"Uh huh! They rip right open and fire appears! Hold a second and I'll give you a demonstration!" Destiny opened the packets of spaghetti and put one and a half of them into the boiling water and poured in salt after. Then she brushed off her hands, turned around and held out her arm, wrist up. She took a deep breath and focused like she always did, and the painful looking fissures parted. Blue fire flowed out from them, flicking up to the ceiling with very little spread outwards. Something about it gave the eerie sense that it was alive, and also... enthusiastic. "It's not actually just pyrokinetics though," she said, looking at Kursten apologetically, "it's just that we're the most common. My sister does plants and rocks, so she is a really, really good gardener. She beamed. "I suppose that's why she works as one!" |

Kursten looks up at the fire, amazed. He'd seen her flames before, but there was always something unique about them he couldn't place...it'd be eerie if it wasn't so fascinating. Turning to Aurora, he wipes his forehead, the temperature in the room was a bit higher. "Speaks for itself, doesn't it?" At Destiny's correction, he nods eagerly. "Right, right, of course. Totally slipped my mind, sorry. Yes, there are all kinds of effects, but I mostly focused on the pyrokinesis as it should be the easiest to prove. The other powers that manifest should be kept on a list as well, and can be looked into after I'm done with the pyrokinesis." Back to Aurora, he grins. "If you want any greater display of the technique, I'm sure Destiny would be happy to show you. If not, you can take a look at the proof I've drawn up for a theory on how it happens. The energy definitely comes from somewhere...part of it's drawn from her caloric intake, but it's not just that. If anything, that seems more a supplement, similar to an electric transformer supplementing energy lost in conduction." Kursten draws out a few more sheaves of paper, filled with arcane diagrams. What can be made clearly out, however, is an overlap. "From what I could tell, the fire itself doesn't come from here, or the world. If I'm right, Destiny could be tapping into an alternate, elemental plane!" Edited by Smitejr, May 9 2015, 01:39 PM.

Aurora winces as the fissures in Destiny's arms split wider. And then the flames come, and she has to suppress a jump out of shock. Still, she listens to Kursten's explanation in silence, digesting as much of it as she can. As he finishes, she nods. "I see. I suppose that's not theoretically impossible; after all, the gods existed on a separate plane. Hmm..." She turns to Destiny, eyes unable to leave the cracks in her arms. "And this... runs in your family or something? And, um, that looks painful, so I... think I'll forgo further demonstration." |

Destiny petted the flames, the fire shifting under her fingers like a pleased cat, and nodded excitedly. "All my sisters have this kind of ability, so did my mom, and so do my cousins! So what I'm trying to say is that yes, it's definitely in our blood!" She smiled at Aurora's concern and giggled. "Oh, it doesn't hurt!" she reassured her. "Well, it doesn't right now! It can but it really just looks far worse than it is unless I use it for very long and then I feel like I'm burning alive but that's okay because I have painkillers for that! Besides, I have more stuff to show you!" She pulled back the fire into her arm but left the fissure open. She steadied her hand, then plunged it into the opening, wrist deep. Given how thin and pale her arm was, you'd be forgiven for almost expected her hand to show through the skin on the other side, but instead it just kind of... disappeared in there. She groped around thoughtfully for a bit and pulled out a blue, translucent oblong. "I put that in earlier so I could demonstrate doing that!" she explained brightly, pulling out her hand."It was that or chains and I figured they'd take up too much space in the room!" Kursten nods as Aurora brings up the Gods. "Yes, exactly! It was the main explanation I came up with after examining the energy. The fire came out of energy that is decidedly not a part of any discernable system: it's free!" His brows furrow. "Now anyone will tell you: You can't make something out of nothing. It's impossible. So that leaves us with the simple fact that she's taking energy from some system that we can't observe. I have a few alternate hypotheses: human solar battery being the chief among them, but that doesn't explain why we can't detect it until it's released as fire." Kursten winces as Destiny brings up pain. "Please, let us know if we're pushing you too hard with this. The last thing I want is for you to be hurt." His wince nearly evolves into a vomit as she all but rummages around inside of her arm looking for the oblong. Turning to Aurora, he shrugs. "And then...well, and then there's that. Pretty clear corroborating evidence. As you can probably tell...that's essentially solid fire. No, I can't explain it, it all but defies explanation, but it's there. |

"You... really shouldn't just rely on painkillers for..." Trailing off, Aurora can't help but cover her mouth as she watches Destiny dig into her own hand for the oblong, her stomach twisting at the sight. Despite her disgust, she manages to listen to everything Kursten says. With a nod, she eyes the oblong. "I see... would it be alright if I examined... that, Miss Emeralt?" |

Destiny shook her head. "Not without proper equipment," she said apologetically. "I mean, it is still fire, and while I could put you out real fast and take care of the burns, I'd really rather you not catch fire at all! She petted the oblong back into the open fissure and neatly avoided the topic of pain with a chirpy, "But I could probably give you a sample to take with you! And ooh, I like the idea of being solar-powered!" |

Kursten rubs the back of his neck sheepishly. "Yeah, I did that on accident. Probably would've scarred up my hand way more than it already is if I wasn't able to do what...well, I do. Fire's pretty hot." With that statement of the obvious, he tilts his head. "You can transport samples? Darn, if I had a proper lab..." His ruminations are cut off by a shake of his head, then turns to Aurora. "Well, in a nutshell that's what we're especially needing from you. With the Academy's facilities we could move these diagrams forward from just conjecture...as well as get them in a format that would be appropriate for submission to the current academic body. While I've got faith in my homeschooling, there's been a few bumps in it." Kursten sighs. "I can never remember exactly how you're supposed to cite tertiary sources..." |

Aurora winces, but nods. "R-right. I should have guessed..." And her stomach churns again as Destiny shoves the solid flame back where it came from. She turns to Kursten and smiles. "Alright, I can do that. Although, um... do we have a way to safely move a sample to the Academy? If not, I could return later." |

"Oh, I keep them in a special flask," Destiny said brightly. "I can give you what I've got, since I can always make more. Also, I have two flasks!" She turned back to the pasta and checked it, then beamed and looked over her shoulder at Kursten. "Kursten, could you fetch the bowls from the shelf to my left, please? I don't want to go get a chair," she said, kneeling down to get the colander from under the sink. "And storing the firemetal is pretty easy. As long as what you have it in is fireproof, you should be just fine! Unless you're really, really clumsy!" |
