Hey Guys, I know its kind of still summer and slow but I thought that I would crank up some topics for discussion, the 1st of which is the handful of unsigned top level free agents out there. Here are a few of my thoughts, I'd be interested in everyone else's take as well. Derek Stepan - The Rangers squandered their opportunity to lock Stepan up for the next 5-6 years when they stubbornly refused to but out Brad Richards, a move that I cannot explain in any other terms other than management incompetence by the Rangers Front Office. Statistically he is already an elite player and after Nash & Lundqvist, arguably the Ranger's most important player. He is 23 years old and going to be getting better for the next 3 or 4 years. The Rangers are trying to play "Bridge Contract Bullshit" with him and he's not falling for it, definitely a possible hold-out. Alex Pietrangelo - St. Louis went out and spent a bunch of money on Jay-Bo and others and thought somehow that they were going to get away with paying this guy $4M for 3 years in a bridge deal, to which Pietrangelo's agent's politely said...."get real", he's worth every penny of $5M for 5-6 years and he's likely going to get it....maybe not from the Blues? Boggles the mind how teams get themselves in these positions, why would you want Bouwmeester over this guy? Nazem Kadri - My favorite guy in this disussion because he's a little bit of a loose cannon but statistically just as good as Stepan, and doesn't get the same kind of respect....but his agent isn't fooled, reportedly asking for Jamie Benn type money $5M for 5-6 Years, and probably worth it as well, one of the only truly dynamic offensive players in Toronto beside Kessel. Likely a hold-out given the Leaf's public posturing on contract...WOW |
![]() And now the Rangers had it because they beat the Vancouver Canucks last night in a spine-tingler of a Game 7 in the finals. When it ended, amid the anxiety and perspiration of a 3-2 victory, fireworks exploded overhead. Tears and champagne flowed. A fan held up a sign that said "Now, I Can Die in Peace." | |

I'm kinda shocked that the Coyotes and Boedker haven't come to an arrangement yet. With the team's ownership situation finally resolved, you would assume that the purse strings don't have to be held quite as tightly. Clearly he's not worth Stepan money but he should get a substantial raise over last year's $1.1M. 'Yotes took him with the #8 overall pick in 2008. Maybe it's time he got a payday.....he's played every game over the last two seasons. C'mon, boys. Let's get her done.... |

NYR this is a great topic, thanks! I agree on the players mentioned. Don't even get me started about Richards! I'm surprised about a number of decent Dmen. Whitney, Hainsey and Gilbert come to mind. All 3 had somewhat poor seasons. Still, if not for the cap going down, all 3 would have an NHL deal by now I think. At forward I'm very surprised about Brunner. I doubt he is asking for a ton of money. He has to know he only has half a season so far. To me a team like Nashville needs him as they lack scoring. Same goes for NJ. I also expected Morrow to be signed by now. Not asking for a lot of money. Good leadership. |

I expect Brunner to sign for less than he hoped. Probably a one year deal...two tops. Until he proves himself. Hainsey is probably still unemployed more as a result of his union activities versus any salary or contract length demands. He's gotta be worth at least HALF of what Boumeester is paid. |

I think these contract situations get overblown. Young guys like Kadri don't deserve a huge paycheck. Nor does Stepan in my opinion yet. I think these guys should be doing the teams that drafted them in the first place a favor and sign bridge deals. It allows teams a bit of extra cash to really try and build. Payday is on the way after the bridge deal if they really prove themselves. I feel players should start to show more respect and commitment to winning rather than greed. Of course a guy like Subban missed out on some cash short term but given the way he's played since signing the bridge contract, it's now obvious to himself, the Canadiens and the rest of the hockey world that a big pay day is on the way. Look at the terrible contract Doughty forced the kings into... Yes he's a great player, but he's not the offensive player they thought they were getting as they really didn't have a big enough sample size to truly evaluate his long term contributions to his team. |

It's being reported that the 'Yotes and Boedker are close to inking a 2 year deal. Awesome! I want him in at the start of camp....no Turris repeat here, hopefully.... |

Kadri and Leafs do the smart thing and get a 2 year bridge deal done. Well done, gentlemen... |

And Stepan & Pietrangelo remain hold-outs, very bad news for Blues & Rangers fans. |
