The sun beat down on the rocky wasteland, miles from the nearest outcrop of civilization. Here, a river once flowed, carving the sandstone. Vegetation once flourished by its banks, the coast a haven for wildlife. Now, it was bone-dry badlands, rugged and uninviting. Nothing could live here; thus it was no different from most of the world. Aurora wiped the back of her hand across her forehead, and reached for her canteen, hanging half-empty at her hip. She stood on the first of many steps leading up to a small temple; a shrine to Firma in the distant past, judging by the blocky architecture and use of granite rather than softer materials for its construction. But now, it was a mere ruin, decayed by time and baked underneath this blasted sun. With a smirk to spite her harsh surroundings, Aurora turned toward the older woman beside her and began to slip her backpack off to the ground. "These the ruins we're looking at this time, professor?" |

'Unless you have a more promising location that you've kept hidden all this time,' her professor replied in a friendly tone as she tied her hair into a loose bun. She had forgone her usual pencil skirt and blouse in favour of a shirt and sturdy trousers more suited to the situation. She gave Aurora a fond smile. 'Which, if you have, for shame.' She surveyed the area, then indicated a flat spot nearer to the entrance, though far enough away that they wouldnt risk falling rubble in thr worst case scenario. 'We'll set up camp here, pet, and get a headstart on the investigation today before the rest join us. Are you alright with that?' |

"Yes, ma'am!" Aurora laughs as she kneels down to pull a tent from her bag. "And if I knew a better spot, I'd have mentioned it by now. I've never been this far outside of Reliquia before." After setting the soft mat of the tent down, she rolls over and lies down on it. Such a long trip had exhausted her, so what harm was there in a moment's respite? "Anything in particular you're expecting from this place, or is it beyond even what my illustrious professor knows of?" |

Jehassa shrugged off her bag as well, rolled out her own mat and sat on it lotus-style. "Not any particular item, pet, no, but I have heard a few rumours," she said, stretching her arms up. "Supposedly it's a shrine to Firma, as I'm sure you've noticed already, but the few people who've been there before us remarked on several... odd features deeper inside. Some of them are, frankly, architecturally impossible, which means that if they're legitimate, there's pretty strong magic at work. And my sources are reputable, which means it's worth a look." |

A chill runs down Aurora's spine, but at the same time, excitement courses through her veins. "Ooh, that's interesting. Hope that 'architecturally impossible' doesn't equate to 'impossible to navigate'. Like it seems to for the most part." She sighs and closes her eyes. "Always a disappointment when that happens; it's no fun to get shut out from the good stuff." |

"That's why I'm on this one, pet," Jehassa said and gave her a small smile. "I know what you mean though. I remember my first dig. We were only there for three days before we were blocked off from further progress by a cave-in, and the tunnel turned out to be impossible to be unreinforced. We had to abandon the entire thing. I almost cried in front of my professor." She took out a rolled up tent and read the instructions printed on the bag. "So anyway, that's why I took up geo-manipulation magic as a field of study." |

"Well, you've about sold me on learning geomancy as my primary magic focus. Anything to help these kinds of expeditions is great in my books." Aurora sits up and drains more of the water from her flask. "Hm. I might take a look around in a bit here, once I've rested up some. This area's been checked for toxicity levels, right?" |

"Of course, but you never know about undetected pockets, so..." Jehassa rummaged through her bag and pulled out a small device. There was a tiny crystal embedded in the back, and a small glass panel above cluster of buttons on the front. The corners were dented like it'd been dropped a few times. She tapped a button and lines appeared on the glass. She held it out to her. "There you go. I'll follow you shortly, once I have a tent set up." |

Aurora nods as she rises and accepts the device. "Alright. I'll be right back." She heads over toward the steps of the shrine, but rather than climb right up, she veers around to the side. The crystal in the detector strobes light every second as it works, but no readings come up on its screen. Aurora circles out around the edge of the temple, covering probably far more ground than she really needs to. As she comes back to the front of the temple, relieved to have detected no toxins in the area, she stubs her toe hard on something stuck in the ground. "Ack! ...Huh?" At her feet, barely visible through the hard dirt, the purple hexagonal point of a crystal shines through. "Hey, professor. I think I found something." |

By the time Aurora had circled around, Jehassa had already set up the tents and had begun setting up the little cooking stand. She looked up at Aurora's words, then put everything down immediately. Findings were fair more important than food. She knelt down by the crystal, examining the barely visible point with a critical eye, then touched the ground near it. "There is... rubble here," she said slowly, closing her eyes, her voice going husky. "Remnants of a... of an aumbry, though it's a little hard to tell. Surprising to see this so close to the surface." She drew a circle around what she supposed to be the size of the gem, then smiled at Aurora. "Fetch your tools, dear, and I'll bring it up for you. It is your find, after all." |
