Week 1 of the playoffs in in the books, with some exciting matchups. I'm going to try something a little different for the playoffs and take a look at each matchup in a little more depth followed by the awards.

Eastern Conference

#4 Ottawa vs #5 Buffalo

Final Score: Ottawa 97.78 Buffalo 76.25

While this was a close matchup all week the Senators saved their best for last and pulled away for the victory. Ottawa had trailed the entire week, but benefited from having a lot of players going on Sunday. Buffalo got out to the early lead in big part because of the play of Antti Niemi who posted 11 points in the loss. The Senators got some Sunday magic in the form of Marko Dano who posted 7.6 points for the week. Ottawa moves on to face rival Montreal.

Three Stars
3. David Backes - Ottawa 8.21
2. Alex Pietrangelo - Ottawa 10.2
1. Antti Niemi - Buffalo 11

#3 Philadelphia vs #6 Pittsburgh

Final Score: Pittsburgh 79.6 Philadelphia 78.5

Make it two weeks in a row for the Penguins over the Flyers. This one obviously hurts Philly as their outstanding season comes to an end. It was a back and forth affair all week and came down to the Flyers star: Pekke Rinne. He was in net Sunday night with a chance to seal the victory but it wasn't meant to be. He was outdueled in this matchup by Jonathan Quick who always seems to step it up this time of year. It also helped the Pens that Ondrej Pavelec was able to put up 7.5 points in net. Pittsburgh gets another rematch with the Islanders.

Three Stars:
3. Pekke Rinne - Philadelphia 8.5
2. Jonathan Quick - Pittsburgh 10.5
1. Scott Hartnell - Philadelphia 11.5

Western Conference

#3 Minnesota vs # 6 St. Louis

Final Score: Minnesota 89.7 St. Louis 86.3

The Wild got off to a great start this week but it took everything it had to shake off the pesky Blues. Minnesota got a great goaltending performance from both Eddie Lack and Jonathan Bernier, while on the other side the Blues got nothing in the way of goaltending which shows you how good their offense was with Ryan Getzlaf and Justin Faulk leading the way. For the victory Minnesota get red-hot Winnipeg in the next round.

Three Stars:
3. Ryan Getzlaf - St. Louis 7.4
2. Eddie Lack - Minnesota 9.5
1. Justin Faulk - St. Louis 10.7

#4 Phoenix vs #5 Dallas

Final Score: Phoenix 99.9 Dallas 88.5

If we are talking outstanding play in net we must be talking about the Coyotes. Every spring this seems to happen as Phoenix got three outstanding performances from their goalies. Ben Bishop, Sergei Bobrovsky, and Devan Dubnyk combined for almost 30 points! Dallas hung in most of the week with the play of their own young star in net: Jake Allen. Look out for this Dallas team in the future with a roster of young players. The Coyotes move on to face the President's Trophy winning Detroit Red Wings.

Three Stars:
3: Sergei Bobrovsky - Phoenix 10
2: Jake Allen - Dallas 10.5
1: Ben Bishop - Phoenix 11

Awards:

Goalie: Ben Bishop - Phoenix 1W 1SHO 11 Fantasy Points

Forward: Scott Hartnell - Philadelphia 5G 11.5 Fantasy Points

Defense: Justin Faulk - St. Louis 2G 2A 10.78 Fantasy Points

Rookie: Jake Allen - Dallas 1W 1SHO 10.5 Fantasy Points

Team: Phoenix 99 Fantasy Points
