Aurora's eyes light up, and she nods repeatedly. "Of course! Be right back!"

She scampers off to ferret through her backpack, pulling out the excavation tools: chisel, hammer, the like. As she returns, there's a slight skip in her step. She kneels down beside Jehassa as she hands her the tools. "Here you go, professor."

Jehassa laughed and handed her back the tools, shaking her head.

"Don't be silly, dear. This is your find. I'm just going to make it a little easier for you, that's all."

She rested her hands on either side of the circle she had drawn and, with the merest hint of will, raised a column of the packed earth from the ground, the crystal inside it. Now Aurora would be able to excavate it carefully from all sides.

"Oh. Right." Aurora gives a nervous chuckle as she takes the tools back, before kneeling in front of the column. She presses the chisel against the stone and takes a controlled swing with the hammer, edging off rock with the strike. Biting her lip in concentration, she works steadily at unearthing the crystal, only pausing to wipe sweat from her brow.

Several minutes in, with the crystal mostly excavated, her hand brushes the amethyst. A jolt of energy surges through her, and she recoils, her tools dropping to the ground. "Ow! ...Whoa, that was weird..."

Jehassa had been kneeling the entire time, carefully watching Aurora's progress chipping away the rock. She would jump in at any sign that Aurora's lack of experience would lead to a slip-up that could fracture the crystal but the longer she watched the more her smile grew as she didn't have to step in at all.

She straightened up quickly as Aurora reacted to the crystal, looking to her student with concern.

"Are you hurt, pet? What did you notice?"

"No, I'm fine... I think." Aurora wrings her hand, trying to shake off the light numbness. "Energy spark of some kind, but I don't think I've ever felt one this strong. Hand's kinda numb from it. And I felt... heavy for a moment there. But we won't know what's up with the crystal if it's not uncovered."

Aurora reaches back for her tools.

Jehassa frowned, but allowed it.

"Be more careful, Aurora, I would hate to lose you to a rock," she said, making light of it. They both knew that a powerful crystal could be potentially fatal if mishandled, but there was no need to be dramatic about it.

"Sorry, sorry... I didn't think it would be strong enough to jolt me like that." Aurora finishes chiseling the crystal free and allows it to drop into her hand. A light spark circuits through her, but nothing like the previous one. She lifts it to eye level for examination. "Hmm... trigonal crystal structure. Almost certainly amethyst. Although I've never heard of amethyst holding any elemental or deific power..."

She turns to her professor. "Is there anything associated with amethyst? I know quartz is Chareen, but..."

Jehassa stood up and leant in a little to get a small look for herself. While she trusted Aurora's judgement, she preferred to doublecheck for herself. She internally started running through the more obscure associations in her head.

"Nothing solid comes to mind without research, sweetheart," she said thoughtfully. "The first assumption, of course, would be Stygia, particularly with the pre-existing charoite association, but that's really just baseless conjecture... interesting."

"Hmm..." Aurora examines the stone, turning it over in her hand. Such a perfect shape. Such pristine color. Were this not deifically charged, it would no doubt make for a perfect gemstone. Which, by extension, means that its powers are most likely at their strongest possible. But there is only one way to test it. "...May I activate it, professor?"

"If you feel you can handle it, sweetheart. But let me ground you first," Jehassa said. She reached for her bag and took what looked like two bracelets connected by a woven metallic rope with a thin, magic-imbued silvery chain attached to the centre of that.

Jehassa put the bracelets on Aurora, then embedded the end of the chain the ground a few feet away from either of them.

These bracelets, or rather, the enchantments on them, were inventions of Jehassa's own design, and she'd found many uses for them over the years. It was a simple enough design, really, and she considered it simply chance that she had been the one to create it. The rope would allow the magic from the activated crystal to flow as normal, but if the surge was too much, the raw magic would be diverted down the middle chain and converted into electricity, earthing itself instead of harming Aurora. It could still be a little... explosive, but certainly better than have the same effect happen to your body.
