising look, he says, "I think I misread you, Miss Dee. Most o' th' customers what come in here, they's lookin' ta haggle. We ain't used ta havin' someone come in and agree ta everything immediately."

He laughs again and shrugs. "For what it's worth, I think I like this way better. Everyone ends up happier in th' end."

Destiny tucked the money away again. She'd prefer to insist, but some people did get offended at that kind of thing. She shrugged and smiled.

"Well, I wouldn't do it if I thought you were cheating me, but I don't think you are. Besides, you've been really helpful and everything, so I don't have a good reason to turn around and be a jerk about anything. Though for some folks, that's reason enough!"

She did a little wiggle in her shoes.

"Oooh, I'm so excited! I can't wait to practice and work on my project properly!"

Micah laughs. "I think I know what ya mean. Some people, they'll get angry over any little thing."

Pulling another key off the pegboard, he unlocks the display case that makes up most of the counter. He pulls out two boxes marked ".32 Auto" and sets them gently on the glass countertop. Nodding to himself, he says, "There ya go. Sixty rounds of .32 ACP. Jacketed hollowpoint, so you can use it as your carry ammo as well as for practice."

He turns to the kid at the register - who's been watching this exchange nervously - and says, "That's two of the Bremer 65-grain JHP ya want ta put in, Brady. Jus' take it off the gun, boyo, don't worry about it."

As Brady works the register, he turns back to Destiny and smiles again. "He'll have it rung in a moment. Let me just close this up for ya, and we can get a move on."

It only takes a minute for Brady to finish ringing Destiny up, in which time Micah's put away the other gun, closed the display case, and returned the unneeded keys to their pegboard. He's closing Destiny's new purchase up as Brady comes over with the receipt and her change.

Chuckling, Micah finishes locking the case and hands the key to Destiny. "There ya go. She's yours now. Take good care of her, huh?"

Brady offers the receipt and change, and asks, "Would you like a bag for your ammunition, ma'am?"

My, that sure was a whole lot of jargon that Destiny didn't quite understand. She smiled faintly, hoping she'd be able to follow the conversation again at some point, and resolving to ask her cousin what any of it really meant. When Brady offered her the bag, she shook her head as she took her change and receipt, stuffing both into her wallet.

"No thanks, I have my own." she said. She took the two boxes of ammunition off the counter and popped them away into the main pocket of her bag. Then she picked up the gun, which she had left down when Micah passed it to her. She passed it from hand to hand carefully, feeling the difference in it now that it was hers. Then she held it up in both hands (laying flat across both palms, not as though she was aiming) and announced in clear tones, "I dub thee... Leto!"

With that, she put it away into the frontmost pocket and smiled.

"Now that I've named it, I'll be extra careful with it."

"And ya weren't before?" Micah laughs, shaking his head, and continues, "I'd offer ta let ya try it out on the range in th' back, but I thought ya might want ta get on over to th' workshop."

He raises his eyebrow as she names her new pistol, but otherwise doesn't comment on it. His own handgun had never gotten a name - never needed one. It was like a third hand to him, for all it left his side.

"Oh I was, but now it's getting even more care!" Destiny said happily. "I follow the idea that once you name a thing, you give it an identity and that gives it a presence and a feeling in your head, so you treat it different. It doesn't need a name to have that kind of feel, but a name sure helps!"

She patted the bulge in the satchel.

"Do you think Leto is a good name, Mr Puledri? According to a book I read, it means 'hidden one', and I think that suits a handgun that's going to be hiding in my bag a lot! I was going to call it Fenris but I think some of my cousins would get kind of annoyed and call me racist, so I didn't. Oooh, we're going to the workshop right now? That's right, I remember!"

She clapped her hands and bounced. "Awesome!"

Micah shrugs, putting a hand on his hip. His hand settled comfortably on the flap of the holster there, fingers instinctively going to the clasp. "Never did name my carry piece - once I got into th' habit o' carryin' it around, it felt too much like another part o' me for that."

A lopsided grin crosses his face, and he asks, "Now, what's so wrong about 'Fenris?' Big, badass wolf? Ya call it that, any mugger would be terrified if'n they hear you talk about it. Yer cousins are over-sensitive, if ya ask me."

Surely it's a trick of the light, but for a fraction of a second it almost looks like the canine tooth revealed by his smile is a lot longer and sharper than it should be. Before it can sink in, Micah turns to walk through a gate in the counter. Coming up to Destiny, he says, "Yeah, we can go now. I think Brady can handle it from here."

The man behind the counter gives him a nervous nod as Micah turns to him. Smiling, Micah says, "Alright, then. Y'all just let Old Man Falstaff know I'm out for the day, okay?"

Another nod and Micah chuckles. Returning his attention to Destiny, he says, "Right, then. Ya ready?"

“My cousins are also way, way taller than I am, and I’m not allowed to set them on fire, so I don’t really have much of a defence against them. It’s not fair, really, but if you were me, you’d avoid upsetting them too.”

The flash of a tooth was pretty fast, but Destiny caught it. Or at least, she thought she did. There was something odd with his teeth anyway, but maybe it was just bad dentistry? She tilted her head, and didn’t say anything.

She perked up once he came out from behind the counter, moreso when he confirmed that they were going.

“Ready and waiting, Mr Puledri!” she said eagerly, and skipped to the door. She held it open for Micah, and waved to Brady, “Have a good guy! I mean day!”

Micah laughs. "Yeah, I know that feeling. Lookin' at me now, ya wouldn't think I was the runt - but even my sister was bigger'n me as a kid. Couldn't take any of them straight up, so I learned ta use th' one advantage I had: my brain. Got so they were terrified when I was quiet, 'cause they thought I was up to something."

After returning Destiny's wave, Brady turns his attention back to the register, obviously amused. Micah walks to the door, and gives Destiny a little mock-bow as he passes. "Thank ya kindly, Miss Dee," he says with touch of a chuckle.

Walking through the door, he makes an immediate right and starts walking up the sidewalk. He checks once to make sure that Destiny is following, then plunges on, long strides eating up the pavement.

True to his word, they aren't walking for long before he stops in front of a squat, two-story building. The ground floor is taken up by a delicatessen - the name "Angelo's" is scrawled across the glass front of the shop in peeling white script - and the upper story is fronted in what was once sand-colored brick, darkened and slightly dingy with age. There's two glass doors on the ground floor, one leading into the deli and one opening on a little foyer area that leads to a stairwell.

It's the second door that he walks up to, fishing in his pocket for the key. "Here we are," he says, giving Destiny a smile, "Home sweet home. Ain't much ta look at from here, but it's something."

Unlocking the door, he pulls it open amid protests from the hinges. He frowns and mutters, "Gotta take a look at that, I guess. Maybe some grease."

Holding the door open for her, he turns to Destiny and says, "Needs a bit of work." He laughs, and continues, "C'mon in. I'll ask ya ta hold up in th' foyer for a moment, though. Gotta check my mail ta see if any of th' tenants have complained about th' door."
