Burning Questions Answered! We sat down with Vicki Dummer, executive vice-president of current series for ABC, to ask about GENERAL HOSPITAL’s future, the Daytime Emmys… and whether or not a new soap might be on the horizon! Here’s what she had to say! The In Depth Story: Asked for her thoughts on GH’s recent performance, the exec admits that she’s “so pleased,” adding, “It feels like we’re on a great trajectory and poised to grow even more. And I’m super excited about where the show is headed with the stories and where the characters are going! Despite the fact that the network’s only remaining soap is doing so well, it doesn’t look as if we’ll be seeing ABC bringing more sudsy dramas to the daytime airwaves anytime soon. “I’m going to say ‘Never say never,’” Dummer hedges, “but scripted programming is incredibly expensive. It just is. What [GH’s executive producer, Frank Valentini, and headwriter, Ron Carlivati] have been able to do is get the show to an incredibly manageable place, but the show is still more expensive than talk or other genres.” “Scripted programming is incredibly expensive.” What about the Daytime Emmys, which this year were relegated to a Webcast? Might they return to the network airwaves? Dummer admits that seems incredibly unlikely. “Unfortunately,” she explains, “the audience just isn’t there for that. Plus, she points out, where there’s an awards ceremony, there’s a dinner, and before you know it, the costs balloon. “It’s an expensive show to mount,” she concludes pragmatically, “and it’s dif-ficult to monetize,” making it “a challenge” for anyone to undertake. |

Ava’s In Over Her Head! Time and again, GH’s Ava Jerome has figured out how to save her own skin. But has joining forces with Julian and Fluke landed her in the catbird seat… or will she wind up swimming with the fishes? The In Depth Story: While living under Sonny’s roof, Ava thought that her days were numbered. But that all changed when she forced Julian to rescue her and formed an unlikely alliance with her brother and Fluke. Or did it? “While I would never count Ava out,” says headwr i ter Ron Carlivati, “she’s definitely in over her head!” Like others who’ve been fooled by Fluke’s face, Ava thinks she knows who she is dealing with. And the scribe says that while Ava was definitely surprised to find out that Luke Spencer was the big, bad boss, she also assumed she could handle him. How long until she finds out just how wrong that assumption is? This week, Fluke’s plot to take over ELQ hits a bit of a bump in the road when Michael happens to be in the right place at the wrong time… at least as far as Tracy is concerned! And later, Ava may get a clue as to what the future holds when she gets a rather sinister request from Fluke! “Ava may have just gone from the frying pan into the fire,” says Carlivati with a laugh. “She escaped Sonny’s clutches only to wind up getting entangled with Fluke!” |

Can Ned Mend Olivia’s Heart? Just friends. That’s how GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Ned and Olivia have classi ed their newfound connection. But the man who once made women swoon as Eddie Maine could be the perfect rebound romance to help the hotelier get over Sonny! The In Depth Story: We already know that Tracy’s son has a thing for Italian girls from Bensonhurst. (See also: Lois.) Plus, cozying up to this attractive brunette would drive Sonny absolutely crazy! “Oh my God, Ned would relish that!” laughs his portrayer, Wally Kurth. “I’d relish having a relationship with Olivia on so many levels, but in Ned’s opinion, when the apocalypse happens and the end of the world comes, Sonny will be like a cockroach surviving it all. “The guy has been responsible for Ned losing three people in his life,” he continues. “A.J., obviously, [and] taking Michael away from A.J. And then Kristina, Alexis’ sister. Remember her? She got caught in Sonny’s crossfire. Also, most importantly, he stole Jason from the Quartermaines. I’ll never forgive him for turning Jason against us.” So while helping to erase Sonny from Olivia’s mind would definitely have the added bonus of sticking it to Corinthos, Ned’s intentions toward Ms. Falconeri are honorable, Kur th says. “He really likes Olivia!” the actor declares. “She reminds him of Lois in that she’s a strong woman with a wicked sense of humor.” But after Sonny’s horrible betrayal with Ava, will Olivia allow herself to love — and laugh — again? |

GH It’s official: Jason Is Coming Back!” he latest comings and goings — and how they will change your shows! It was the shot heard ’round the GENERAL HOSPITAL Fan Club Weekend when Michael Easton (Silas) told the crowd that “Jason is coming back.” But when will that be? And more importantly, what actor will be playing the beloved hit man? The In Depth Story: The buzz that THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS Emmy winner Billy Miller (ex-Billy) will be taking over the role of Sam’s husband — vacated in October 2012 by Steve Burton (who now plays Dylan on the CBS soap) — was quite the topic of conversation at the soap’s annual fan gathering. ABC has yet to confirm Miller’s casting, which TV Guide’s Michael Logan tweeted back in early June that he’d heard was a “done deal.” Whether or not Jason is alive was the question on everyone’s lips at the fan events, especially after Easton’s declaration that Sam’s late husband is headed back to the canvas. Only days later the is-sue was addressed on screen when Robin told Patrick — after they accidentally crossed paths at the Crichton-Clark clinic — that Jason was dead. Of course, few fans who’ve been following the backstage drama bought the heroine’s story! Now, Soaps In Depth has learned from a well-placed source that it’s simply a matter of hammering out the details before Miller makes his debut! Needless to say, there are the hardcore JaSam fans who won’t accept anyone other than Bur ton playing the part. But the audience favorite tells us that he’s happy at Y&R with a schedule that allows him to fly back and forth to his home in Nashville. (A deal that he and ABC could not agree on prior to his GH exit.) So unless Y&R happens to release Bur ton from his contract and ABC agrees to his current commute, it’s highly unlikely that he’ll be resuming the role. |

Sabrina’s Plot Twist! After spending two months back home in Puer to Rico grieving the death of her premature baby, Sabrina returns to Port Charles this week when her portrayer, Teresa Castillo, returns from maternity leave on Thursday, August 21. (Daughter Victoria was born on May 29.) “I was nervous going back to work,” she shares. “It was only like 10 weeks that I had off. It did go by relatively fast.” Is a romantic reunion with Patrick in the cards, or has Dr. Drake moved on with Sam? “There’s quite a storyline coming up,” Castillo teases. “Interesting turns that I didn’t expect. But I’m excited about it!” |
