Sam Gets A New Son!
PSST!
Sam’ s son, Danny, has been hit with a slight case of SORAS just in time for a potential reunion with dad Jason! Caden and Corben Rothweiler — who have appeared on Disney XD’s KICKIN’ IT — will be taking over the role from Jaxon and Jakob Kring. The soap’s casting call was forblond-haired, blue-eyed 3-or 4-year-old twins; the Krings will be 3 in January.
In other news, there’s been no announcement regarding the casting of an African-American male in his mid-30s to early 40s (rumored to be T.J.’s dad) for a contract role scheduled to begin taping in September.

Secrets, Sabrina And Maybe Sex?
Are Ned and Olivia just friends… or might there be something more brewing between them? That very question could be answered on Tuesday, August 19! • Shh! Jordan and Shawn have a secret, and they plan on keeping it between themselves on Wednesday, August 20! • Sabrina returns on Thursday, August 21. What will she think of the changes that have taken place in her absence? • Nina wants to have another baby. Oh, it’s probably worth mentioning that she wants Silas to father it on Friday, August 22! Wonder if that has something to do with the proposition she makes him on Wednesday, August 27? And how will the news Nina gets from Britt on Friday, August 29, impact her hopes of becoming a mommy?
Will Liz Win Nikolas At Last?
They say it’s good to be king, but it ain’t bad being a prince, either. Just ask Nikolas, who has both Elizabeth and Britt fighting to be his princess! Not surprisingly, he’s torn between the beauties on Monday, August 18. It’s not an easy decision, nor is it one that should be taken lightly! As for the ladies, they continue to vie for his af fections on Monday, August 25! But even in Port Charles, there’s only so long that a guy can keep two girls hanging on the line! On Thursday, August 28, Elizabeth pays Nikolas a visit to tell him it’s time to ... er, use the facilities or get off the pot! But on Friday, August 29, Liz may just take mat ters into her own hands! When she makes a decision about her future, will it involve Nikolas?

In Depth Cover Story
WILL THEY OR WON’T THEY
Carly and Sonny’s passion could push Franco over the edge! A kiss is just a kiss… unless, of course, the couple sharing the buss is GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Sonny and Carly. So whilelast week’s kiss really wasn’t that big a deal, Sonny is about to suggest he and Carly take things to the next level. But doing so could have devastating consequences! Will Sonny and Carly repeat their often-ugly history by crossing the line… or might they finally have wised up to just how destructive their passion really is?
It’s All Fun And Games Until…
Over the past few weeks, Sonny has gotten a whole lot of pleasure out of pushing Franco’s Carly-related buttons. But is that all there is to it? “It’s a game for him right now, ” says Maurice Benard (Sonny), “but that doesn’t matter, because it’s Carly. There’s so much history that he can play the game and his feelings will be stirred. Whether he wants that or not doesn’t really matter!”
And although Carly is happily involved with Franco, she feels the pull of history, too. “It’s very hard for Carly to turn Sonny down,” admits her portrayer, Laura Wright. “And Franco is getting very jealous!”
It’s all leading up to Sonny ringing Carly’s doorbell on a rainy night. “He has pizza and wine,” adds Wright with a laugh. But is this reality or another of the dreams she’s been having since they shared that steamy kiss at the hospital?
History Lessons
“Anybody who watches GH knows that Sonny and Carly had a passionate relationship,” reminds headwriter Ron Carlivati. “There was a deep love there, but it was also very explosive, antagonistic, and, ultimately, it was a relationship that couldn’t work.” Which is why the twosome eventually — if somewhat reluctantly — went their separate ways. “Despite that, the bond stayed between them,” the scribe continues, “even after they split up, and it was definitely helped along by the fact that they share children. That’s real and true, and they would do anything for those kids.”
Do we sense a “but” coming? “But,” Carlivati acknowledges, “the kids are a very convenient thing to hang those feelings on. Because for Sonny and Carly, those feelings are dangerous.
Any time they go there, it tends to end in disaster!”
More than a few people and relationships have been thrown under the Sonny and Carly bus over the years, and yet they can’t seem to resist going back for more at the worst possible times! Is that what’s happening now?
“Sonny seems to be stepping over the line that they’ve had with each other,” admits Carlivati, “which is that there can be nothing romantic or physical or emotional between them anymore. He’s pushing that a little bit, and Carly is starting to feel it, too! So the question is, what will happen between them?”
Dangerous Liaisons
Should Carly and Sonny give in to their simmering passions, it could have repercussions that echo across the canvas! “The threat,” reminds Carlivati, “isn’t your typical soap opera threat of, ‘Oh, somebody might cheat on somebody else.’ We know that Franco knows that Sonny killed A.J., and he also knows that Carly has been keeping this secret from Michael!
“That raises the stakes of this triangle a lot higher,” says Carlivati, “because it all ties back to the secret that Carly chose to share with Franco… idiotically! Memo to Carly: The next time your ex-husband kills somebody, don’t tell Franco!”
By week’s end, Franco gets a shock when he uncovers Nina’s secret… and then fills Michael in on Sonny’s apparent pursuit of Carly! But will that be the only bombshell that Franco drops on Carly’s son?

Anthony Geary (Luke)
TAKE TWO TAKE TWO
Spoiler: click to toggle Anthony Geary (Luke)
TAKE TWO TAKE TWO
And now the conclusion of our one-on-one with GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Anthony Geary (Luke/Fluke) In the second par t of Soaps In Depth’s once-in-alifetime Q&A with GENERAL HOSPI -TAL’s legendar y Anthony Gear y (Luke/Fluke), the daytime superstar opens up about what convinced him not to retire, how he developed his character’s evil twin and what it was like to hit the stage at the most recent Nurses Ball!
Soaps In Depth: When we left off, we were discussing what was to be your final storyline on GH. Which obviously didn’t turn out to be your swan song. What changed your mind about retiring?
Anthony Geary: Executive producer Frank Valentini is a very smart man. He’s vastly talented and a solidly handson producer. Last fall, he talked me out of retirement, promising to provide a great story. I wanted to believe him and decided I wasn’t quite ready to walk away. Then, one day, he asked me to come to his office for a conference call with Ron Carlivati [GH’s headwriter], and it all changed. His inspiration being his sweeping knowledge of GH history, he told me an idea for a story they wanted to tell about Luke and a nemesis. A character whose sole intention would be to ruthlessly steal Luke’s life, destroy him, destroy Sonny Corinthos and take down as much of Port Charles as he could for good measure. I was sold, and Fluke was born.
In Depth: This has to be just about the most fun you’ve ever had at GH.
Geary: It’s been enjoyable, one of the most challenging and rewarding periods of work I’ve had on this show.
In Depth: Everybody has their guesses about Fluke’s true identity. But most of them are probably wrong.
Geary: I hope so.
In Depth: How did you go about designing this character? What did you want him to be — and not to be?
Geary: I slowed down his rhythm and tried to give him a very placid, unemotional effect. I wanted to convey a sociopath who believes his lies and has no remorse or conscience. I wanted him to be a different man than Luke Spencer who was effectively “being Luke.” I found the differences between them and tried to bring those differences into the scenes. Like humor. Fluke has no humor. Luke loves life and treasures it. Fluke has no feelings of love for anything and treasures only his power. That kind of thing.
In Depth: Is there a chance that, even after you’ve developed and established this character, the powers that be could decide to go in a completely different direction?
Geary: There’s always a chance they could change story horses midstream, but I’d be very surprised if they did.
In Depth: Occasionally, some fans in the audience have forgotten that Luke may be Tony Geary, but Tony Geary is not Luke. But the distinction seems very, very clear now. Was that important for you to do?
Geary: I never thought about it that way, but if it’s true that this story helps people come to their senses who actually think I’m Luke Spencer 24/7, it would be a very welcome side effect to doing the work.
In Depth: Fluke started out funny and then, in time, became funny and kinda creepy. How did you decide to go that route with him?
Geary: I didn’t. It just evolved. I didn’t have a clear idea of who Fluke was. I waited to be guided by the script. I decided early on he was a sociopath with psychotic episodes, but apart from that, I just tried to find the truth and motivation for each scene. I was frequently caught off guard and delighted by the things Mr. Carlivati and Co. invented for me to do. They weren’t shy about giving me a very dark, very reckless man with no moral compass and simple, clear motivation for all his extreme behavior. I loved finding the creepiness in his coming on to Kiki. Kristen Alderson and I laughed a lot during those scenes. The morning Fluke showed up at her door with fresh donuts seeking romance and got a knee in the ba--s for it was particularly fun. Kristen and I were comfortable together. More than once, she told me she was glad it was me playing the part. I was flattered. It pleased me to hear her say that, because it meant she trusted me. With her trust, I could push the envelope further. I appreciated her courage and commitment to make those scenes powerful, uncomfortable and creepy. We’d known each other since before she came on GH [from back when she was Starr on ONE LIFE TO LIVE] through several ABC Daytime/Broadway Cares benefit concerts in which we performed.
In Depth: Fluke with Olivia was great, too. The one that got away. Lisa LoCicero said that when Fluke leaned in to kiss her, as a Tony/Luke fan from way back, she wanted to lean in and kiss you!
Geary: Yeah. The one that got away. Lisa LoCicero is a very beautiful woman and a totally present actor. Our few scenes at the bar were a joy. I can totally see Fluke trying to bed Olivia just to throw gasoline on Luke Spencer’s family and to make a conquest of one of Sonny’s women.
In Depth: We’ve seen you stare down all kinds of danger as Luke — from the Mob to the law. But perhaps nothing has ever stopped you in your tracks like Fluke’s showdown with Spencer!
Geary: I had a really good time in the scenes with Fluke and Spencer Cassadine. Nicolas Bechtel is very bright, quite the professional, and lives in his own world. It was fun to share that world for a little while. I see the kid as having the soul of an old vaudevillian. I picture him smoking cigars, chasing the ladies of the ensemble and telling showbiz stories while fleecing the crew in backstage poker games.
In Depth: Was it a goal of yours with Fluke, to really “go there,” push the envelope?
Geary: There’s no reason to hold back anything here. My directors are all supportive of the character, and Frank Valentini is usually on the set when I work. I trust he’ll rein in anything that goes too far. He hasn’t exercised that right yet. If anything, he’s encouraged me to find new territory to explore and find different ways to creep the scene out. I never think my job is to edit or filter a character, especially one who knows no personal boundaries. My job is to deliver the script and push the envelope as far as possible.
In Depth: Luke talking with Fluke was just phenomenal. How was that taped? Was it an all-day effort or shot on different days or… ?
Geary: The scenes with both characters in the padded cell were shot all on the same day on split screen. Bill Ludel, the same director who shot Luke’s intervention some years ago, directed the scenes. It was a very difficult, technical show to pull off, but Mr. Ludel and his camera operators did a brilliant job. The character moving in and out of the split screen and the two characters talking to each other was seamless. The episode was beautifully edited by Chris Magarian. Recent Emmy winner Donna Messina-Armogida did my makeup. The whole thing was guided and brought home by Frank. It was a total team effort.
In Depth: During that sequence at the institution, Luke was nearly bald, and Fluke wasn’t. How did you pull that off? Fans were abuzz that you must have been wearing a wig for those scenes or… for years!
Geary: It was my idea to shave my head, and no, I am not wearing nor have I ever worn a wig on GH. That’s my hair, thank you very much.
In Depth: How did you approach your performance at the Nurses Ball knowing that it was Fluke and not Luke on stage?
Geary: Well, that’s hard to answer. For one thing, Luke would never have chosen that song, “I Am What I Am.” It was a kind of rude finger to the whole town. [Music director] Paul Glass did a really cool arrangement of the song, and director Larry Carpenter shot it with great style. Luke wouldn’t have sung that song. I don’t know what he’d sing at the Nurses Ball. Maybe we’ll find out next year!

Spoiler: click to toggle Feature Interview: Jason Thompson (Patrick) Life After SCRUBS Jason Thompson contemplates Patrick’s future without Robin! Spoiler: click to toggle Feature Interview: Jason Thompson (Patrick)
Life After SCRUBS
Jason Thompson contemplates Patrick’s future without Robin! Everyone has a breaking point, and GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Patrick Drake has reached his. Having lost his wife, child and job all in the blink of an eye, “I don’t see how he could be happy anytime soon,” his supremely talented por trayer, Jason Thompson, says. “I don’t think two humans can end a relationship the way Patrick and Robin did and be completely okay afterwards. I just don’t see it.” Frankly, neither do we.
How Emma Gives Her Father The Strength To Carry On
No matter what happened to Patrick in the past — and heaven knows, plenty has happened — he always seemed to put one foot in front of the other and keep going. But this time around, something is very different. “There’s a feeling of unrest underneath him at all times,” Thompson explains. “He’s hovering just above the waves that are storming underneath him.
“To a certain extent, he’s just kind of ‘there,’” he continues. “It doesn’t mean that he doesn’t put on a brave, happy face for people, because he does — especially for Emma. She needs him. That’s why he has such a great relationship with her. They’ve been on their own for a lot of the last couple of years. He wants to focus on her right now and let her know that she’s okay.”
The Lowdown On A Patrick/Sam Hook-Up
The one and only person that the doctor seems to be leaning on these days is Sam. She has become his port in the storm. But has she — will she — also become something more to him? “If it came up and there was a moment of weakness, I think he would take that opportunity [to be] with her, yes,” Thompson admits. “Patrick used to be a player, and he used to have his work. He doesn’t have his work as of right now, and part of that feeling he had all those years is that people wanted him. His wife doesn’t seem to want him whatsoever. I feel like the guy in him would want to feel wanted again.
“It’s interesting,” he adds, “that Patrick and Sam are two adults that can relate to each other if they just thought about it.”
The Fans Are All For It!
Patrick and Sam may or may not have thought about it, but viewers sure have! Social media reaction has been mostly favorable toward a Patrick/Sam romance, because of their foundation as friends and their devotion to their small children. “It’s nice to have this relationship that he has with Sam because they rely on each other without pushing it too far,” Thompson says. “They have a nice balance of friendship, and they care about each other a lot. They’ve known each other for eight years now, and they’ve never crossed that line while still relating closely to each other.
“They’ve never crossed the line yet,” he corrects himself. “But they very easily could.”
Things Can Only Get Better!
Regardless of what transpires between Patrick and his comely confidante, the doctor is at another, even bigger crossroads, one that leaves viewers – and the actor – wondering about the direction in which he’ll go. “I feel that he needs to redefine himself,” Thompson says. “Going over the material, that’s where I get caught sometimes, knowing in the back of my mind that that’s how I really do feel about him. There’s a certain amount of resolve in him that’s, Okay. What else can happen?’ In losing his job, there was a moment that he was like, ‘I don’t really care. There are bigger things to deal with right now.’ He’s starting to realize that there was a son he just about had, the relationship that he just about had [with Sabrina], the one that he did have [with Robin] that is slowly deteriorating.
“All of that has gone bad,” he sums up. “He has to do something if he wants to survive for his daughter.”
Letting Go Of The Past And Embracing The Future
A likely first step for Patrick is cleaning the slate. “There is a lot that needs to be wiped off the table so this guy can almost have a reboot,” Thompson says. “I can’t have one single scene with anybody on GH without something brewing. That is such a blessing, because you know you’ve done your duty as a character creating history. They want to write for you.”
And step two? “I want to continue to have an evolution with this guy as I move forward, because truly, the fans deserve the growth of characters that they love and watch,” Thompson says. “Personally, for me, I’ve got to keep it exciting for myself. As I grow and try to grab onto this character, every single time I go to play him, I want to evolve with it. That’s my job.”

Gold Star: Maura West (Ava)
gold star
GENERAL HOSPITAL has long been infamous for its rogues gallery of mobsters and thugs, from the Alcazars to the Zaccharas. But together with the soap’s writers, Maura West has created in Ava a femme fatale who may be just as tough as any of the tough guys and almost certainly more cunning than any of their bosses. Consider the well-earned hubris that the actress allowed her calculating counterpart to display in these scenes…
Caller ID
While Julian was off dealing with Alexis and the ashes that used to be her house, Ava took advantage of the opportunity to do some snooping. Sure, she was safe for the moment. But it wasn’t as if Sonny didn’t still see her rocking a toe tag once her baby was born. She needed some long-term protection, and she needed it yesterday. Luckily, even though Julian’s a brilliant kingpin, he doesn’t passwordprotect his laptop, meaning that his twisted sister easily logged in and was able to dial the last number to which he’d been connected. To her shock, this put her computer-face-to-computer-face with the scoundrel she believed to be Luke. In other words, she’d found the Holy Grail — the identity of Julian’s boss!
Risky Business
Casually pouring herself a cup of coffee, the minx leaned toward the computer screen and purred (as only she can), “Mr. Spencer, maybe you and I ought to be in business together.”
Unfortunately, in spite of the mutually beneficial arrangement that Ava suggested — one that would make her his point person in Port Charles — Luke was skeptical. And why wouldn’t he be? The reputation that preceded her paints her as, at best, unreliable.
In the time it takes to blink, the born survivor changed tactics, from flirtatious to frank, and laid it all on the line. “I need to protect my future,” she said. “You have a vacancy. I need a job. And a bonus: I have information on your — correction, our — worst enemy. All the more reason we should be in business together.”
Back On Top
When Julian returned shortly thereafter, he didn’t notice that Ava was grinning not so much like the cat that ate the canary but like a cat that knew it could eat canary whenever it wanted. She was about to inform him that, from now on, he answered to her, and she was loving it.
Obviously, we were loving it, too. West never fails to make Ava exactly the kinda trouble we’re into — hot as hell, cold as ice and surprisingly, tragically human underneath. If this soap MVP doesn’t get a Daytime Emmy nomination next year, we’ll invent our own damn awards just to make sure that her thrilling work is recognized. She’s that badass.
