After finishing 9 and 12 while having an anemic offense backed by strong goaltending, the Jets were bounced out in the first round wild-card playoff last year by the Oilers. This year is a different story, however it didn't always look like it would be much different than last. The Jets started the year 5 and 8 with a strong offense but a sputtering final result. Cue January, and the Jets have now reeled off nine straight to head into the playoffs as the hottest team in the league. The Jets aren't without worry, however, as the injury bug has hit the team hard the past three weeks and two of their top players out for the season in Martin Hanzal and Mark Giordano. The Jets may have a saving grace, as the first round of the playoffs comes with a rest week by virtue of winning the Central Division. Following the theme of the New York Islanders, Winnipeg has made some changes to their leadership ranks. First, Claude Noel had to go (didn't he get fired last season anyways?). Paul Maurice is in and has righted the ship. Sidney Crosby is still the team leader, but Assistants Steve Ott and Mike Richards have been demoted (Richards in more ways than one) and replaced by Of Scheifele, Maurice had this to say, "Being so young, he's got a great head on his shoulders. The boys will follow him anywhere. He's one to watch in the playoffs." Speaking of players to watch, the Jets made key additions just prior to the deadline by bringing in Steve Mason, Michael Stone, Mike Fisher, and Jaromir Jagr to go all-in on this year's Cup playoffs. Mason says, "I don't mind being the backup to Varly and Lou. I'm just being patient and hopefully will get my opportunity to shine." Truer words have not been spoken, as he may just get his 'wish' coming Monday, as he may be the only healthy goaltender in Winnipeg. The MTS Centre will be rocking on Monday night. The Jets are asking all fans to wear white and have the White-Out once again!

Just as an addition. This is from Winnipeg's last playoff win...last win...ever, in Winnipeg....a game I was at! Game 3, 1996 playoffs vs Detroit. This isn't my photo, but I felt like reminiscing about the old barn.

They still do the WhiteOut in Phoenix....that is on those rare occasions when they actually make the playoffs. It's pretty cool. |
