Zita is the first meerkat to awaken. Quietly, she gets up and slowly steps over her mate, careful not to disturb him, and makes her way for the burrow entrance, stopping briefly along the way to stretch out her stiff limbs and to let out a gaping yawn. Cautiously, she pokes her head above ground, scanning in all directions to make sure there's no sign of danger before emerging. With the coast all clear, she clambers up the burrow slope and immediately gets to working on excavating the burrow entrance. The sun is just starting to appear on the horizon, not quite the time for a meerkat to be emerging. What could have this eager meerkat having to get up so early? Today is a big day for the Zita mob. Their first litter will be emerging for the first time and Zita wants to make sure the slope is in tip top shape, free of debris and other uneven obsticles which could pose as a tripping hazard for the fragile little bundles. There's also a scense of nervous uncertainty. The 4 vibrant little bundles have spent 2 weeks tucked away in the deepest part of the burrow, safe and out of reach of predators. Once they emerge, life will become very dangerous for them. With only 6 responsible members in the group, everyone will have pull their weight if the litter is to survive their first 4 precarious months of life.

30 minutes later, Zita's mate, Mustafa, is the next meerkat to stir. He pushes himself up on all 4s with a stretch, then shakes some sand from his fur before making his morning debute. He emerges to see Zita already up and busying herself with the burrow chores. Humbly, he jumps right into helping his mate instead of choosing to warm his chilled body in the sun's raise. instinctively, he knows today is an important and clawbiting time for the group. His and Zita's very first litter will be emerging in a matter of a few hours. They must have this place looking represeantable and made pup-proof by the time the pups awaken. Occassionally, Mustafa makes nervous glances up at the sky and at the horizon, keeping watch for danger. They can't afford to encourage their precious litter out of the burrow at the worst time. These pups are their future and if they were to get wiped out, that could place the Zita mob's future in jeopardy.

Sharma is already awake. Being the only subordinate female able to lactate, she's taken the initiative to feed Zita's pups while she's busy with the house work. This motherly female adores pups and when ever she gets the oppurtunity to interact with them, she does so with glee and without protest, even if they're not her's. She'd do anything for an adorable wide eyed pup, even give in to their wishes to take them out on an adventure away from the burrow, which could have lethal consequences. She smiles adoringly and giggles at the pups' cute sounding squeaks and churrs as they suckle.

At the back of the burrow are Sharma's twin boys, Dilbagh and Daler. Like all teenagers the world over, they're sleeping in. Today is going to be a wake up call for these slackers. They're no longer the babies of the group. They're going to have to grow up and start becoming responsible around the burrow. These precious will need EVERYONE pull their weight if they're going to survive.

The last adult to make his appearance is Mustafa's bulky brother, Pitbull. He opts not to help with the burrow cleaning and takes up sentry duty instead. Someone has to keep vigilant while the others are hard at work straightening up the burrow. This bouncer version of a meerkat pridefully has their backs covered. Nervously but steady on his feet, he scans the skies and horizon attentively. Soon the pups will be emerging and he's adamant to make sure this day won't be his nieces' and nephews' last day experiancing their outside world for the first time. He'll do anything in his power to prevent them from being killed.

Zita finishes thoroughly cleaning her side of the burrow slope and steps back to admire her work. Looks all clear of debris, clumps of dirt and sand lumps. Satisfied, she takes a few steps away from the burrow, stretches out the front of her body, then ruffles out her fur and shakes out the sand that had collected on her in the process of her cleaning session. The way her fur sways in the sun's lighting looked graceful. She takes her position on a sand mound located 2 feet from the burrow entrance, her place of choice to bask in the sun and to await the emergance of the group's next generation.

Mustafa finishes his side of the slope shortly after. Usually, his excavation job is sloppy but this time he had put more effort into perfecting his tidyness. He wants the slope to be completely free of obsticles and safe for the pups to access. He stands gaurd a foot away from the burrow, on the side opposite to his mate, and surveys the landscape nervously. The big moment will be upon them any minute now, so they must be very aware of their surroundings and be prepared to act if the pups' lives suddenly become at stake.

Pitbull scans between the sky and landscape, maintaining his attentiveness at all times. He won't allow himself to be diverted from his responsiblity for anything. So far, there's no sign of danger as far as his eyes can see. He peeps the "watchmen's song" ensuring his brother and his mate that for the time being, the environment is pup friendly.

In the burrow, Sharma's ears twitch hearing the muffled watchmen's song being sounded outside. She gathers the pups, getting them ready to make their first debute above ground. Her heart rate elevates in nervous anticipation. The nerve wracking moment has finally arrived.

Mojave, Sunnybrooke, Lissa and Warren are lined up in a single file fashion. They've waited 3 agonizingly long weeks for this exhilarating moment. They're filled with mixed emotions now that the day of their emergance has arrived. They're ignorant to what they'll face once they emerge into the vast outside world.

Mojave is at the front of the line. He puts on a brave face and waits impatiently for Sharma to chaperone them above ground. He can't wait to see what's beyond the burrow.

Lissa, who's behind Mojave, is undaunted about this next mile stone she and her siblings are about to conqour. She scrabbles at the burrow ground impatiently. come on, let's go already!

Sunnybrooke is apprehensive. She's unsure about this some times dangerous milestone. What scary things will they encounter once they emerge? Monsters? bloodthirsty creatures? There's no way of telling until she gets out there to find out for herself.

Warren presses up against Sunnybrooke. He can't wait to get out there and explore!

It's apparent that the pups are all ready for this big moment, so, ecstatically, yet anxiously, Sharma begins ushering them torwards the burrow entrance. She hopes their emergance doesn't hit any snags.
