Vancouver "grabs" the #18 ranking for the 2016 DOFHL Entry Draft. The Canucks had 4 picks in this draft, with no 2nd round pick. That already put them at a bit of a disadvantage. With their first selection, they went with a somewhat risky pick in Tyson Jost. While he has an intriguing size and skill combination, he is still very raw. The other 3 selections were not very noteworthy and all of them were selected much later in the NHL draft. Tyson Jost(Round 1, #8) The Canucks grabbed one of the purest offensive players in selecting Tyson Jost eighth overall. He does a lot of things - skate, stickhandle, shoot and pass - very, very well. Jost’s most impressive skill, however, may be his ability to make his teammates better. He simply plays the game at a higher level than most players are able. A tireless worker, Jost will almost certainly wear a letter someday for the Avalanche. He could stand to work on his strength but in almost every other way, Jost is NHL-ready now. Joey Anderson(Round 3, #53) Vancouver selected US Development player Joey Anderson at #53. A little undersized but incredibly determined, Anderson nearly always makes the smart, simple play. Anderson is a terrific skater and uses that attribute to spearhead the forecheck and create turnovers. Anderson has a winner’s mentality that translates better to the NHL than fantasy. The hard working forward is headed to Minnesota-Duluth to work on his strength and skill. David Bernhardt (Round 3, #62) The Canucks went off the board in drafting overaged defenseman David Bernhardt at #62. The big Swede dominated the U20 SEL last year, recording 38 points in 45 games and has graduated to the senior team for the current season. Bernhardt is mobile and creative offensively and likes to join the rush whenever he can. This can leave him out of position at times and he will work on his consistency in the SEL for the next few years. Linus Lindstrom (Round 5, #80) With its final pick of the draft, Vancouver selected Swedish forward Linus Lindstrom at #80. Lindstrom is a dependable, play-making counterman who excels on the power play. Lindstrom is just an average skater and his slight frame and perimeter style may not translate to the North American game. The Canucks will have to wait and see if Lindstrom can add enough strength to come across the pond and make an impact. While the Canucks did not have their best draft in 2016, they are making solid moves to add depth to their roster by using their extra cap space. Edited by EugeneNYI - commish, Sep 21 2016, 11:47 PM.

I used the same statistical analysis I employed last year, which merely measured where the player was taken in OUR draft versus his position taken in the NHL draft, giving positive points if taken later in our draft (perceived value), and deducting points if taken sooner in our draft (perceived reach). No objective measure of talent was used. Based on this approach, I had Vancouver ranked at #16 overall. I showed Vancouver reached for all 4 picks, but REALLY reached for Bernhardt. He could have easily improved to #13 if not for that reach. However it must be pointed out that, except for the top 2 or 3 players drafted every year, all of these guys will prove their mettle, or not, in time. Matt will have the last laugh if Bernhardt pans out. |
