Kursten walks around the vacant lot that they had chosen for their little arena, making sure there was no interference that would reduce the value of their experiment. When he's satisfied that there are no errant phenomena, he turns back towards the two people who had accompanied him.

"Alright, test area looks good. Are you people ready to start?"

He palms his book...he's never really tried using it in anything even approaching a combat situation...but he's fairly confident that he could reign in the errant thoughts that tended to get in his head as he drew power from it. And it was worth testing...he didn't know nearly enough about the actual effects it produced, most of his work till now was in translation.

"Okay, dictee, note that the test site is as control as anywhere in Reliquus can be. We might want to try the experiment outside of the city later to see if there's any noticeable difference." He takes a breath to steel himself, then nods. "Let's begin."

Kursten leans over and pats her on the shoulder. "It's okay, you didn't know. I mean, I probably ended up doing worse the first time I was using the tentacle. A dog barked behind me, and I was surprised and accidentally lodged one in the poor animal's nose, like if he'd sniffed a porcupine!"

He turns to Tru, grinning wide. "You could? That'd be great! If you could round up the cat, we could make sure it wasn't hurt. I really appreciate it, Tru!" He had a slightly difficult time picking up sarcasm.

Kursten nods, finding the paper. First he'd want to make a visual examination, sometimes ink looked remarkably different from liquid to dry. Hearing Destiny's next request, he rummages a bit more, picking up the gloves and pen, and handing them over to her. "Here you go." He says, watching intently. It was so fascinating watching her like this, he could scarcely believe the happy-go-lucky girl he was glad to call his friend could get so efficient and businesslike. It was really impressive.

Tru gave Kursten an odd look before lying back and putting her arm over her eyes. Arrest the cat? Did he think she had teeny little kitty handcuffs, or jurisdiction over pussy cats?

...that would be pretty awesome, but no.

Destiny left the used gloves in a little bloody pile away from her (but within reach, in case the cat returned in a fit of pique and got hungry) before taking the paper and pen with her clean hands. She put them to the side for a moment and began to clean her scalpel (which was unusual in that it was all one piece of metal, moulded to fit her hand, instead of a plastic grip with a blade attached) with a small flare of fire. For a few seconds, the bright blue flame went dark as it came in contact with the black blood, flickering back once the last of the stuff was gone. Destiny wiped the scalpel on the hem of her jeans and ran it through the flames once again for good luck.

She loved being a pyrokinetic. It was so hygienic!

She put on fresh gloves, and using the scalpel (cleaning it when appropriate) she took blood samples from each, saturating pieces of filter paper completely with blood from each tentacle, then slipping each piece into its own little plastic bag, along with a small plastic ball with silica gel inside

"My dad showed me how to do this when he was still alive." she said as she worked, "The first thing he ever showed me how to do, actually."

She paused, then added with a laugh,"My biological dad, not Harry. It's probably a good thing I clarified, or you'd else think something awful had happened since you visited!"

He blinks as Tru covers her face with her arm, it seemed like she wasn't going to go get the cat. Well, that was a shame, he wanted to make sure the cat was okay.

Waiting as Destiny cleaned up the pile of dissected tentacle with her flame, he couldn't help but be impressed. Having practical purposes for her supernatural power was so cool, he hoped he could feel as comfortable and natural with his powers to be able to do that one day. He had a few ideas, but aside from reaching high and hard to reach places while no one else was around, he never really got around to doing it much.

Watching her store the blood in paper contained in plastic bags, he grew a bit anxious. "So, are we taking those back to a lab or something? Tell me when they're all dry, I want to compare it to something."

He blinks. "Really? That's nice. Did you do it together? Those must be nice memories." He blinks. "No, I didn't think you meant Harry. You did talk about your father earlier...if you did mean Harry, I'd assume you'd be a bit more sad right now."

"It takes several hours for them to dry sufficiently." Destiny told him, "If you want, we can leave them overnight, and then we can do them in the morning. I'll be opening up the clinic, and I don't mind doing it a little early so that it'll be just us, without any interruption."

There was a snigger from the direction of the picnic blanket, muffled by the sniggerer's head being in a basket of sandwiches. She pulled her head out to comment on Kursten's last remark.

"No, she wouldn't."

"Don't make me throw the spiky one at you, Tru." Destiny said in a sing-song way.

"Oh please, you wouldn't dare risk spoiling the sandwiches."

"Like I'd be so careful of anything you made."

Tru thought about this.

"...in fairness, neither would I."

The two sisters laughed, this kind of back-and-forth sniping apparently both common and friendly, and Destiny looked back up at Kursten, smiling widely, back to her usual self.

"I'm sorry, I'm really used to people forgetting what I say, not to mention that a lot of folks do get confused. Or they think dad is gay, that happens a lot too. Quite a lot, actually. It's kind of weird!"

She tilted her head, still looking at him. "I should have remembered that you wouldn't get confused or anything though. You're really smart."

Tru held aloft a bag of doorstop thick sandwiches in victory.

Kursten considers it. "I should be able to get off work tomorrow. I'll see if the other reference librarian is able to take my shift, she's been wanting more hours anyway." He grins, just one more day, and then he'll be closer to knowing what all this means.

He heard muffled breathing coming from Tru, and looked over to her, concerned. "Tru, are you okay?" When she pulled her head out and teased her sister, he takes cover against the slings and shots of their sisterly sniping, not wanting to get caught in crossfire.

When it seemed to die down, he stood back up, brushing himself off. "Huh. Why wouldn't people listen to what you say? You're a doctor, after all...I'd think that'd command respect." His eyes widen a bit. "Well...I don't know your dad, so it's hard to say. Or did you mean Harry there? I don't think so, that seems hard for me to believe."

When she compliments him, he rubs the back of his neck, trying his darndest not to blush and failing. "I'm not really that smart...I figure you know a lot more about all this than I do. I just read and follow instructions mostly...the fact that I can read more than most is kinda tangential." When something starts smelling...well, he wouldn't say appetizing, but food-related, he turns, seeing Tru holding the sandwiches. "Is it time to eat now?" He asks.

He was going to come over tomorrow then? Great! And at the clinic too, which meant that she’d get to show him where she worked. She liked the clinic. And... well, if truth be told, she liked the idea of showing off, just a little bit.

She giggled when she realised he’d been hiding to avoided the joking between her and Tru, but decided not to bring it up though; he seemed to have enough trouble not feeling awkward at the best of times.

“People don’t listen to me much when they know me,” she said cheerily. “Or they just don’t understand what I’m saying. There are super few people that can keep up with me when I’m in full gear, and I usually am! Patients are different though, I don’t confuse patients so much, on account of them really needing to hear what I say, and to know exactly what is it that I’m saying. Other’n that...”

Destiny shrugged.

“And it was both dads, actually. It’s on account of dad being very sweet and shy when he was alive, I guess kind of like you, and dad – Harry dad – because he’s a single dad with no girlfriend. I think that’s very flimsy reasoning, but that’s what I’ve been told by people. I guess they just don’t have any common sense at all.”

She smiled brightly as his cheeks flushed red(dish). He looked better when he blushed. It gave him a little more natural colour, like the shower had.

“Being able to following instructions is still smarter than most people I’ve met.” She said. “I’ve seen people that couldn’t put together a potato alarm clock, even with a how-to guide that was like a pop-up picture book. Besides, you know lots more about magic than I d-ooh, beef! And cheese!” she exclaimed as Tru passed over a bag of sandwiches to her. Tru tossed Kursten a bag, these ones being chicken and ham.

So, in answer to his question, it probably was time to eat.

Kursten tilts his head as he listens to her. "It doesn't seem that hard...all you really have to get used to is the way you can kind of swing from one subject to another. It doesn't seem that bad to me." He grins a bit. "And hearing that most people don't have common sense doesn't really come to me as a surprise..." He ponders that a bit. "Well, I suppose if I honestly cared about how I came off to people, I'd be worried they thought I was like that. I mean, I don't really have a girlfriend either, and your biological dad sounds a bit similar to me...hrm, but I'm too busy for that! And I'm sure my parents will be real bothers about it, so it's not worth considering."

He laughs a bit at her jab at people not able to follow instructions. "Believe me, I know. Libraries can be confusing, but when I give them a location down to the last turn and decimal notation, and they come back to me no less than three times, well...at least I know I'm not being paid for nothing!" As Destiny is distracted by the marvelous smell of food, Kursten takes out sandwich of his own, and begins munching. It was better than he expected it would be, and tries to take his eating slowly, but ends up devouring his in a matter of seconds. "Well...that was nice." He says, before taking out another. He was hungry after getting that much usage from his power. Not quite as bad as the last time it had been used, but still.

Destiny smiled as Kursten said she wasn’t so hard to follow. Easy for him to say now, but she still remembered that deer-in-headlights look when she’d first opened her mouth. Though maybe getting hit by a car had been part of that....

She shook off the tangent to listen to what he was saying, coming back in at an odd time.

“I don't think you're gay!” she blurted out. Tru raised both eyebrows. Destiny paused.

“I mean... are you?”

Maybe he was, and she’d just really offended him. She really hoped she hadn’t, because he might not even get mad about it, and instead just look really hurt, like the time she’d tripped over the neighbour’s puppy when she was seven. It hadn’t even barked, but it’d looked and sounded so unhappy with her for two weeks afterwards that she’d ending up crying in their yard while trying to bribe it with biscuits in an attempt to make it like her again.

“That’s a silly excuse.” Tru said. She wolfed down half her sandwich in one bite and said, mouth full, “You’re never too busy to get laid. Do you just not get asked out or something?”

"Tru, I'm not certain, but I think you're implying something and I don't think it's nice either."

Kursten grins, nodding. "I'm not, thank you! I was just noticing how you said your fathers give off that impression to some people based on their traits, and I kind of have both of those traits on me right now." He turns to Tru, then back to Destiny. "Is something wrong? You're both kind of staring...I hope I didn't say something weird..."

He winces as Tru derides his excuse. "H-Hey, I am busy! I spend most of my time either at the library working or in my apartment studying the grimoire...when I'm not with you two at least." He frowns. "I don't really get asked out, but I don't really come into contact with a lot of people. Usually the only women I talk to are the other people at the library and you two, and most of the people who work at the library are considerably older than I am."

He turns to Destiny, and nods, before turning back to Tru. "Yeah, I don't really like you insinuating I'm lazy...I put a lot of effort into this!"

"That's such a relief!" Destiny chirped.

So he wasn't gay after all, which meant he wasn't going to make her cry through the sheer power of hurt woobieism! Yay!

Tru just looked confused.

"You put in a lot of effort... to not have sex? What are you, some... celibate librarian cultist?"

"Do those even exist?"

"I don't know. They might, if he's one."

"Well, I'm pretty sure Kursten isn't a cultist at the very least." Destiny said. She looked over at him, "You're not, right? I mean, we don't have a problem if you are, it's just that it'd be good to go, in case you'd prefer to get a sacrificial goat for your birthday instead of a cake or something!"
