Toronto Maple Leafs
Team Manager – Gian
Composite Draft Rank: #15

Players Drafted:

Logan Brown (Round 1, pick #12)
Filip Gustavsson (Round 2, pick #30)
Cameron Morrison (Round 3, pick #48)
David Quenneville (Round 4, pick #66)
Simon Stransky (Round 4, pick #70)

I didn’t care for Gian’s draft this year but I will be the first to admit, I don’t have much to base that opinion on other than my gut. My first reaction was that with guys like Luke Kunin, Jake Bean and Daante Fabbro still on the board at #12 that I wasn’t crazy about the Logan Brown pick. Drafted 11th overall by the Ottawa Senators, I was underwhelmed by his production in major junior in his draft eligible year, particularly for someone with his dominant size. Yet just about everyone else, including the many pundits who know much more about scouting and player evaluation than I do, all seem to disagree, which is not surprising. I also thought that the selection of Gustavsson at #30 overall was a bit of a reach given the general underwhelming 2016 goalie class but the Pittsburgh Penguins disagreed and selected him #55 overall in the 2nd round. I did like the Cam Morrison selection, Morrison lit up the USHL last year and was drafted #40 overall by the Colorado Avalanche and Gian got him at #48 in our draft.

Logan Brown (Round 1, pick #12)
The first thing that people notice about Brown is his size. The 6'6" centre is known as one of the biggest draft eligible players, although he isn't going to be a bottom six bruiser type. It's interesting that the Senators continued their theme of drafting big players, although Brown probably isn't a prototypical big centreman. He is seen as more of a playmaker, as he had 21 goals and 53 assists in 59 games for the Spitfires this season. Considering his size, he will get every opportunity to succeed, which makes sense. It's hard to project exactly what he will become for Ottawa, but considering he already has a head start with his size and his passing ability, this could be a great pick.

Filip Gustavsson (Round 2, pick #30)
Filip Gustavsson is considered by many to be among the finest goaltending prospects in the upcoming draft. He is noted for being positionally strong, letting the play come to him, and for having smooth movement from side to side across the face of the goal. He has issues overcommitting to a play sometimes, though, and would likely need several years of seasoning before he could play in the NHL.

Cam Morrison (Round 3, pick #48)
Selected by the Colorado Avalanche with the 40th pick in the 2nd Round of the 2016 amateur draft, Cam Morrison from the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL had an amzing year. He's a 6'2" 207 pound C/LW committed to Notre Dame. After a slow start due to early injuries, Morrison dominated the USHL in the 2nd half of the season and was arguably the best player in the league. Morrison is big, fast, and defensively sound, racking up 34 goals and 32 assists last year for the Phantoms, on his way to a Rookie-of-the-Year title. He also had 4 pts in the U18 WJCs with Team Canada and was one of Canada’s most effective players along with Tyson Jost.
Steve Kournianos of The Draft Analyst had this to say about the big forward:
"You might as well start calling him Mr. Touchdown, because watching this South Bend-bound monster on the ice is reminiscent of a bruising tight end who always finds the end zone. Morrison was named the USHL’s 2016 top rookie after winning the OJHL Rookie of the Year in 2015. He’s a classic power forward with a strong desire to get to the net and position himself to receive the puck in optimal scoring areas."
Love this pick.

David Quenneville (Round 4, pick #66)
Quenneville is, yes, of that Quenneville family that extends beyond just his second cousin, Blackhawks coach Joel. His brother John was drafted by New Jersey in 2014 and his uncle (by marriage) is none other than the Islanders own Johnny Boychuk. His scoring numbers for Medicine Hat placed him 10th in the Western Hockey League among defenseman, right behind 2015 Islanders pick Parker Wotherspoon. He also had a good showing for Team Canada at the World Juniors Under-18 tournament. Although at just 5'-8", Quenneville is more Ryan Ellis than Brent Burns. A longshot to stick in the league at that size and on defense, Quenneville is the perfect DOFHL 4th or 5th round pick, take a shot on a talented player, you never know.

Simon Stransky (Round 4, pick #70)
Simon comes from a true hockey family. His brother, Matej, is a prospect for the Dallas Stars. He also had his father, grandfather and two uncles play hockey in different Czech leagues. Simon is coming off a strong WHL season (62 points in 62 games). He is a very good playmaker. He plays a similar style to fellow Czech Ales Hemsky. Like Ales Hemsky, for him to become successful he will need to improve in other areas of his game.

I had Toronto dead last in my rankings....and #17 was not even in sight. No beef with Logan Brown, or really with Gustavsson or Morrison either. But he went WAY too early for Quennville, and Stransky (who Eugene must have overlooked) wasn't even drafted in the NHL. Making for a pretty horrible score in the Bo-nalisys system. And Stransky was nabbed with a 4th round pick obtained from the Mighty Coyotes so I guess taking a flyer was indicated. Although, while off of everyone else's radar, Stransky doesn't look too bad for a speculative pick. And I doubt Gian made his pick with my method of analysis in mind. Still, he wandered pretty far off the path for his last two picks, which primarily accounts for my bad ranking. Realistically Eugene's eval is probably a better indication of the true report card earned here.
