One day after Artemi Panarin scored his first career hat trick, the New York Islanders decided to name him the new Captain of their team. Long-time Captain Ryan Callahan was bought out due to salary cap constraints a few weeks ago. That opened the Captaincy up for debate. Well, folks, there is no more debate!

Asked to comment on why he decided to go with Artemi Panarin, coach Pat LaFontaine had this to say:

"While Panarin is only 24 years of age and a rookie, he has displayed maturity beyond his years thus far. Despite being only 5'11 and 170 pounds, he is not afraid of getting hit and will hit as well when necessary. He is much more than a complementary player, as his hat trick last night showed. He is a magician on the ice with his stick-handling, shot and vision.

Another reason why we decided to go with him as Captain is that we have a group of young players coming up and they will need leadership, preferably from someone around their age who can relate. Panarin is not much older than Filip Forsberg (21), Nick Bjugstad (23), Anthony Duclair (20), Valeri Nichushkin (20), etc. These youngsters look up to Panarin. If he can accomplish this level of success, so can they."

Carey Price and Brent Burns will remain Assistant Captains and provide great experience and leadership as well.
