So it's 2010 we have Steven Moffat now in charge and the youngest ever Doctor Matt Smith as the title character. The Series opener Eleventh Hour acts as introductory episode to the newly regenerated 11th Doctor, Amelia "Amy" Pond and her boyfriend Rory Williams. It's a really strong first episode that successfully introduces the new look and getting a glimpse of monsters old and doctors of the past in a scene added to the magic and even the new look TARDIS is something that sticks in your head. The next two episodes like with the RTD era follows the formula of past and future. First up the Beast Below is set in the future on board a floating United Kingdom on top of a starwhale, it's an interesting episode though arguably a step down from the brilliant opening, a personal highlight is the new doctor showing his dark side (something we saw in xmas invasion with DT's new doctor). Episode Three Victory of the Daleks is set in World War II and as the title suggests sees the return of the Daleks as they create new "multi-coloured" Daleks a lot has been said of them, my opinion is they could have been worse! (White, Red and Blue look fine) the episode at times felt rushed and possibly would have been better as a two-parter. The first two-parter Time of Angels and Flesh and Stone, sees the return of the Weeping Angels and River Song. The two parter is superb and in Matt's first filmed episodes he actually gives his best performances at this point. And the Angels are very menacing but they aren't the only worry... the cracks in the universe (shown in the first 3 episodes) is here, the crack if your touched by it will remove you from existence and you will never have been born and only time travellers can remember. Episode six takes us to 16th century Venice in Vampires of Venice. The episode has The Doctor uniting Amy and Rory together and Rory immediately wins the hearts of the audience (i can't imagine anyone disliking him!). It's a relatively good episode though not quite as strong as the two previous. The next episode Amy's choice is another great episode (do i say great and good too much?) the episode revolves around two dreams worlds, Rory's ideal life and the doctor's life in the TARDIS. The dreams are created by the Dream Lord (who's the doctor's darkside) who is an inspired villain for the episode and Amy's choice to rather be dead than live without Rory was very touching. The second two-parter of the series Hungry Earth and Cold Blood see's the return of the classic who monsters the Silurians. I've got to say this two-parter are my least favourite episodes of the series, the story was just so whatever, it's a big drop down from the high standards set so far in Series 5 however Rory been absorbed by the crack at the end of the episode was a real tear-jerker! (lump in the throat!) Next we're travelling back in time in Vincent and The Doctor, in another strong episode of series 5 written by Blackadder and other works Richard Curtis. Rory is gone, removed from existence which has a lingering effect over the episode but that in noway is a negative! Vincent and Amy's casual flirtation is amusing while the seriousness of Vincent's health is touched on excellently. And i've yet to talk about the blind Monster the Krayfis which had been causing trouble. The episode's end five minutes is words can't describe how emotional it was. The Doctor and Amy take Vincent to the museum where his art work is on show, to Vincent's surprise and then the museum curator who says how highly regarded Vincent is... But to Amy's devastation this doesn't inspire Vincent who still commits suicide. The episode the Lodger is a comic episode featuring The Doctor becoming a lodger for Craig Owens. We even get to see Matt's football skills, i'm sure he enjoyed filming this episode, whilst not as strong as the last episode it's comedy moments fit in well. The Series Finale two parter The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang round up a close of the arc's of the series but also leaving open a few and creating even more! The Pandorica Opens sees The Doctor and Amy summoned by River Song, she's been given a painting by Vincent (passed through Liz X and Churchill) it depicts the TARDIS exploding. They head to stonehenge as Dalek, Cyber-Men, Judoon, Draconian, Sontoran ships arrive. Though a warning speech by The Doctor caused them to leave temporarily. Their plan is soon revealed with the assistance from an Auton Roman Centurion Rory. The Alliance of enemies capture The Doctor and put him inside The Pandorica because they believe if they trap him the TARDIS won't explode which caused the cracks which destroy every life form. However the TARDIS still does explode with River inside and Amy is shot by Rory. The Big Bang has the universe ended but The Doctor hands Rory his screwdriver he's using a vortex manipulator to teleport. Rory frees the doctor in the pandorica where they put Amy until the 90's where her younger self will set her free. Rory stays guard of the pandorica for 2000 years. The rest of the episode has the Doctor, Rory, Amy and River trying to save the universe. It results in The Doctor throwing the Pandorica into the exploding TARDIS rebooting the universe. The Doctor gets trapped. However he tells Amelia about him it's another of them emotional moments. On Rory and Amy's wedding day she brings back The Doctor back into reality and the episode ends with Amy and Rory now married Running off with The Doctor. Episode Score: 1) Eleventh Hour: 9/10 2) The Beast Below 7/10 3) Victory of the Daleks: 5/10 4) Time of Angels: 8/10 5) Flesh and Stone: 9/10 6) Vampires of Venice: 7/10 7) Amy's Choice: 9/10 8) Hungry Earth: 4/10 9) Cold Blood: 3/10 10) Vincent and The Doctor: 8/10 11) The Lodger: 6/10 12) The Pandorica Opens: 9/10 13) The Big Bang 9/10 Season Average: 7.1 Doctor's Score: 9/10 Amy's Score: 7/10 Rory's Score: 7/10 Story Arc's The Cracks - So we get the premise of the Cracks immediately in the eleventh hour we're also told "The universe is cracked, The Pandorica will open, Silence will fall" though Silence won't be dealt with until Series 6 and beyond. The cracks are caused by the TARDIS exploding and makes a strong arc running through Series 5 though like the Time War allows Moffat a free reign at altering things from the previous regime without out right doing a complete re-write. With the cracks removing certain things from time (the cyberking and events in Journey's End) The Wedding and Amy Pond - It's established throughout the series that Amy is an important person and she's running away from her wedding, incidentally the day of her wedding is the day the TARDIS explodes. Amy's actually targeted by the alliance to form a trap for the doctor so that he can't blow up the TARDIS destroying the universe. And also Amy is able to remember the doctor bringing him back into the universe. So that's the end of Series five however while it answered some questions we're still left wondering. who really blow up the TARDIS we hear "Silence will fall" who is River Song (a major part of Series 6) who formed the alliance? and what next for Rory and Amy, the first married couple of the TARDIS |
