Kursten walks around the vacant lot that they had chosen for their little arena, making sure there was no interference that would reduce the value of their experiment. When he's satisfied that there are no errant phenomena, he turns back towards the two people who had accompanied him. "Alright, test area looks good. Are you people ready to start?" He palms his book...he's never really tried using it in anything even approaching a combat situation...but he's fairly confident that he could reign in the errant thoughts that tended to get in his head as he drew power from it. And it was worth testing...he didn't know nearly enough about the actual effects it produced, most of his work till now was in translation. "Okay, dictee, note that the test site is as control as anywhere in Reliquus can be. We might want to try the experiment outside of the city later to see if there's any noticeable difference." He takes a breath to steel himself, then nods. "Let's begin." |

"Well...you probably wouldn't be, I only get that because of what I work with! Working with pre-Deist artifacts tends to involve a lot of interplanar beings, and mindflayers are relatively low-level ones!" He attempts to alleviate any worries she has...but maybe he shouldn't. After all, if she was worried, she'd take better care of herself...oh well. He tilts his head at her explanation of things. "Well, that's good, at least. I don't think you'd do well with an arranged marriage, you're not used to the idea, and you have certain ideas of what you want! And you've thought a lot about it...and you have a goal for yourself. I think your plans sound great!" He smiles a bit at the encouragement, and nods. "Thanks, Destiny, I appreciate that." As Destiny explains the location of Syl's library, he tries to identify the location, or at least keep track of how to get there. "Well, that's good for her. And really....high class people aren't hard to be friends with, at least, I don't think so. After all, I'm here, aren't I?" He tilts his head a bit. "Then again...I'm not exactly living a high class life now, but oh well." He smiles a bit at her glowing description of her. "Well that's wonderful, we can never have enough nice people in the world." Tru's accusation gets more pointed, no pun intended, and Kursten blinks. "Umm...Jealous of him and Destiny?" He thinks about that a bit. "Well, we're both friends with her...and I don't mind Destiny having more than one friend." He racks his brain a bit more. "If that isn't it...Destiny, are you and Aldo in a relationship? I didn't think so, because of how you seem undecided about it. But if I'd be jealous of that, then that means...." Kursten blushes so hard, he looks like an average person with a medium sized blush. "Y-You think I...Erm....Well, I don't...think that's the case? I mean...I never worried about that, at least..." He wasn't sure if he was coming off intelligibly, but he was trying, darn it. |

“Well, if I did get attacked by them, I’d cover myself in fire until they went away. If you like, I could watch you do it sometime, and help protect you! I don’t like the sounds of the name though. Mindflayer sounds terribly unpleasant, and it kind of makes me wonder if their original name was brainfuckers, which is even more unpleasant!” Destiny fidgeted, trying to think of how to word the difference between him and Syl properly. “You’re a different kind of high class.” she said finally. “Kind of... an approachable kind! I mean, Syl’s all posh but nice to talk to, but you’re not really posh, even though you kind of are, I guess... You don’t have gold-trimming, but you have fancy font!” She giggled as he stumbled over what his declaration of non-jealousy. She got what he meant, but it was still a little adorable to see. Tru, on the other hand, looked downright insulted at what he was saying. “What, you think my sister is ugly? Well, she thinks you’re not too good-looking yourself, and she wouldn’t date your ass either!” Destiny gasped in horror. “Tru, I didn’t say that, not any of that!” “So you would?” Now it was Destiny's turn to go wildly red at an accusation. “I didn’t say that either!” |

Kursten turns a little bit green, which mixes with the red in a very colorful kind of way. "They...they are rather unpleasant. And...if you'd like, I guess you could do that...but I know how to do summonings properly and I can protect myself. Still...seeing one of those things roasted sounds kind of fun to watch." It was immediately obvious he had a very deep-seated hatred of those extraplanar beings. He considers that, nodding after a bit. "Yes, I suppose I'm not exactly posh...I was always taught to speak precisely. Then again, I also had to try and keep the peace, as well as not seem impertinent...and well, it's rather hard to balance! I try my best though, I don't think I've done too poorly for myself." However, Tru didn't let up, his blubbering had no effect, and only seemed to get her more upset at him. "I...I never said that! I would never say that! Destiny is very pretty, I just wasn't jealous of anyone! She said Aldo was a friend...just like I'm a friend! I don't see what the problem is!" He's pretty obviously racking his brain to try and come up with a way out of this, and it was a miracle he was able to keep speaking. He frowns. "And I know I'm not exactly in the best shape, but there's no reason to be huffy about it..." He says, scowling to himself. His research into the book had taken a good deal of his appearance, criscrossing white scars over his body, pale skin, white hair...none of it good. But having it thrown in the face wasn't fun. It's then that he realizes that Destiny is protesting as well. "W-Wait, you don't? I thought everyone would...that's strange." |

“Well, I don’t mind taking part in roast-based therapy sometime, if you ever feel like it!” Destiny offered, apparently deciding that if Kursten didn’t like these extraplanar creatures, they probably deserved swift, unexpected, and repeated immolation. “For fuck sake, do you have to be so nicey-nice all the time?” “Tru, you’re doing it again! I’ve asked you not to do this, and you’re at it again!” Destiny said, with none of the usual lightness or gentle tone that she usually had when reproaching her sister. “Stop it, please. You’re just being cruel now, and he’s not the only getting upset here.” Tru harrumphed, demonstrating perfectly that she was the youngest child after all. “Hey, I’m your sister.” She muttered. “You should be defending me.” “I’m not defending anyo-oh fuckerbutts, I get it now!” Destiny’s face lit up. “You’re the one being jealous! Tru’s made a face and looked away. "Oh, don’t even try pull that on me.” She said roughly. “That- that’s quack level psychology, and you know it! Like anyone would be jealous of... of Tall, Pale and Whiny over there!” “Tru, I said fucking STOP!” There was a little moment of silence, and then Destiny sighed. “Y-you need to go to work now,” she said quietly. “We’re not going to be able to talk with this kind of mood and you’re going to keep being nasty to Kursten until he leaves, so... so you should go, and we’ll talk tonight. Please?” Tru looked between Kursten and Destiny, and then got to her feet. She muttered a rough “Sorry.” to him, and then stomped off, apparently sulking. Destiny waited for her to go before she shuffled over to Kursten on her knees, flopped against him, and hugged tightly. She clung for a moment before she straightened up and examined his face to see just how upset he was. “Are you okay?” she asked with concern, though trying not to make a big deal out of it in case it just made it worse. “I’m really sorry, she didn’t mean any of that! I swear, Tru thinks you’re nice, she just has a bad temper about some things, and she doesn't stop once she's started.” She paused as his previous compliment finally registered in her head. Then she hugged him again. “And thanks for calling me pretty. I don’t think anyone who wasn’t trying to make me feel better has said that before.” She smiled at him. “And despite what Tru said, I don’t think you look awful. ...and I’m not trying to make you feel better either. Though I hope you do, and I’m really sorry I didn’t manage to control the situation in time. If you stay, we can find some way to cheer up properly!” She looked at him with big, hopeful eyes. Oh, she’d give him all her granola and calorie bars tomorrow if he’d cheer up now! |

Kursten rubs the back of his shoulders. "I...think I'm good, Destiny. Thanks for the offer though." He didn't think he'd need to see one again, at least for a long time, and there was no need to tempt fate. Still, Tru seemed to get on their case again, and he gets quiet and defensive. "D-Do you two have to fight like this? I'm fine, if I did something wrong, I deserve it, I don't mind being yelled at. Let's just not argue, alright?" Kursten was used to being the one on the butt end of arguments, he didn't mind. But the last thing he wanted was continued yelling like this. His words didn't have a real effect, however, and he just observes the two of them going at it, wincing slightly whenever the conversation shifts to him. Eventually, a decision is reached, and Tru ends up leaving. "I...hope you have a good day at work! I really mean it..I'm sorry I made things difficult." As she walks away, he sighs, and sits down with a thump, looking down and feeling rather depressed. He starts when he finds a tight pressure around him, and turns to see Destiny giving him a really tight hug. "H-Huh?" Kursten asks, surprised, before smiling softly. "Thanks, Destiny." He says. He's still a bit upset about what happened, but that did cheer him up. He nods firmly at Destiny's proclamation at her sister. "I know. She seems like a really good person, just like you and your father. We all have problems...and I know I stumble over myself. I'm not surprised she'd get frustrated with me. I don't really mind." As she hugs him again, his eyes widen, and when he finds out the reason for it, his blush returns with a vengeance. "Umm...well, I...I didn't want Tru to get the wrong idea about what I thought. You don't need to be so...thankful, I guess. It's really nothing..." When she compliments him in return, his blush manages to find a way to deepen, and he shakes his head. "Well...thanks! I mean...I kind of agree more with Tru about that, like I said...but if you think so, I won't complain." He shakes his head firmly. "It wasn't your fault, Destiny. And yeah, I'd be happy to find a way to cheer Tru up later! I know I didn't put my best foot forward, and I'd love a chance to make amends for things! Just tell me what I can do!" |

Destiny sat herself on her heels, hands in her lap. She started playing slaps on her knees as she talked. “It... it started with the ‘some things are meant to happen’ comment. We both know you didn’t mean it like it came across, but... it’s pretty sore for us. Both of us.” She looked down at her hands, and started twisting them together. She wasn’t used to thinking about her words so much. By now, most of what she said just came easily; having to pick and choose word carefully was almost alien, even when she used to do it all the time. “I mean... it was really tactless, but I get why you said it! I’d say something like that too, if I wasn’t so used to all my family and stuff! And you were really good too. I’ve seen Aldo and Erin both say stuff to Tru, and the argument kept going for hours between them, and I couldn’t do a thing to stop them. I mean, nothing can really stop her when she starts, but it didn’t go really awful like it might have.” She beamed at him. “So you actually did a little better than you thought you did. And... thanks for not hating her for it.” She giggled as he went super-red (what counted as super-red for him anyway), and couldn’t help but to reached up and ruffle his hair affectionately. "Well, I think your looks are... unusual but artistic. Like... I won’t say Dali or Picasso or something, because that gives the wrong impression, but I still think you look nice! Like these paintings were everything is in black and white except for a few things or people that were in full bright colour! But the reverse of that! And white hair is very mysterious!” She drew herself up to her proper height (well, as much as possibly while kneeling comfortably), still dwarfed by him. “Besides, if you’re allowed to say I look handsome, I’m allowed to call you pretty! ...wait.” She thought about what she said and grinned. “It’s close enough! And I know she’ll appreciate whatever you do as well! I just have to explain that I’ve got time for everyone. Did you know that some people think twins are one soul that got split into two people? So I guess some folks just worry when the other half of them looks like they won’t have time for them. That’s nothing I can’t solve!” |

Kursten looks up, staring at the sky. "Well...that's probably something I got from my parents. They hung out with the Unbroken Chain folks a bit, they're very much into the whole "everything happens for a reason, fate dictates everything" thought...Not sure if I buy that myself...but it seemed like the right thing to say." He sighs dejectedly. "Obviously it wasn't." He looks up at her, wincing. "You mean she argues more than that? I can't even imagine....she was really digging in deep. I'd hate to see what happens when she really gets going..." The idea honestly terrifies him a bit. "Still...if you think I did good...I guess I'll accept that." He smiles softly, growing a bit more comfortable. "I couldn't hate her for it...she's a nice person. And hey, I screwed up here too...I just hope she doesn't hold a grudge." He shakes his head as she compliments him. "Well...it'd probably seem a lot more artistic if it wasn't something directly affecting me...I've been examined by magi who focus on healing, and they confirmed I'm not losing life energy or anything...but having my appearance changed like this was kind of freaky. I'm not sure I like it...so I'm fine being called out on it. If it gives me power that'll help my family though, I'm fine with it." He looks up at her, tilting his head. "You really think that's the problem? Not that I spoke out of turn like an idiot? Well..if you're sure...it'd explain why she went off on that whole jealousy tangent..." He lets out a heavy sigh, his blush had diminished most of the way, but a little bit of red was still there. "I don't get that, anyway...why did she push that so much. It was really embarrassing..." |

"No one in my family believes in fate or destiny or anything like that. If they did, I would have a real name!” Destiny couldn’t help giggle a little. “Actually, my dad told me that if you name someone for a virtue, they’ll end up being the opposite out of contrariness. His middle name was Valiant, by the way. He had trouble killing spiders.” She shrugged. “It’s pretty bad when she gets going, but it doesn’t happen too much anymore, so we recover from it really easy now! We’ve been doing our best not to act like kids for a long time. Happy moods are exceptions, of course!” There was another laugh and then a little bounce as she thought of something. “Oooh! Do you think you ask one of those mages to look at me?” she asked. She looked at him eagerly. “It's not anything serious, you needn’t worry," she added, lying right though her sunny smile. "There’s just something small I’d like to check, and magic might be more precise for it than the means I have. Don’t worry, it’s fine if you don’t or can’t, I just wanted to ask!” Answering why Tru had pushed the jealousy line so much was pretty easy, Destiny didn’t even need to think about that one. She also noticed that the blushiness was fading. "I guess she did it because it worked? You pushed her button, so she pushed yours, and Tru usually figures that if she gets a reaction, she’s probably right. So she kept going with it because the more squiggly you got, the righter she was! I have to say though, I like your button a lore more than hers! Shouting is a lot less fun o deal with than someone going all blushy-blush and stammering. Who know, maybe she just kept going because you’re cute when you’re flustered!” |

Kursten shrugs. "Hey, not knocking you for that. I'm just saying...well, I guess it's an excuse. And another thing my parents taught me was never to make excuses, so...I dunno." He laughs at the description of her father. "He sounds like an alright kind of guy. I dunno about what he said, though...I'd probably try to live up to the name. It all comes down to what kind of person you are, I guess." He smiles a bit. "I...think I can see that. But it's also kind of tough to imagine you outside of a happy mood..the closest you seemed to get was when you were telling Tru to leave, and even then, you bounced back quick." His grin widens. "But then, that's a good thing, I guess." He blinks at her question, but nods eagerly. "Sure, I can do that! I dabble a bit myself, but there are a lot of people you could talk to. Heck, you could probably just go to the academy and ask a student to do one, but if you want a pro...yeah, I might be able to take you!" There was only one person he could really ask with his current situation, financial and otherwise, but he was a good person. Or at least, Kursten thought he was. As she teases him, a light blush returns, but he's more ready to combat it. "Hey, don't just say stuff like that, knock it off..." He sighs a bit. "She just went out and implied things that weren't true...at least, I don't think they are, and some of them were embarrassing. Who wouldn't react to that?" He smiles a bit. "Still, you're right. Just about anything is better than shouting." |

Destiny resisted the urge to say there was a difference between a reason and an excuse. Between that and the arranged marriage thing, it might have seemed kind of anti-his parents, and that’d just be no thank you. “I don’t want to live up to my name, and I don’t think I could either. They should have named me Summer, I could totally do that one!” she said and laughed. “And hey, it’s just a lot easier to be happy! I mean, if I was sad about every bad thing in life, I’d be sad all the time, and just getting sadder because I’d be Also probably bothered by of all the people telling me to smile or going ‘are you okay’ and stuff, that stuff gets really old. I already get told to ‘eat a sandwich’ and stuff, which is silly. They’re not even filling unless they’re thicker than the DSM V.” She blanched at the idea of him being the one to do the examination. She remembered his reaction back at the house, when he’d panicked over her saying ‘if’ she made it to 25. “I’d prefer a professional, type please.” She said quickly, and then just as quickly backtracked. “No offence or anything! I’m sure you’re really good! Just that my dad always told me to go to a professional for stuff like this!” She panicked internally for a moment, but soon as he said yes, she bounced again and glomped him, her face smooshing right against him. From then on, what she was saying was fairly muffled, but that didn’t stop her talking. “And I’ll try not to make you blush, but I don’t promise anything! I won’t say anything mean to do it, but it is really fun! I’ll try be nice though.” She let him go with a big smile, then stopped as a few stray thoughts that’d been piling up for a while collided together and made a couple connections in her brain. “Hey, Kursten, did something happen with your family? Because you’ve said stuff before about not being able to see them, or saying ‘when’ you go back, and you don’t seem to much like what the book’s done to your looks, but you’re considering it a decent trade-off if you can protect them, and that’s usually not an attitude that comes from nowhere.” |
