BOSTON BRUINS The Boston Bruins take the 16th spot in our rankings, partially because the Boston Bruins GM missed the last 2 selections for his team in round 5. That clearly hurt their draft. Aside from that, the four selections the Bruins made were decent, highlighted by Mikhail Sergachev at 11th overall. Let’s review their 4 selections: Mikahil Sergachev (Round 1, pick #11) An excellent two-way defenseman, this was a very strong pick for Boston. The Bruins are clearly looking to improve their defense. At the last trade deadline, they acquired Colton Parayko from the New York Islanders. Now they have added another key piece to their defense prospects. Sergachev has already showed his offensive upside by putting up assists in a number of rookie tournament matches thus far. Rasmus Asplund (Round 2, pick #29) The Bruins have a number of excellent forward stars already (Malkin, MacKinnon, Draisaitl, etc). However, they could use some depth at forward. Asplund could be exactly what they need to add to that depth. He is a very good all-around forward. Not really flashy, but good defensively and can make a good pass. Carl Grundstrom (Round 3, pick #47) Another Swede forward who plays a similar style to Asplund. He is physical and good defensively. He does have a bit of skill, but not very flashy. Like Asplund, he will add valuable, and hopefully cheap, depth to the Bruins forward pool. Jacob Moverare (Round 4, pick #65) The Bruins wisely added another defenseman to their pool. The question is whether he is more of a defensive defenseman or a two-way defenseman. The Bruins will hope for the latter. At this stage in the draft, he was a decent selection. Overall, the Bruins did well with the selections they did make. However, they hurt themselves by not making either of the Round 5 selections. Edited by EugeneNYI - commish, Sep 23 2016, 05:13 PM.

I had Boston at #12. He did really well with his first 3 picks but reached pretty far for Moverare. Still he was a LONG way from #13 in my rankings and could have easily moved up 2 or 3 spots without the broad reach with his final pick or had he taken some safe picks with the two he missed in Round 5. I'll defer to Eugene on the merits of his picks. The biggest crime here was failing to use the final draft picks. Probably due to a completely full roster. Still, a shame to eat two picks, one of which was acquired in a trade. That hurts.... |

Ye, I agree that he could have had a much better draft if he didnt miss those 2 picks in round 5! I personally ranked him #18 for missing those 2 picks...to me that hurts your team long-term and should not happen. |

I concur. You give up assets in a trade in exchange for picks you ought to be pretty certain you can use the pick or why trade for it? I haven't looked at his roster for "drop worthy" players but I'm sympathetic as I TOO find it hard to part with guys I liked enough to take in the first place, in exchange for someone who hasn't proven anything yet. Still....gotta find a way to move those picks if you can't use them. |
