Long Island Newsday published: 10/19/13 We had a chance to speak with the GM of the New York Islanders after their 1-1 start to the DOFHL season. Here is the transcript from that interview: Question: GM Eugene Oliker, how do you feel about your start to the DOFHL season? Answer: To be honest, we would have liked to see a better start. It was nice to win against Montreal. However, I felt that against Buffalo our goaltending let us down a bit with Price and Markstrom not playing up to par. Question: Speaking of goaltending, what are your views on Josh Harding? Answer: After grabbing him off Waivers late last season, we did not expect much from him. We just wanted him to at least stay healthy. This season, he has continued on a very determined quest to not only show everyone that he can stay healthy, but that he is a legitimate #1 goalie! We are very impressed with his progress and determination. He has earned more ice time. Question: You mentioned Waivers, how do you feel about your Claims this season? Answer: Well, as you know we do not have the cap space of teams like Detroit or Chicago. Therefore, we could not afford to claim someone like Marleau. However, we instead stayed focused on adding cheaper pieces that still fit in with the kind of team we want to be, a well-rounded team. Question: Can you speak in particular about what Mike Fisher and Jason Garrison bring to your team? Answer: Sure. We claimed both of those players because they have talent but also bring intangibles. Mike Fisher is a very consistent player who can do a little bit of everything, including helping us on Faceoffs. Jason Garrison has a bomb for a shot, and it's an accurate shot as well. We are going to pair him with Alex Edler on our first PP unit. After losing Mark Streit to free agency this summer, we needed someone who can play big minutes and really help Edler out. Question: How do you feel about the 2 trades you have made this summer? Answer: We are happy with Derick Brassard so far (we traded Cooke, Zharkov and 4th for him). Due to our depth at Center, he is not getting the ice time we would like for him to get. However, he still has 4 points in 6 games already. As for Kari Lehtonen (traded Halak and J.McGinn for him), when healthy he has been excellent. He is close to returning to full-time duty, maybe as early as this weekend. We expect him to have a very strong season! Losing McGinn was not easy, but we have added players like Mike Fisher to try to compensate for that lose. Question: Looking back at he 2013 DOFHL Entry Draft, are you happy with your selections? Answer: Mostly happy, yes. Valeri Nichushkin(F) will take some time to adjust to the smaller ice surface, the language and the new country. Some of his moves just won't work in the NHL. But his shot and size will! We are easing him into the league and giving him very little ice time for now. As for the other selections, they are all having very good seasons so far. Madison Bowey(D) has 9 points in just 9 games in the WHL, which is top 10 for Defensemen there. Anthony Duclair(F) is burning up the Q with 8 goals in just 10 games(top 10 for Forwards). Adam Tambellini(F) and Zachary Sanford(F) have only played a few games this season but so far, so good. Question: And finally, what do you envision for this DOFHL season? Answer: It's going to be Very competitive I think! The West has a number of elite teams like Minnesota and Phoenix but also other teams who are formidable(like Detroit). The East won't be a cake walk either. A team like Tampa has a lot of great young players like Barkov and Chiasson who are contributing now, along with vets like Duchene and Ovechkin. Pittsburgh has 3 good goalies. Boston has a very scary offense that we will have to face next week, with Malkin, T.Hall and young studs like MacKinnon and some guy named Hertl!:) For our team, staying healthy will be key as we just don't have the star power some other teams do.
