Kursten walks around the vacant lot that they had chosen for their little arena, making sure there was no interference that would reduce the value of their experiment. When he's satisfied that there are no errant phenomena, he turns back towards the two people who had accompanied him.

"Alright, test area looks good. Are you people ready to start?"

He palms his book...he's never really tried using it in anything even approaching a combat situation...but he's fairly confident that he could reign in the errant thoughts that tended to get in his head as he drew power from it. And it was worth testing...he didn't know nearly enough about the actual effects it produced, most of his work till now was in translation.

"Okay, dictee, note that the test site is as control as anywhere in Reliquus can be. We might want to try the experiment outside of the city later to see if there's any noticeable difference." He takes a breath to steel himself, then nods. "Let's begin."

Tru and Destiny exchanged glances.

"You don't have to-"
"-be so serious about it." Destiny finished, passing the picnic basket and medical kit to Tru with a smile of appreciation. "Though we sure should bring a videocam next time! The only one we had on hand fell in the toilet a week ago.... but hey, it wasn't very good anyway, and we can get a better one! I do have this though!"

She took a chunky, blue dictaphone from her pocket and held it up. The paint on it had rubbed away in places, and the buttons on top had been worn smooth from use.

Tru wandered to a safe distance from the arena, spread out the polka-dot blanket she'd had tossed over her shoulder and flopped down.

"I'll bravely mind our things."

Kursten pouts. "But we need to take this seriously! This is the first time I'm field-testing strange phenomena...under observable conditions, at least. This is a tremendous undertaking..."

He sighs as Destiny informs him of the missed opportunity. "Yeah, a way to visually record the information would be ideal, I'll have to settle for written notes..." It's only then that he notices the odd contraption that Destiny holds up. "...Just what is that thing? It looks cool, is it cool?" Kursten shakes his head. "No, can't get distracted. Test #1 is about to begin, just do..whatever thing it does and get ready."

"It's a dictaphone. an old one but still in good shape." Destiny explained. "It's pretty responsive, and I use it for taking notes when I need to be moving around, so I figured it'd be good for us until we have video!"

She slipped off her white coat, folded it neatly, and set it down on the edge of the arena. She checked the dictaphone, clicked on the Record, and placed it on top of the coat.

She skipped to fifteen feet away from Kursten. She didn't roll up her sleeves, since she was wearing a t-shirt this time, one with a kitten batting at a cloud of bright butterflies.

She flexed her fingers, psyching herself up. Even if Kursten was being kind of dour about it, this was really exciting! And a little scary too, if she had to be honest. Being so fragile meant that she'd never really fought anyone before, not even in a friendly spar, and if she was being honest....

"At the count of three, Kursten?" she asked, smiling brightly and bouncing on her heels.

Kursten tilts his head. "A dictophone...never seen one of those! It sounds like a very useful device, I'll definitely have to get one of my own...when I have some spare money on hand, at least."

Seeing Destiny pull her coat off, he realizes that would be a good idea as well. His own jacket was a horrific patch job if there ever was one, but a bit less needlework wouldn't go wrong. His clothes under that was little more than a white undershirt, if he had been on duty that day, he'd be wearing something nicer to work with his jacket off, but he didn't have any work today.

Taking the book in his hands, he palms through the pages a bit. He knows the initial starter incantation by heart, but he found a few new tricks in translation, and wanted to try them out. Closing the book and holding it in his right hand by the spine, he nods. "Alrighty...one, two...three!" With that, he mutters the phrase under his breath...a phonetic translation would normally be impossible, but for some reason, the words from the book burn in his head. "Renosoratunta! Pohothon! Basakunnas!" Drawing his left arm back, he flicks it out, and it all but explodes, bursting into a mass of sinew and flesh.

Ignoring the desire conveyed through the book to devour just about anything devourable in the area, he nods. "Remember...not trying to hurt." With that, he lashes out with the arm mass, the flesh expanding into tentacles with both suckered, spiked, and pointed ends. "Uhh...might want to dodge that though! I misjudged, think I came on a little strong there!" He tries to reign himself back, but they were already flying. "Go easy on the power...it gets out of hand easily" he says to the dictophone, as a note to himself for later.

Destiny was lucky that she was paying attention, because elsewise that seething mass would have hit her quite fucking hard indeed. Instead, she scampered to the side in the bare nick of time and jammed both of her hands, wrist deep, into the thickest fissures on each opposing arm. She pulled and out came the short, thick fireon chains she had from each one. They hung limp in her hands until her blue flames blossomed from the openings as well, and the chains began drifting in the flames.

She clenched her teeth, and the vibrant blue flickered out, becoming an orangey red flame instead. Not only was this easier for her to physically sustain (though actually harder mentally), but the heat and the flames themselves were much less intense, and they'd hurt Kursten a lot less.

She experimentally whipped out at the ground near Kursten with one flaming chain, testing the length and actual impact.

Kursten breathes out a sigh of relief as Destiny dodges his attack, he'd have to be more careful. Seeing what Destiny does with her flames, he blinks as she pulls out entire chains made out of that fire substance. "Wow, that's aweso..." he catches himself, coughing. "Subject 2 can create massive, pre-constructed quantities of the unnamed solid plasma substance." Ceasing to address the dictaphone, he turns to Destiny. "Why is your fire red no-eep!"

As a flaming chain crashes down next to him, he recoils his tentacles to catch any dirt or ash that flies up at him. Deciding to test the durability of his own substance, he grabs the chain with them. He winces slightly as the tentacles recoil, burning and writhing. "That fire metal is really strong stuff! these things can usually go through whatever...the only substance I tested before with anything close to that effect was hydrochloric acid!"

Trying to throw out a more measured attack, he throws out a smooth tentacle at Destiny...he didn't think that using the more...accessorized tentacles would be a good idea in a testing situation. While the spikes and suckers were of value, he didn't want Destiny hurt. "Okay, testing prehensile qualities of summoned tentacles..." he says, redirecting the single strand of flesh from a straight attack, to one that attempted to wrap around her leg. "Okay, prehensile movement is possible! That's good...I'll need to work on that!"

"It burns less hot when it's re-crap!"

Destiny went down with a yelp and landed hard on her ass. She climbed back to her feet, rubbing her butt with a wince on her face.

"Tentacles very effective at grabbing. And pulling...."

She drew her arm back and lashed out, sending the fiery chain out to strike at the tentacled mass. She wasn't going to aim for Kursten himself, after all.

"Striking!" she called out.

Kursten nods. "Yeah, guess they are. I didn't think I had that much control over them...I should really keep that in mind." If they were actually fighting, he would have to capitalize on something like that trip...but as it was, he was happy to let her climb back up. "That fall wasn't too bad, was it? Should I be more careful?"

As Destiny tosses the chain at the tentacles, he sees a chance to make sure his findings were accurate. Catching the chain in two solid, thick tendrils, he watches them writhe around, burning...but he can keep control over them. Placing the chain down, he recalls the two burnt strings of muscle, and draws out fresh ones. "So it's a matter of control...and they heal very quickly. Sounds reasonable."

He tilts his head a bit. "Were you trying to dictate something? It seemed like you got cut off."

"Oh, don't worry!" she said cheerily. "If I couldn't handle a little bump like that, I'd be long dead by now, from falling out of trees and off tables and out of beds!"

She pulled the chain back, letting it coil in the air like a serpent. She petted it absently as she explained that "I made my fire go red because when it's red, it doesn't burn as hot when it's blue. I figured it'd hurt you less!"

She smiled with visible pride as she said, "It took a lot of practice to make it go blue, but I'm so used to it that it's hard to go the other way instead."

Gripping the end of one chain, she swung it out. The flames washed from it and through the air in a burning wave, following the direction of the swing like a scythe, with her doing her best to make sure it didn't actually hurt him.
